That was my first thought. Just wait until some veteran gets permanently injured just like that guy in Oakland. Then there will be some repercus . . .

Heron: odinsposse: p the boiler: This should be a wild weekend in Chicago - I think staying at home makes sense, but I really want a first hand view of what is going on - on the other hand I would prefer to not get blasted with a sound cannon.

/At least I get to work from home on Friday and Monday since my building will basically be on lockdown

I work downtown. They told us we can work from home that day but I think it's going to be too much fun. I plan on getting teargassed over my lunch break.

Well have fun, just try and avoid getting pinched by the cops, as they've taken a "beat-up and jail everyone" approach to political protests like these for awhile now. They've even been roughing up the press since at least the 2008 Republican convention.

And as a bonus they can now strip search you for no reason. Yay, America.

I tell you what, I'll take that bet, except we have to include suicide bombers on your end of the scale. And maybe non-Mexican head sawing off guys.

Yes, because if you don't think civilian casualties caused by NATO are a great thing, you're a fan of the Taliban, right?

What does the protest against NATO have to do with any of those things? And even if, against all common sense, I included those numbers, you'd still owe me an apology.

2012-05-15 09:59:31 PM
Why do they have to have these NATO summits in major cities? Why do they have to have them in populated places period? Why can't they just get some isolated island, call it NATO island, and hold all of their summits there. That way these shenanigans that happen whenever they hold one of these won't happen and won't ruin everybody who lives or works around the meeting place week.

Yeah, just ask them to lube you up while they jack your taxes.

lulz, if they broke a single window at the Daley Center, in property damage terms it would be equivalent to nuking Afghanistan four times, so I'm probably gonna be ahead of the game.

Waah! I'm for austerity. I'm against keeping the promises we made to the working class about their pensions in exchange for paying them less. We already spent all that money on other stuff. We call take-backsies!

The working class? So patronage employees working for the Government earning above market salaries, above market benefits, and above market pensions are now "the working class."

Uh huh, tell that to the people paying their property taxes, and compare a stupid civilian ditch digger to a City ditch digger, sport. Psst, no work, no paycheck, stupid civilian. I wonder why they line up around the block for a patronage job.

Truthers, Birthers, and Occupiers. Gunna be a fun weekend. Glad I'm going to my parents lake house in Michigan this weekend.

Don't forget about the GOP. I figured with all there uproar against UN Agenda 21, that they would be out protesting also.

That reminds me, in another thread a Farker said it would be funny to paint something like UN21 on the curb in front of some Tea Baggers houses and watch them go into a frenzy. I'm guessing if you are in the Chicago area and you know some Tea Baggers, with this being in town would be the perfect opportunity to do it.

History shows that there are two things which can happen when the IMF comes in. The first is that a dictator clamps down hard on dissent and dramatically reduces the standard of living and the country continues to run a pretty large debt. You see that across much of Africa - it's why there's such a big debt forgiveness movement for the third world, because the debts are unpayable no matter how much austerity gets implemented. The second is that the people toss out the IMF lackeys, the country defaults, and then it hopefully puts its house back in order, like in Argentina.

It's a coup and a third-world standard of living, or a default. If I were Greek I'd be pulling for the latter.

The one exception in Africa was Mozambique, but that's because the country is run by people who dumped everything into infrastructure. That's all they did and before anyone had time to look around they paid off their debt to the IMF. Of course I'm sure we can find a few people in this thread to tell us spending on infrastructure is dumb.

This weekend is also the Crosstown Classic, so it is going to be nuts in the city. The cops will be stuck in quite the quandary - is that a dirty hippy protestor? Or a dirty, scumbag White Sox fan? Who cares, sound cannon all of them! Should prove useful once the mob attacks resume this summer too. A good investment by the CPD.

Austerity measures don't work. And the Greek economy isn't particularly big and it's flawed anyways. The trick isn't to go "OMG iif Greece defaults we're doomed!" the thing is to go "Ok, if Greece does default, how can be ameliorate the consequences? And also, what if we just change the terms of their debt?".

where do you go from there though? If they throw out austerity and require its creditors to change the terms of their debt, what happens 10 years from now when it happens again? Do we just tell bondholders, "sorry, go fark yourselves again?" If we change the terms of their existing debt, how will their new debt be structured down the road? If they don't enact any measures that prove to creditors that they are a credit worthy risk, they won't be afford to borrow money in the future either. Perhaps keep them afloat til the economy gets better but they NEED to do dramatically better in maintaining their balance sheet or else it's gonna be a failed state no matter how much debt forgiveness they're given.

The debt is held by European governments, they can modify the debt however they agree to do it. They could decide they won't collect on the debt for 5 years.
