Damn, I didn't know 38 Studios were in such a bad shape.

I mean, I thought Reckoning was a decent game.

Wonder how much they paid the "names" for their input. McFarlane and Salvatore probably don't work cheap.

I called this about a year ago. I wish I had been wrong.

"Copernicus" is vaporware.

They didn't promote Reckoning well enough at all.

In the social media environment, you need to create and maintain a "buzz" about your projects.

I understand they wanted to keep "Copernicus" top secret, but at some point you need to make your audience want the freaking product. Without some screencaps, teasers, etc., people will simply lose interest as they have. No one is going to invest any more money into a project that the target demo has forgotten about.

They have been working on "Copernicus" for SIX YEARS and this is all we have seen of the game.

Considering I know people working on Copernicus, 38 Studios is fine.

This is just the political drum machine beating against Schilling, because he doesn't fall in lockstep with liberal policies. Maybe he should re-brand his games as "green technology".

I heard some of the developers were liberal plants, which is why the game was so sh*tty that no one bought it. True story.

I talked to a 38 Studios guy only about 2 months ago, and they didn't seem concerned at all, but rather very optimistic about a secret project coming out in a few months.

Has nothing to do with Reckoning. This has more to do with a loan they received from the state in order to move the studio there and to fund the develpoment of the MMO game they were working on prior to purchasing Big Huge Games and Reckoning. The loan wasn't popular, embarrassed a politicians when it came back to bit him in an election in 2010, so now the government is jerking the studio around to see if they're going to get paid back for their loan anytime soon.

Can't wait to see him run for office after this flushes. he's got the right-wing asshole playbook down pat. Complain about government spending and taxes then take a giant handout for himself, tout "creating jobs" and then not actually create the jobs you promise, put up as little of your own money as possible and use the govt. money to get it back out as fast as possible, play the race-to-the-bottom card to exploit tax breaks, etc. Good job!

As I stated before on the Joystiq thread, the parallels to Ion Storm are uncanny, and would be hilarious if the whole situation wasnt such a clusterfu(k. Curt was quoted in a interview" I wanted to have you char on a flying pig fighting enemies, my assistants would tell me "I will never tell you no, only how much it will cost"

The idiots in RI gave a unproven publisher 75 million bucks and he took it and figured if he dumped enough cash in the game it would be a success. The whole farking situation is a disaster. I wouldn't care that much if it wasn't TAXPAYER MONEY they gave him.

The gaming industry is volatile. Game companies lose lots of money to make lots of money. Large IPs require large initial investments that take years to recover. It seems like Rhode Island doesn't understand this concept. Successful gaming franchises can make hundreds of millions with a single product, but it takes years to develop the project. This is why we're seeing less creative IP, and more Call of Battlefield Doody 8 Extreme 8stream.

KoaR sold 1.1 million copies worldwide, at AAA pricing. Yeah, they're not balancing the budget for developing two AAA games off that revenue. But it's a revenue stream that's establishing an IP.

Well damn. That's not surprising I guess, I mean an MMO is a money sink and the odds of success aren't good. I wonder if Big Huge Games is going to get sold off, I bet EA would consider it.

I'm getting politics into your sports/geek tab.

But Curt has been vilified in the papers in New England, particularly in Boston. And those papers aren't exactly what I'd call a voice of conservative reason. Shaughnessy has all but openly prayed for Schilling to fail. Funny, everything was fine when his ankle was signing their paychecks.

The big issue is and something that many AAA game developers fail to notice is the MMO world is dying. There are HUNDREDS of MMO's, lots of decent ones that cost nothing and use the pay to boost mantra. WoW was the last big MMO hit, everyone expected SWOTOR to change the MMO universe but they have been shedding users like every other MMO before it (except wow). Most don't have the content/end game being worth the time/effort. Console multiplayer is largely taking over. The only way to save the MMO landscape is to get a reliable way to play them on consoles that is easy and intuitive to use. Otherwise 38 studios and every other developer will spent many millions only to fail.

i think the problem is that rhode island is a state government (and not one that has been exactly flush with currency.) Its not really RI's place as a state to finance a video game industry... and to blow more than half of their budget for economic development on a company that offered them only 450 jobs in return??

and the fact that schilling has been lieing about his part of the business just takes the cake. rhode island (predictably) shot itself in the foot once again.

