oukewldave: What kind of neighborhood do you live in when you hear gunshots at night, 3 small kids at your door I assume crying and such, and then just send them on their way?

If someone knocks on my door at 3 am and the knock isn't followed up by "police department" it doesn't get answered, I wouldn't even get out of bed. I don't even answer my phone after 10pm.

The other article I read on this was more enlightening on the family involved. The neighbor sounded pretty relieved that the kids and mom were gone from the neighborhood.

pute kisses like a man: rhondajeremy: AFKobel: mossberg: How about the asshat neighbor, who sent three kids with gunshot wounds back home to their mother?

Where did you get that the kids had gunshot wounds when they went next door?

I don't see that in TFA, or any other that I've read on this matter.

A neighbor heard shots at 4:50 a.m. and then responded to a knock at the door to find three of the children. The mother, Tanya Thomas, 33, called them back home, Brevard County Sheriff's Office Lt. Tod Goodyear told reporters

in the other article another farker linked to up above, the neighbor then called the police. pretty much right after the kids left her front door.

/ the neighbor did not shoo them away, the mother called them back. then the neighbor called the cops. which is smart, you don't pursue crazy. it just would have added one more body to the pile

It would be hard for me to send them back once I saw they were wounded but on the other hand, the neighbour wouldn't have any way of knowing that the mother was the one who shot them (at least, that's the impression I get) so you might just send them back to their mom.

//was just showing what part of the article everyone was referring to.

In a country that restricts mental health care to those who can pay for it and lets anyone have a gun?

In a state where you can shoot a kid walking past your house and not even get arrested?

Yeah, there's probably plenty that COULD have been done to prevent it but this is AMERICA!

Perhaps, but the opposite is equally true. You are just a happy turn of chance away from something wonderful. I'll take my chances. The world and life are far more interesting that way.

I'd argue that you are far more likely to experience the random act of kindness far more frequently than you are the random act of violence.

You are seriously saying the Zimmerman/Martin case is a case of shooting a kid 'walking past your house'? Believe me, there isn't a spec within me defending Zimmerman, but that does not even come close to describing that circumstance and, in fact, reduces Zimmerman's culpability. zimmerman was in his truck or whatever when he saw Martin, called the cops, was told by the cops NOT TO PERSUE Martin, but he continued to do so and then shot him in the street. I haven't seen anything to indicate this was 'in front of' or that Martin was walking 'past his house'. I'm just bristling at the idea that someone is sitting in their front yard, some kid walks by, you can shoot him, and claim 'stand your ground'. You are not doing our side any favors by putting things in these kind of hyperbolic terms.

Since I have caller ID, I let calls that I don't recognize go to voicemail too, but how do you know how is at the door if you don't ask who it is? I suspect you have some method of looking to see who it is. Would you not do the same thing even if it were at 3am? I have neighbors that I sincerely care about... what if something happened to them and I could help? If someone is knocking on my door at 3am, you are damned sure I'm getting out of bed to find out who it is.

Perhaps I misinterpreted the OP, but saying you won't even get out of bed if woken up at 3am by knocking on your door without an indication that it is the police is pretty weird. I may not answer the door (ie. open it), but I'm sure as shiat getting up and trying to find out who is there.

Also, anyone contacting me between 3-5 in the morning is going to get a blanked "GTFO" statement from me, regardless of situation. Probably even if my own place is on fire.

I'd like to do that, but too many deaths in the family and 9/11 have me figuring if somebody is contacting me that late/early, it might be important

It has nothing to do with that either. Why are you being so obtuse? IT's not like Zimmerman shot him while driving by in his truck either. He saw Martin, followed him, called the cops, the cops said 'stop following him', he kept following him, then the shooting occurred.

The bolded part is what is relevant. Being 'in front of his house' or 'in his truck' has nothing to do with it. So, yes, you are being a hyperbolic asshole. If you can't explain the proper reason why people are outraged, then you are a hindrance to the people who want to see justice in this case. You are the kind of person the conservatives point to and say 'see how stupid the libs are!'. Thanks for giving them more ammo.

umm... 'our side' referred to people who wanted to see justice done in that case. Where did you get race out of that? Yea, there is the side that thinks the 'stand your ground' statute means Zimmerman is not culpable. There is the other side that thinks that Zimmerman committed murder (or manslaughter at the minimum).

but you know what they say... dead kids tell no tales.

/methinks the neighbor isn't being honest, as to avoid criminal charges.
//mealsothinks the neighbors mental health will quickly deteriorate out of some kind of survivor's guilt.
