It's nice to know that Siri's priorities are Apple and not the user.

I'm not an Apple fanboy by any means, but the Iphone is a far superior product to any phone ive ever owned previously. I've had three android phones and the Iphone simply has been the best phone for my needs.

wow. the real news in this article is that Siri was able to provide an answer.

my only response from Siri is that she's not available right now. what did I do wrong? fark her sister and then kick her dog?

On the other hand, will the Lumia 900 be supported 6 months down the road? If there's something that pisses me off is that when I needed to upgrade my android phone, I had to jailbreak it because HTC basically stopped caring about the Evo Shift 4 months after it was released.

Meanwhile, my friend's iphone 3gs was able to upgrade it to iOS 5.1.1.

And while I normally think bad of apple products, I'm actually jealous that a phone that is about 18 months older than mine gets better support.

quite happy with my Lumia. Highly recommended.

Oh, yeah, and it's Apple's prerogative to do this. It's not exactly above board, but it is their call. Calling foul wont stop them. Not buying their products would.

Here's some more stuff Apple will be fixing soon:

(from my phone to Steve Jobs' cold, dead ears)

Q: Siri, is Apple stock a good investment?
Siri: I can't help you pick stocks.

Q: Should I buy another Apple product?
Siri: I'm not sure what to say?

Q: Siri, what brand of laptop should I buy?
Siri: I found 14 computer stores...12 are fairly close to you (provides list- which fails to list the APPLE store 5 miles away)

Q: is Apple a good investment?
Siri: Apple doesn't tell me everything, you know.

Good thing Apple isn't a huge conglomerate that owns restaurants, grocery stores, retail stores (besides the Apple store), etc. cause it can then just point people to only stores that they own or that they have dealings with.

That's kind of like searching Google for 'best search engine' and having it respond with nothing but Google.

Having 'Dogpile' popup first might be humorous, but to artificially alter the results is kind of a dick move.

Which, given that it is Apple, is unsurprising.

Ummmm, I'm thinking the Apple lawyers made a good decision not allowing Siri to involve itself in stock advice. Nothing to see here.

Would you elaborate on how it's "a far superior product"?

The simple fact that apple still doesn't make a 4G phone put it behind about half a dozen droids (in my eyes).

2012-05-15 03:06:56 PM
More people should have a problem with this. It's being hand-waved as "well what did you expect Apple to do" but since they're obviously fixing this result, there's no guarantee they're not fixing others.

The old saying goes, "History is written by the winners." Well, in the future, the saying will be "History is written by the corporations."

I thought this too, and was seriously considering switching to an iPhone from my HTC Hero, which was stills tuck at Android 1.5 and obnoxiously slow. Then I got a Galaxy Nexus. Best phone I've ever had. Seems much faster than my girlfriends iPhone 4S, was cheaper, and has a better interface (I think). Turns out when you get a phone built to google's specs, running the newest version of Android, and without all the bloat and crap on it you get a much better product.

Nah, the Samsung Galaxy SII is way better. (for me) My wife agrees with you though. And actually, the phone is the only Apple product that isn't a horrendously overpriced/underpowered piece of dog-poo. So I guess I'm alright with your phone choice. Because I know my opinion matters so much to you.

True, but I bet your friend's 3gs was about worthless after upgrading. I know that my wife's old 3g was hopelessly crippled by the 4.0 upgrade. Yes, Apple will keep upgrading you, but they don't take the old hardware into account when writing the new code.

I really don't understand how Apple never gets investigated for anti-competitive practices. Microsoft got sued in Europe because it didn't preinstall competing web browsers. iOS doesn't let you ever set competing web browsers as the default browser. Google got investigated because they thought Google was artificially pushing up their own services in search results. Apple manually changes siri search results they don't like.

Isn't this basically what the EU is suing Google over? As in Google's search program queries it's database and runs it's search algorithm and spits out a list of results based on some criteria, but then Google turns around and inserts it's own products on top of those results and pushes them out to the users.

So when Siri queries Alpha for info on what you want, but then see's it might be related to an Apple product and pushes out something Apple friendly it's bypassing how it's supposed to work.

I mean, I love my iPhone and all, but if I want reviews for non-Apple products I don't want my search results compromised because it might impact Apple's bottom line.

2012-05-15 04:49:50 PM

To be fair... the Lumia probably has fewer users/reviews by a huge factor. I'd like to know the algorithm that was used to decide the Lumia was the best. Because if you were going to buy a smartphone, which would you trust more? 5 stars from 10 reviewers, or 4.5 stars from 10,000?

/not a fanboy. I avoid Apple products in general
//Don't feel like paying extra so Apple can censor what I can do with my hardware

Siri takes data from Wolfram Alpha, including phone rankings. Wolfram Alpha is making the claim still. I suspect they understand statistical significance.
