Good. Since no one has said that it is the only thing we need to talk about, you should be able to stop pretending like that's your argument.

What you're actually saying is that we're too busy to talk about it at all.

Politics in the future won't be about anything BUT wedge issues. People will vote based on a few key items and ignore or overlook everything else.
Things like the economy, national debt and national security will become minor playing points as they are too big and too complex for most Americans to understand clearly. But items like gay marriage, abortion, drug laws and things like that will become what people make their choices on.

So no gay marriage, ever, then? That sure would make the GOP happy.

I support gay marriage. I'm saying that I think there are bigger issues like the half dozen countries we're on the verge of going to war with that are more pressing and no one seems to talk about.

Once all these problems that are having a greater impact on me and the rest of the straight white males are solved, we can start worrying about your little civil rights issues

I agree with him in a way. A lot of people now think of gay marriage on its own as a dealbreaker issue, and while I think there's no question that gay marriage deserves support, I don't think it's as big an issue as its made out to be. In theory I could support an opponent of gay marriage over a proponent if the opponent was better on other issues. Realistically, opposing it is very indicative that you have your values in the wrong place.
It's really just that while legalization would be a civil rights victory, I don't think it would be significant for giving gays more freedom. I think it would be significant as a triumph over nonsensical ideals that have been ingrained in our culture, as an example that stupid ideas can be purged regardless of how long they've been around for.

I'm so glad that you think equal rights for all Americans isn't a real problem.

It sure lets me know that you are a real American.

It's adorable that you guys want to get married, and I'm just heartbroken that you can't, but I think it's more important that everyone spend every second of their time talking about what I believe to be important. It's important to our country that you talk to your co-workers about Iran despite that fact that none of you could possibly be an expert on the situation. It's a waste of time to talk about gay marriage. Just tell your nephew that he and his boyfriend will have to wait until the normals are living idyllic, carefree lives for their rights to matter.

Who said it's the only thing we need to talk about? You are demanding other things take higher priority until some unspecified future date when you can't find another excuse to put it off. That is functionally no different than banning gay marriage.

But at least if you said "I want to ban gay marriage" you'd be acting with at least a modicum of honesty.

The least sincere form of being against gay marriage. "Yeah, I'm not against it, but I demand we shelve it until some vague, future date for no reason. But I'm not literally saying I want it to be banned, so you can't say I'm against it!"

The GOP's platform of fear and intolerance isn't working anymore, nor should it. As soon as they purge their ranks of bible pounders and social "conservatives" I'll come back to their camp. Small government =/= legislating my beliefs or my sex life...and guess what, I care more about that than the fiscal solvency of the country.

We should be focusing on jobs and the economy.

Go fark yourself with a power-drill, Republican. Where the fark was "jobs jobs jobs" when you've been legislating away female contraception and demanding rape with ultrasound wands since the last election? All we've gotten from you is voting restrictions and Christian Sharia.

And now you're just going to dust off "jobs jobs jobs" a few months before the next election? On second thought, the power-drill is too nice.
