I angered a lot of people when, on the local paper's Facebook page, I said people who have truck nuts are ignorant rednecks.

Hey, if they don't want to be stereotyped than they need to change. It's just like the muslims. If the muslims don't want to be thought of as terrorists then they need to stop being terrorists.

TFA just says they took "Native American relics" from TVA reservoir property. WTF was it, did they find some arrowheads? There's not much else on the surface of interest for lay people to take, I mean Native Americans didn't leave gold coins or kickass swords around as relics.

I suppose you might find some pottery shards, but that's just not something most people would put on the mantle and go "see that- yeah? yeah??! That's genuine Native American shards, baby!"

I lived in the north for 24 years, and Alabama for the last 8.

Actually, Indiana is more like the "South" you've been picturing. I swear, I saw more rebel flags on shirts and front porches up there than I ever have in my 30+ years in Alabama.

(And people in Oklahoma actually sound like what the rest of the country thinks Alabamians sound like.)

As a Hoosier, I can confirm that this is true - especially for the Southern half. Starting from Indianapolis and continuing north the rebel flag to porch ratio drops dramatically.

That (and several quality of life indexes) is why they say Indiana is the Mississippi of the North.

Interesting ARPA fact... Arrowheads are exempt. You can get in trouble for picking them up under other rules, but not ARPA. Jimmy Carter, who signed it into law, was a point collector and specifically excluded them.

And... Alabama actually has a lot of cool chiefdom stuff going on. It did seem to go downhill from there.

All jokes aside, if these guys got busted for picking up an arrowhead, that's just plane stupid.

If they were digging artifacts, I guess that's another issue.

Well, WTF did they find that was worth going to jail over? Or more to the point, worth charging them over?

TFA doesn't specify what they dug up, but cultural artifacts can represent anything from spiritual objects to human remains and burial artifacts to just crap left over abandoned centuries ago like buried trash heaps or broken tools.

FTFY. The license plate is a Georgia license plate. But since they are basically the same state cut in half, the general point is still valid.
