aren't annual stipends the only reason we have many of the allies we have?

thomps: aren't annual stipends the only reason we have many of the allies we have?

I think the new name for "annual stipends" is "Freedom Funds!!1!"

The reason they cut off our supply lines in the first place is because we killed 24 of their soldiers.

This. I came to TFA outraged and then while reading that thought, well, that is eminently reasonable.

To be fair, they shot back

1 million a day? Sounds like a great deal...

2012-05-16 09:47:01 AM
If we judge 'allies' by cost and what they allow us to gain from that 'alliance' vs how difficult they make other aspects of foreign policy, this is still a hell of a bargain compared to being allied to Israel.

Whaddya mean asinine? That's a hell of a good deal!

Oh...

Sounds cheap, look up what Poland wants to host a missile defense system.

As Lord Palmerston said, "Nations have no permanent friends or allies, they only have permanent interests." Unfortunately, Pakistan seems to be a permanent interest of ours.

this will totally not backfire.

They still harbored bin Laden---he was living a stone's throw away from their West Point, and Pakistan can't pretend like no one in their government was NOT at least complicit (if not active) in helping him. I don't feel a lot of sympathy for Pakistan at this point.

They want us to build them a fleet of submarines with screen doors?

Imagine if China or Russia was flying drones over Texas and killing Mexican drug dealing banditos - and American soldiers. How would we react?

"Ally"

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

2012-05-16 09:54:35 AM
A good deal, considering the $10 billion dollars a month we're spending on the war.

SURGE! = pay off our enemies. It worked in Iraq, it (sorta) works in Afghanistan.

2012-05-16 09:54:37 AM
Is very good quality! Best supply line! Very low price! You buy!

Well that Taliban funding has to come from somewhere since our drones keep interrupting their bake sales.

so the purpose of the military is about making profits for a few individuals at the expense (and lives) of the poor?

Bout time the right admits it

England charged us $4 billion a week in the 1940's, this is fairly cheap.

2012-05-16 09:57:13 AM
That's a bargain compared to the 12 BILLION we sent to Iraq that we can't even account for.

Pakistan is not our ally. They're part of the reason Afghanistan is the quagmire it is. Think about what they'll use this money for. The issue is that they have us by the balls, and nothing short of saying "fark it" and pulling out of Afghanistan completely overnight or actively going to war against Pakistan as well will address that.

Well that changes everything. We should get to move our supplies through their country for free now.

As well as free shawarmas.

Kinda `business as usual' with the friendly-fire US military, isn't it?
(Eight Canuck soldiers are no longer around to concur.)

2012-05-16 10:02:10 AM
The way the US stupidly goes through money, I don't blame anyone trying to get a piece of the action.

2012-05-16 10:02:25 AM
Oh, what fun the next 12 years is going to be.

Thanks for that, Obama! No sense in getting out when we can stagnate and prop up a corrupt regime that doesn't function to serve it's people at all! Because freedom! Eagles and shiat! Yeah!

2012-05-16 10:03:32 AM
That seems relatively cheap by "International Aid" standards. We give that much to countries that don't do jack for us.

2012-05-16 10:03:35 AM
So has anybody figured out what it would cost annually to keep the supply lines open with military force yet? Y'know, tanks, air support, etc? Maybe it'd be cheaper to just withdraw all of the "aid" to our trusty "ally", and impose our will upon them.

$365 million a year?

Doesn't anybody know how to bargain these things down? I got the car I'm driving for $75.

In a major climb-down, Pakistan dropped its demand that Washington apologize for the deaths due to the November raids.

Okay, here's the deal. Knock off $200 million a year and we'll apologize to anybody for anything, okay?

Sounds like we don't need diplomats in the state department. We need used-car salesmen.

You'd think they'd have that covered already with such an abundant supply sitting right there in the House of Reps.

2012-05-16 10:06:00 AM
No problem, Afghans. We'll just take it out of the nearly $3 BILLION we're already sending them each year. Asshats. I don't care if we shot their soldiers. We paid for them; they should quit their biatching.

2012-05-16 10:10:10 AM
$365 Million / 24 Soldiers = $15 Million

Would you allow yourself to be killed if your surviving family got $15 million?

2012-05-16 10:11:39 AM
For $365 million US. Annually

I was told there would be spending cuts.

Destroy their nukes, flatten all of the government buildings, and send their military back to the stone age.

OBL is dead, it's about time we give that region one final FU before leaving.

As others as pointed out, we've paid more to better allies.

Can we pay them out of the billions we are paying isreal so they can feel big and impotent?

At the end of this, we total every last thin dime we paid Pakistan in extortion. We take that sum and multiply it by 10.

Then we donate that, annually, to India. To do with as they please.

2/10 way too obvious.

Also ignored. Damn it feels good to be a gangster.

If you live in N.Y.C. those tolls don't seem so bad.
