That's not bad. There was a lot of chinese influence in the culture of Blade Runner. Not so much with Robocop.

There was that Japanese company that bought out OCP in Robocop 3, which is close, kind of.

Or at least it would be if Robocop 3 actually existed.

So hipsters are flocking to decaying cities, attracted by their Bladerunner aesthetics?

"I've seen things you people have probably never heard of. Drank lattes on ice off the foam of steamed goat milk. I watched iPads glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Cafe. All these moments will be obscure in time, like PBR in the rain. Time to be underground."

I actually know one of these people. Every time I talk to him he tries to convince me I should leave California and move to Detroit like him, because the housing is so cheap you just need a part time job to own a house and you've got all the spare time for hobbies/art/whatever.

that's actually not a bad way to go, so long as you go into that lifestyle with your eyes open about the risks. granted, its not for everyone...you COULD end up stuck with a shiathole of a house and nowhere to go if things go belly up. But if you're careful about how you go about it, don't mind putting up with the urban blight and decay and really want the extra free time and/or work needed to secure the property and repair/maintain it then it's not so bad.

Apparently you can hire someone to sit up on your roof with a shotgun to chase away burglars while you go out, for really cheap.

Probably because they'll use that time to rifle through your stuff and take anything remotely valuable. Then you'll see them on that god-awful "Hardcore Pawn" show on TruTV a few weeks later trying to hock your TV.

That's what the metroparks are for.

CSB time. My first weekend at CWRU I got drunk on the north side of campus and made a small miscalculation when attempting to walk back to south side. I ended up walking further north. Fortunately a nice middle aged gentleman driving by pulled up to me and said "You are walking the wrooong way." and gave me directions back to campus.

How would I know? I've never actually been to California because, hey why go 2500 miles to be in expensive Mexico when I could just 1500 miles and be in cheap Mexico?

Yeah, it's totally because of steampunk, cyberpunk, baconpunk and ponypunk and not because they can get a decent house for cheap. Totally because it's "cool", gramps.

Let's just say it, Hipsters are moving to scary Black cities.

It should work out well because black people think hipsters are cool. They respect them alot and won't rob and rape them because they are not like other white people.

This is actually a good sign for these cities. The hipster invasion is one of the early steps of reviving a neighborhood. The locals who adapt before property prices skyrocket when the "young professionals" follow the hipsters and artists will make a killing.

St. Louis attracted more young people than it lost in each of the past three years.

Until they have kids school age then realize they need to move to the suburbs.

Cleveland native here: I could retire to my hometown cheaper than to Sarasota, Phoenix or other enclaves of old farts.

And the Cleveland suburbs are some of the finest locations in the nation. Better biking city than Seattle too (fewer hills).

You can easily buy a nice house in a Detroit suburb for around $50k. Or, you can buy a craptastic one in a crappy area of the city for like $5k.

Yeah, you could probably work part time and live the same level of lifestyle that you do in California. If you're living in LA, odds are that it's going to be way nicer in just about every way, too.

Where there's money: Buying houses and renting them out. A $50k house can go for around $900 a month in rent; a slumlord buying up $10k houses in the city can rent them out for around $300 a month.

Oh, plus IT jobs and automotive engineering. We're still the Silicon Valley of the automotive world.

The problem, at least with Detroit, is that the schools are just absolutely horrible -- despite a $15k a year per pupil spending (about 50% more than the national average) -- and it's almost impossible to start a business in the city unless you're a very, very large company.

I just got back from Hamtramck, which is technically a separate city from Detroit but completely surrounded by it. The place is pretty much a safe, culturally interesting immigrant enclave. My two friends I was staying in, were staying in a very nice duplex there and paying 500 bucks between the two of them. Their landlords who live above them are planning on sending their two kids to Cranbrook (yes, Mitt Romney's Cranbrook) with the money they save on everything else.
