Might be because a lot of the "articles" that get greens nowadays are freaking tweets, and screencaps of a comment section of another website.

It's a chicken vs egg debate really. I think the lowered standards of discourse came first, but both sides will probably agree that before either occurred the standards of journalism plummeted so lets blame them instead.

Well, they've always encouraged means to drive up page clicks. Especially with all the outside sponsors. After all, they have to give USA Today a return on their investment.
