Salon owner James Oliver suggested dermatologists who use devices similar to tanning beds to treat certain conditions are trying to profit by over-diagnosing skin cancer and banning indoor tanning.

Go fark yourself, asshole.

Is that... Oompa Loompa Barbie?

Anyways, I don't see any reason to ban underaged people from using tanning beds. If we're lucky, they'll kill themselves quickly enough for us to avoid ever noticing their existence, we might even get rid of them before they can affect elections with their votes.

It's a simple thing, really: don't leave a better world for your children, leave better children for your world!

Banning tanning beds? So spray tan is still available, right?

A similar German law was passed in 2009. Went right up to the constitutional court - we've got some leathery moms, too.

As someone who lives in New Jersey and who's wife had melanoma I am not getting a kick out of these posts. Fark those orange douchebags. It's child abuse and DYFS should be taking their kids away for this nonsense. This ban is long over due in every state.

Budding cancer pharmacist here (starting my residency later this summer). There are two new drugs on the market to treat metastatic melanoma: ipilimumab and vemurafenib. The cost of each pushes $100K for a complete course of treatment, and each are associated with a high rate of frighteningly adverse events. Like autoimmune liver failure and colitis. What's worse is that they don't cure the disease; but they do extend life a few months for those who survive the side effects.

So given the horrible quality of life that melanoma sufferers undergo, I'm absolutely okay with this ban. In my eyes, tanning is the moral equivalent of smoking.

I see Mr. Oliver has lost touch with reality.

Well if they ban tanning in salons, kids are just going to get their UV on the streets.

2012-05-15 07:07:43 AM
Mr. Oliver clearly believes there is such a thing as "an acceptable amount of skin cancer".

I, for one, enjoy being white. No, no, not being of Germanic descent but having a light complexion. I know that my skin may be pale but I won't look leathery or as wrinkled in my old age and I'm a lot less likely to get skin cancer.

I'm not entirely sure when this happened but supposedly tanning was invented when Coco Chanel sat out on a boat for too long in the 1920s and being a easily-tanning French person, turned up at a fashion show very tanned and everyone in attendance thought it was the "latest look" and the idea of tanning was invented and has never since gone away.

But just like the 1960s and 70s axiom that Black is Beautiful, White is Beautiful too! We evolved that way so we could absorb more sunlight in cloudy Northern Europe and not die of a vitamin D deficiency, not so we could go all brown in the bright sun and look like burnt toast and get cancer.

White may be beautiful, but if you MUST get all tantastic or tanorexic, spray tans and self-tanning lotions won't burn your skin, cause cancer, or make you age prematurely.

Children should not be tanning. They should be wearing sunscreen whenever they are outside so they have healthy youthful looking skin for years to come. When people ask my age, they are shocked to learn that I am 33, not 23.

I don't think he's far off, if your family has a history of skin cancer then you shouldn't be going outside let alone be in a tanning bed.

The difference is some tanning shop owners need to take responsibility and stop this behavior on their own, I know a girl who would go twice a day and got pissed when she was told she couldn't do that any longer.

Not quite as bad as smoking because you don't inflict "2nd-hand tanning" on others, but definitely as stupid.

/pasty white and staying that way
//definitely look younger than my actual age
///thanks to Mom (for the good genes) and to sunscreen!

Why is it nobody wants to be white anymore?

My herritage is northern European, heavy on Scottland. I glow in the dark and do not really ever tan.
I have gotten 2nd degree burns thu a shirt in the shade.
I once got burned on a cruise boat, under a metal shade roof.

And my peer reviewed, consensual appraisal of the Sun is that it is hotter than 60 years ago on my skin.
Fark your graphs.

There is a problem with this law. It looks like spray tan is forbidden to anyone under the age of 14. For some insane reason ( I believe an overdose on Guinness ) the Irish Step Dancing judges require the participants to be tanned for advanced competitions.

As far as I can tell, the Irish go from snow-white to lobster-red with no tanning in between. Why they think spray tan is required is a mystery.

I don't see why we can't just quietly change the settings on the tanning beds to "Instant Cancer" level, and get all these farktards out of the gene pool ASAP.

Stop working against Darwin, law-makers. Let them weed themselves out early with cancer before they spawn.