Seriously? Most people think that the passive first person actually enforces the connection. Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Half-Life all worked on this principle.

Be that as it may, they tried very hard a few years ago to make it their priority. They made that decision (presumably) understanding the industry.

I think "decent" is high praise for KoAR. That aside, being decent was not enough entering into the RPG market at that time. KoAR was released in between Skyrim and ME3. I am surprised it sold the numbers it did but will be a footnote in a few months and less further down the road.

Even if they did understand it, getting into an industry like video games and blowing 75 millions bucks on 450 jobs is ridiculous. thinking that curt schilling, a non-business man, non-programming neophyte was going to be the one to head it all up is just the rhode island level crazy you expect when you deal with that state.

I thought it was a decent game too, from the demo I played. Too bad I was waiting for Skyrim to come out, so I wasn't interested in getting far enough in to it to purchase it.

But it did seem pretty decent, in a WoW-ish way.

Missed this the first time around, but worth noting. Last year Schilling told Reuters that he had invested "$30 million to $35 million" in 38 Studios. A disclosure filing obtained by WPRI shows that Schilling only advanced the company $4 million of his own money, and has already been paid back-with the funds from Rhode Island loan.

ha what a douche. not that 4M isn't a lot of cheese, but....."i've invested 30M in this company!" yet in fact it was 1/7th of that, aaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnd he got paid back out of taxpayer funds?

Problem was it was just good. And "just good" games with AAA budgets = bankruptcy. Especially when released in a crowded release window. Shillings studio won't be the first or last to make the same mistakes others have.

My issue is he's die hard, bootstrappy Republican. He's bad mouthed "Liberal Massachusetts" frequently and promoted GOP economic and social talking points. He's railed on welfare queens.

So whats he do? Asks MA for a huge taxpayer break and taxpayer backed low interest loan. Ma looked at his comapny and said no way, so he threw a fit and picked up shop moving to RI. Where he procured a $75 million dollar no interest loan backed by RI taxpayers. And now he needs another infusion of cash to keep his private, bootstrappy business going.

He's just another Republican that likes to talk about free markets, but when his idea suck and don't pan out he's all for sucking at the government teat. But it's ok, because $150 million dollar taxpayer loan that 38 studios is going to default on isn't the same as welfare queens.

1.1 million copies over both major platforms and PC after allocating a AAA budget is not "establishing an IP". It's one foot already in bankruptcy court.

They can't repay their modest $75 million dollar operating loan. Throwing more money at bad is usually making a bad investment worse.

Shillings got money, if he believes in his company he can self fund it. He's got star power and a deep pocket. Time for him to put his money where his mouth is and line up some real investors, instead of gambling with RI taxpayer money.

If you mean by vilified, "told no one wants to hear about your politics", sure. Boston and NE love our sports heros. We hate them running their mouth about politics on either side of the isle, because they're sports players. We got to deal with politics in every other stupid facet of life, and we don't want it polluting our sports.

So when Kurt or Timmy TO starts running his their mouth with BS GOP talking points, everyone collectively tells them to STFU. ESPECIALLY when they're still playing. Unless you decide to run for office, we don't want to hear a sports players opinion on gay marriage or taxes or whatever. We want to remember you and celebrate your on field accomplishments.

I know a guy at 38 Studios. But he is not the CEO, the COO, the President or any other upper management suit who would actually have a knowledgeable outlook of the company's finances. He's just a programmer. He says the company is in great shape, but somehow I don't think the guy on the second rung of the corporate ladder knows what he's talking about.

plus the vilification has taken place largely since he pulled his RI move hijinks. He'd been going on for years about the evils of big government, then he suddenly demands/begs for the government to give him cash and then takes a bunch of jobs out of MA to a neighboring state who does give him a pile of free money. Nobody likes a hypocrit, its not wonder he got ragged on for it.
