Good. Embrace civil rights for all.

Get rid of social politics as wedge issues. This will pretty much end the Religious Right as a political force. Good.

Then we can begin to have discussions and perhaps begin to move the nation forward, again.

A quiet transformation is taking place in the Republican Party, which has begun to embrace openly gay candidates - and among gay Republicans, who now feel more comfortable speaking out in a party that may have accepted them but didn't always show it.

Protip: They didn't accept you. They need to look like they accept you, for the moment, so they'll say they always accepted you. Kind of like the abusive lover who says, "I always loved you but I could never show it. Soooo, you'll forget the beatings, right? Bygones and all that." They'll be back to the tea party derp and open hatred of you as soon as they can.

Yeah. Good luck with that, you naïve assholes. Kreist - how thick can you get?

Twenty years from now, the story will be that the GOP were the ones working towards gay rights while The Libs stood in there way, just like the Civil Rights amendment.

Should be entertaining watching the Usual Suspects turn it around that they've always been for this, despite reams of quotations of invective and bile...

Let's face it. The GOP has only been against gay marriage because it will take the thrill out of their homosexual affairs.

Now that it matters to their election, they were for it all along. There isn't any media from the recent past where they said otherwise.

Yeah right. One of the most religious groups on the planet, who fervently believe their holy book tells them to hate, abuse and kill homosexuals, are going to embrace homosexuality and accept it.

That will happen right after the entire Saudi family abdicates, Norway becomes a Muslim theocracy, and China becomes the most open democratic country in the world.

Hey, if the establishment GOP wants to run with the "we now like gays" thing, please don't get in the way of letting them. The infighting will be hilarious!

So, telling the theofascists to STFU and GTFO in the hope that our country, which is being run by Jesus to the detriment of all who doesn't follow HIM, is not enlightened. Gotcha.

I'd actually be okay with Jesus running our country. He was a pretty liberal guy. Republican Jesus, on the other hand, can suck my cock.

PHIL: "Never thought on God's green Earth I'd ever hear myself say this, Jimmy, but I'll be doggoned if I ain't a liberal now."

I can totally see Lindsey Graham being the Ron Jeremy of a GOP-themed gay porn.

Republicans will embrace "gayness" over "jesus-ness" when it is the more politically expedient thing to do. If they really dug on the JC, they would already be practicing tolerance and acceptance, right? Or, are both sides equally bad?

I'm torn between hating bigots and being happy that the more they realize they need gay votes the less they'll hold gays back.

Ultimately I suppose the latter is worth more than the former.

Another thought - aren't all those Republican-pushed/funded/propagated/sponsored state constitutional amendments about gay marriage going to be a bit of an embarrassment on this now? Do they think no one will notice or remember?

Seems to me they've spent the last 70 years painting themselves into this corner, and it's not going to be that easy to get out of it.

No. They've never accepted them and they don't now. Minority portions of the GOP are finally coming out of the closet, but the rest are doubling down on the bigotry and hate. Conservative driven anti-gay laws are increasing, not decreasing and so is the rhetoric.

Call me when the mainstream GOP establishment punishes, or even criticizes, other members of the GOP for attacking gay rights.

2012-05-15 08:04:35 PM
Maybe the wealthy white people who run the party have started to realize they themselves are a minority, and that putting civil rights to a vote could backfire in a big way?
