But you gave factual evidence that the current federal government, by payroll at least, has gotten smaller under a Democratic president and by all accounts is getting smaller still. Why not align yourself with that party? Just asking.

Ed Grubermann: stewmadness: Aarontology: I'll believe it when they tell the religious right to STFU & GTFO

How very tolerant of you. Put that on a bumper sticker and drive around. Be proud of your enlightened position.

Fark the religious right, right in their bigoted ear. They have proven they are not deserving of respect. So fark them and fark you.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to vote with Mr. Grubermann on this one. Actions have consequences; isn't what the proto-theocrats always "preach" to us? Respect has to be earned. Earned back, in this case, because back before the 1980s, Republicans were fuddy-duddies but at least worth listening to (at least the ones not contaminated by Tricky Dick or John Birch).

Wow, um... Holy shiat, Kitty, you are unusually intense today.

I am getting very very fed up with their unending line of shamelessly blatant and DELIBERATE lying crap.

They are closely and thoughtfully examining every possible approach they could take on any given issue, and they are deliberately and calculatedly choosing to engage in approaches that are simultaneously the most harmful, the most ignorant, the most traitorous to their oaths of office, the most Mammon-worshiping, and the most utterly divorced from actual observable reality.

And to increase the fury of the fire in the forges of Hell, they are claiming to be CHRISTIANS.

I don't care if it's calculated and cynical of the GOP to embrace gay rights. If manipulative self-interest brings us a better, more equal and tolerant world, fine by me.

I don't think turnout was as low in the early going as some folks have led you to believe.

The TeaTards and Religious Right have been firmly put back in their place by the east coast establishment. The TeaTards were never anything but a puppet, but the Religious Right has been destroying the party for decades.

I'm not a conservative... I'm a lefty, far more liberal than our current government. Though the dems do want a bigger (in the regulatory sense) government, I agree with many of the regulations they seek, and I like that they seem to do a decent job (as did Clinton) at making government be more efficient (do more with less)... Under Bush, we got a government that didn't really do any more than before, but somehow stacked on 1.7 million more government workers.

What more can be said? As long they hold sway and continue influencing elections, then the GOP has NOT embraced gays at all. They're just SAYING they do so they don't lose moderate voters.

Again, for the GOP it's what you say, not what you do.

I think the key here is to not focus on big/small government or simply the size of it, but looking at the efficiency of it all. When I talk to my conservative friends, we all agree that we aren't getting what we pay for in terms of government. Where we differ is that their solution is to "starve the beast" by cutting government revenues to keep it under control, but my mindset is that a small inefficient government isn't any better than a large inefficient government, we're still getting ripped off. When I was working at a hospital consulting firm, we would frequently talk to people who didn't know what their job was, they would just show up and do their best every day. Many of them would have 5 or even 10 people who they would list as their "direct management"... we would meet with "supervisors" who had the responsibility for keeping billing departments running, but could not hire, fire, discipline, or authorize training hours for the people who "reported" to them. We would also meet with people who had the authority, but were so far removed from the day to day operations that they simply didn't know departments were short-staffed or under trained (some were even surprised to learn they had the authority to do things because nobody had ever told them they were responsible for a department). This is, by and large, the same as what I hear from my friends who work in government, they'll have quotas and management objectives from the guys right above them (based on their incentives) but the managers above them don't necessarily have the same incentives, so they'll get multiple directions within the same day or even in the same hour. The reality is that many times in government, just like in hospitals, or even in most of the larger corporations I've experienced, the people on the bottom rungs are hard working people doing their best and getting shat on all day long by totally ineffective and inefficient management. What I'd like to see is someone working on making direct chains of command, clear guidelines, and streamlining governement... not with the hyper-simplistic goal of "make it smaller" but with the equally simplistic "do it right" mentality.

I don't see how any gay person can call themselves a Republican these days. Like guns? Love moving to the left on the Laffer Curve? Think that tax cuts and trickle-down economics are the path to salvation? Awesome. None of that outweighs identifying yourself as a member of a political party that considers you a second-class citizen and uses who you are to frighten people into voting a certain way.

You don't have to vote Democratic, but for god's sake, have some self-respect and find a third party that considers you a human.

Hate minorities, hate women, it gave him an outlet for hate hate hate. He just conveniently ignored the hate gay part because usually it isn't top of the list.

Sorry, but if you know a repub, chances are excellent you know a gay repub. Simple way to tell: ask if he's gay. If he laughs and says "Sure, whatever," he's not gay. If he gets extremely earnest and indignant and accuses you of gay-bashing, yeah, he is totally gay.

If I may speculate for but a moment here, I think the future can make itself visible to us. Just a few decades hence, here is the line we will know to be true.

"Of course it had always been the republican position that all are deserving of equal rights. I will grant that there were a few republicans who felt otherwise, but let us not forget all the democrat liberals who tried to divide the nation under the guise of righteousness. They played up the conservative opposition and slowed the process down for all. If not for this meddling, marriage would have long been available to all.
