Yeah. Yeah it was. Didn't see the Bruno movie but Borat is a comedy classic already.

As for him as an actor I think a lot of people underestimate him. He actually distracted from Johnny Depp for a whole 5 minutes in Sweeney Todd, he had a lovely little performance in Hugo and, admit it, he was funny in Talladega Nights.

I think you meant Bruno...that scene was classic and a highlight of the movie. Actually, though Bruno was a lesser gem than Borat, it had some moments that were PRICELESS and still manage to make me laugh out loud in ways that exceeded Borat.

Borat, Ali G, Bruno..they all work as short little clips on a TV show..they are short little clips. The problem with the movies is that that they're 90 minute movies with one punchline.

In my country [women, gays, jews, etc] are [opposite of your beliefs], how crazy is that?

Borat was a 90 minute SNL sketch that stopped being funny 6 minutes in...yeah, the joke was funny the first time around...sort of funny the second time around...but holy crap they are going to try the same repacked joke 20 more times?

He has doen he same for a gay dude, a whigger rapper, an eastern European (used to throw a lot of yiddish into his Borat character), etc.

I like Borat, but it does work better as a sketch than as a movie, though the movie had some really funny points (Throw the Jew Down the Well, them throwing money at the cockroaches to escape from the Jewish-owned B&B).

I enjoy Baron-Cohen, though. He crafts his characters really well, and his in-character interviews are excellent. I'm actually going to pay full price to see this, which I'm not willing to do for a lot of summer films at this point.

The reason Cohen is funny is because he doesn't relent on the joke. He doesn't spill ashes on Ryan Seacrest, then immediately say "I'm Sorry". It's been months and he still hasn't apologized. He keeps that awkwardness. Meanwhile you have dumbasses like Ahston Kutcher doing his "Punk'd" show, and he's giggling like a moron the whole time, and they let the actors in on the joke before it even escalates. The shiat Cohen pulled in Borat was awesome.

The thing is, he isn't the idiot. He's far more intelligent than who he is 'talking to' in character, and as such is able to push the right buttons to get the right reaction.

Ali G TV Show is probably still the best as he was such an unknown and able to elicit a 'rawer' reaction.

I don't get it. Over the last decade-plus, posters here have given me some pretty good recommendations...Mad Men, Dexter, Brit stuff such as Blackadder and Stephen Frye/Hugh Laurie stuff...even went back and watched Arrested Development after the show went off the air...all because of people here.

Bruno, to me, was unwatchable. I'll give you guys that one. But hating on Borat?!? I don't get the hate there. I can't think of a comedy from the last decade ("the aughts"???) or so that made me laugh more.

As others have pointed out, he's not even American, but how does his being Jewish make it racist? Would it still be racist if he were Arab?

I haven't seen it, but Kaddafy definitely seems to have been an inspiration (not necessarily the only one) for this movie. Is it racist to poke fun at Kaddafy? Should his dictator character have been more generic to avoid being called racist?

The headline indicates the movie is dedicated to Kim Jong Il. Is that racist towards Asians? It wouldn't surprise me if he incorporates some South American or sub-Saharan African dictators as well. Is that racist?

Is mocking Bush racist? Or would it only be racist if the actor doing so weren't white?

Is Dave Chappelle racist for his white-guy news anchor character? Maybe his black KKK character?

Get over it. Not everything is racist.

/I hope his next character is a Somali pirate

I would also like the naysayers to point out movies that they think are funny. I don't get the butthurt and need to call names (welcome to fark) because someone else likes something that you don't. I'm an elementary teacher and I teach that to the kids in first grade. Holy shiat! We're not all the same?

alowishus: I think whenever someone describes a movie as "not funny", they should be required to list a movie they do find funny as some sort of reference point.

Why? It's enough to say 'I didn't find it amusing or redeemable in any way' and leave it at that. I don't have to qualify my opinion by giving you ammo to sling back and say 'Oh ya, well clearly you have no taste' or otherwise evaluate it. This is not an algebra equation, it's a farking opinion.

Haven't seen Borat/Bruno, don't have any interest in it, was hoping Dictator would be amusing but a bit derailed from his typical humor which is...one joke. One single joke hammered on, endlessly, for over an hour, but reviews are saying it's pretty much that?

Also: I hate, despise, loath, and want to kill every single person in 'The Office' (US and UK), and its clones. I have never found any semblance of humor or shred of comedy in those shows.

Saw the film last Thursday night for a special premiere for free so Paramount can get the word out.

I have to say, this film is hilarious. The structure of the film is different from Borat and Bruno. It's not supposed to be a documentary, but a film with a plotline that does not surprise unsuspecting people. Also Sascha Baron Cohen once again makes fun of the Jews and they are a plethora of dictator/war torn country jokes throughout the film.

Saying a movie "is not funny" is not the same as "I didn't find it amusing or redeemable in any way." The latter is a statement of opinion, the former tries to impose opinion as fact.

If someone tells me "I didn't like This Is Spinal Tap" I really don't think twice about it. But to say "This Is Spinal Tap isn't funny" implies that I am wrong in thinking that it is funny.
