I'm not saying that some of those folks are incompetent. But if you assess a CEO's performance exclusively by stock price, you're part of the problem.

FTFM.

What does a CEO actually "do"? I've worked closely with four CEOs and besides whatever they had to suck to get where they are, they don't seem to do dick.

They keep their "doing dick" to hours when you're not around, out of courtesy to the underlings. As well as not wanting to give out any of their better methods.

Yeah. Haven't really seen an example of that.

I'm a consultant. I've had to watch some pretty deep dickings. And report on it, which is fairly horrifying let me tell you.

Great CEOs build capital = jobs = improvement in quality of life for the community at large.

Horrible CEOs sacrifice real capital growth for short-term stock price, using tricks such as unnecessary downsizing, ill-advised outsourcing, and misleading the stockholders.

Most CEOs don't do dick; they came from money, and are kept in money, regardless of their actual skill set and achievements.

Now that's not fair. It takes a lot of time and multitasking to balance being a sociopath with finding unique ways to ruin companies while receiving huge severance packages..

Nothing about Chesapeake Energy? The guy was going to loan the company his maps for a few million at only 8% a year... There is also the GM guy complaining he is only making $7.1 million a year. Balmer is bad but in comparison with those clowns, he's a godsend.

CEO pay needs to be weighed within an organization, as in "Is he worth this many man hours on a sales floor, factory, or construction site? If not, then dump his sorry ass.

The higher up you go, the broader the details become. So sorta like this:

User: "WTF? This web page doesn't make any sense!"
Help desk guy: "The users don't like the new support web page, they can't find the downloads."
Programmer: "We made the web page with this suite we bought, we can only move the downloads to here or here"
Engineer: "We bought that suite because it was cheaper than any other option and it did what was required"
Manager: "We hired these engineers because they have a track record spending less for comparable performance"
Director: "We told the managers to start cutting costs or they get fired."
Executive Director: "We told the 10 Directors they get a bonus if they cut 1 million from each of their budgets"
Vice President: "We told the Executive Directors we spent 30 million dollars on IT last year, but we want to cut it to 20 million next year."
Executive Vice President: "We spent 200 million on operations across the board, everyone has to cut 30% this year"
President: "Spend less money this year."
CEO: "Why don't I have a jet?"

Which of these categories would Ballmer be in?

On the topic of CEO compensation, I seem to remember that the CEO(?) of Ikea once warned against paying executives too generously, because beyond a certain point (which most companies seem to have crossed long ago) you stop attracting talent that actually cares about the business, and instead you get executives who are just in it for the fat paychecks.

Ballmer that shiatbag. I've been biatching about him for years. If you couldn't tell that Microsoft was a rudderless ghost ship then you're denser than he is. I've never seen a more promising company fall so far so fast. MS went into a goddamn coma, poorly copying their competition while ruining their core products.

As much as I find forbes to be out of touch, at least the broken clock got this one right.

Their other problem is their core products have been loosing value in the market, yet Balmer believes in a world where that is not true. Office and server products can't carry the huge margins they once did. With office especially it is getting harder and harder to put a new coat of paint on on Office and call it new. Now there are companies in the Office market willing to give away what MS charges for. OS is not much better.

XBox is a ray of hope but how long until the market shifts and MS is left scratching their head.

I remember when the last child like hope for microsoft's future blinked out for me. I was watching this indian guy on youtube explain how the next windows live messenger was going to be so great because of their new pseudo-facebooky addons. It was the saddest venture in pre-release failure I'd ever witnessed.

The entire time he was explaining these horrible features I just kept thinking "Who allowed this to happen?". It wasn't anywhere near their worst mistake and it came very late to the disaster, but it really hammered home how lost the entire company had become.

The involuntary fart of a dead corpse.

Even though Ballmer is a shiatty CEO, it's worth noting that Microsoft is still in business and is profitable. By CEO standards, Ballmer isn't that bad.
