"You know, Paul, Reagan proved that deficits don't matter. We won the mid-term elections, this is our due." Vice President Dick Cheney, 2002

"This debt is America's Nightmare Mortgage. It is adjustable, no-money down, and assigned to our children. Politicians have been trying to hide the truth about this Nightmare Mortgage for years-just like liar-loans. This is not just bad economics; it is immoral." Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney, 2012

The handle of that campaign sign fit up my arse. I have the medical bills to prove it!

In Mitten's defense, I don't believe anyone has ever confused Cheney for being an example of, or in alignment with, most common forms of morality.

Interesting fact.

It was once thought that Native Americans did nothing to shape the land they lived in. However, the colonists constantly complained about Natives setting fires. Why do that, you ask? Well it promotes the edge habitats that deer and other game animals love, not to mention the Natives planted corn, squash, and beans. In effect, the Natives were shaping their environment to suit their lifestyles. The europeans did not believe this and stated this many times. The children of nature stereotype and the notion that Natives did not improve upon the land came up constantly. These ideas would be used by the colonists in their actions in taking land from Natives so they could "improve" it. While this is in no way the cause of the colonists initial behavior, it was a justification that was used over and over again.

Debt is like a prairie fire
A rare and gentle thing
I feel it when you're with me
It happens when you kiss me
That rare and gentle feeling that I feel inside
Your touch is soft and gentle
Your kiss is warm and tender
Whenever I am with you I think of prairie fires

Out here, the initial settlers found long ditches that looked symmetrical and planned. It turned out that a great civilization existed here in the desert- and they had learned to make huge canals to move the water to places where they could grow food. 100s of miles of canals were dug. With rock and wood tools. Utterly amazing that they did this. They were very much changing the landscape to help suit their needs. Those canals were (and are) reused for our purposes today (we use concrete instead of caliche).

The book '1491' touches on other civilizations in the Americas doing the same thing.

Mitt Romney said: This is not a Democratic or Republican problem," he will say, adding that both parties deserve blame for the burgeoning debt.

Reality disagrees with this statement. The majority of the debt was created under Republican rule...and yet they want us to believe that they are the ones who are serious about addressing the debt? While simultaneously doubling down on the same failed economic policy ideas that were responsible for that (trickle down economics, tax cuts for the rich, underinvestment in infrastructure and public services, overspending on the military, etc)? No one should trust any Republican who talks about how important addressing the debt is until Republicans completely scrap and revise their entire economic theory in favor of one that lines up with reality.

I don't believe that Democrats are doing enough to get us out of debt, either, but at least they aren't advocating policies that will actively make the problem worse while simultaneously telling us that they are the only ones who can be trusted on the issue. People should laugh in Mitt Romney's face every time he says the word "debt".

I think I know what Romney's plan for dealing with our debt is!

1. take out a series of loans.
2. invade another country.
3. use the loot from the victim country to pay off the loans.
4. move all the US debt into the invaded country.
5. force another country to annex the country we victimized.
6. delcare victory

lather/rinse/repeat as necessary.

FTFA RMoney:

"Subprime mortgages, they came close to bringing the economy to its knees. This debt is America's Nightmare Mortgage," he said, placing blame for the debt upon both parties. "

Yeah, when something is 99% the fault of the banking industry let's be balanced and blame both sides. Let's pretend that banks were forced by Democrats to give loans to the unqualified, and that people the banks declared as qualified really should have been smart enough to realize that they weren't.
