Jesus this is an old story, and Gizmodo only picked up on it NOW? Wasn't this even on Fark when it happened some 4 years ago?

Jesus Christ, Subby. It's right there in the goddamned headline: "Air Force Accidentally Fills Entire Hangar with Foam."

To make matters worse, there's this: "It was just a huge annoying accident at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida."

Get your farkin' head in the game, kid.

In fairness to submitter, Gizmodo had spelled it wrong too. They changed it not 5 minutes after I used their commenting tool to insult their grammar.

Gizmodo is now stealing re-posts from Reddit.

And paying Fark to run them.

Thats... really pathetic. Even for Gawker.

Yeah. I'm gonna go drag my friends to the local airport so they can experience the foam deluge system in person. What could possibly go wrong?

I remember it happening in an airliner hangar at some point. I used to work for a company that made equipment to service fire systems like that, so it was semi-relevant to my job.

It probably happens many times a year in various hangers all over the world. The foam systems are not uncommon, and neither is accidentally setting off the fire alarm.

I work in a facility with a jet hangar that has this same system. They warned us ahead of time of how fast the place would fill up if the fire suppression system was activated. NIce to know what this looks like.

Not the same one. The one a few years back was a system test, and there were no aircraft in the hangar.

No, I'm aware of the system test. Turns out that the one I was thinking of was 6 years ago, complete with a hanger full of planes.

Yeah...like I said in a later reply in this thread, the article had it spelled wrong. Until about 5 minutes after I used their comment thingee to snark on their author's inability to spell.

Strangely, my comment never got 'authorized' by their moderators. Shocking, I know.

So basically the high expansion foam fire suppression system worked as intended. A welder started a fire and the foam kicked on saving a bunch of airplanes.

The headline should read, "Dumbass welder sets off fire suppression system. No expensive-ass toys lost."

How safe is that foam for planes (especially when they're tail deep)? There's a lot of little parts that could get gunked up unless the stuff just magically evaporates.

It pretty much magically evaporates when you turn a hose to it.

The planes will need to be cleaned though

Better than a fire. And less likely to spread to other hangars, make aircraft explode and kill people. These planes can fly in the rain, so foam shouldn't damage them.
