Did they work in the US like a citizen of the same income? Did they create GDP? Are they likely to consume Social Security benefits?

Then what the eff does it matter? Do you want to make them slaves? Are they any less equal than anyone else working in the US? Argue all you want over if they should be here, but at what point do we not treat them to the equal protection of our other laws? If outside of their green card they contribute the same as a citizen of the same income level, how are they not entitled to a measure of equality?

Because they're brown.

I clicked the link, ready to be outraged, and then a full-page pop-up ad featuring a giraffe who ate all the content on the page (or something) while looking at another giraffe in a bed shat itself all over my screen. Do what you want, illegal aliens. Examiner.com are the real criminals.

The I.R.S. web site suggests that illegal aliens can claim Mexican relatives as dependents for purpose of the tax code's personal exemption

The IRS gives advice specifically to illegal aliens? And, I gather from what can only be righteous furor, not at all exaggerated or misleading, these benefits are available ONLY to illegal aliens?

Not News: An illegal alien with $14K in income paid no taxes.
News: He received a refund of $10K from the IRS.
Fark: Nearly three quarters of tax returns filed by illegal aliens received such tax credits.
Taxpayer Cost: $Billions
UltraFark: Many illegal aliens use false social security numbers on W2s, resulting in employers withholding and paying to the IRS social security and FICA payments, in spite of the fact that the aliens will never, ever be able to collect medicare or social security, much less retire.
Taxpayer Income: $Tens or Hundreds of Billions

a) undocumented workers pay all sorts of taxes: FICA, sales, etc.
b) they will likely not use social security benefits
c) they contribute to the economy in a massive way
d) they do jobs real murkans™ won't do (see: alabama)

why not just make them legal? i have yet to hear an anti-amnesty point that doesn't involve some veiled or overt racism.

How dare someone make 14000 a year!

The illegal immigration debate has to focus on the employers, not the employees. Penalize employers, and you fix a lot of the problem. Legalizing drugs would also help.

A lot of these people live in third world quality living and working conditions, and they work in the US. $4 billion a year, please. Drop in the farking bucket. About .1% of our budget.

2012-05-14 03:12:31 PM
Legal immigrants get an ITIN. You have to have one to apply for the job.

Do these morons think the government is tracking down illegal immigrants to give them a tax id?

To the Examiner overall? Yes.

2012-05-14 03:21:34 PM
Before anyone gets too chuffed about this; bestir yourself to google Individual Taxpayer Indentification Number

It's a number the IRS will issue to people who do not have, and cannot get a SS#, so they can file thier taxes anyway and according to the IRS:

ITINs are issued regardless of immigration status because both resident and nonresident aliens may have a U.S. filing or reporting requirement under the Internal Revenue Code.

The situation subby describes in the headline is basically someone who is eligible for the EITC, which is credited for doing wonders to help people get out of pvoerty and stay there.

2012-05-14 03:23:56 PM
Here is what this shiat is about, because this came up like 3 months ago.

LEGAL immigrants with valid ITIN numbers are applying for the child tax credit and are receiving refunds from the government. In some cases their dependent children aren't citizens since their parents are on temporary work visas. Because the law isn't clear the IRS has been allowing LEGAL immigrants with valid ITIN's and has asked congress to clarify the law, which congress has not done.

Republicans are knowingly mixing up ILLEGAL with LEGAL immigrants to turn this minor confusion over clarity into an attack on the IRS and the Administration.

The only way an ILLEGAL immigrant will have an ITIN is if they overstay their visa.

wait - i thought this article was about how expensive it is for them to be illegal!

2012-05-14 03:26:01 PM
I shouldn't say immigrants, since this also works for people who are only temporarily working in the US but still paying their taxes.

2wolves: To the Examiner overall? Yes.

And the story itself?

2012-05-14 03:29:18 PM
This does not sound perfectly legal as the article indicates. How in the hell do you claim 10-20 dependents that are back in Mexico if they do not have SS numbers? If you have dependents with SS numbers as many illegal immigrants do then fine. If not it is tax fraud. Prosecute them! It is not Obama and Harry Reids' fault.

I am sick and tired of the poorest of the poor ruining the American economy. Their poorness bothers me.

2012-05-14 03:31:10 PM
Well... listen, I'm not saying that illegal aliens are getting a great deal. I understand most of what has been said above. But I'm still not sure why it would be a bad idea to, say, cap the number of dependents in Mexico a single person can claim? Or possibly only allow tax credits for kids who have social security numbers?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the amount saved will balance the budget or anything silly like that. I'm just saying... well, fraud is fraud, whether the person committing it is rich or poor. Isn't it?

2012-05-14 03:31:51 PM
I am farking sick of the Republicans and their War on Illegal Immigration! It reeks of "I've got mine, fark you." It is obvious that they don't want lowly middle-class peons like myself to have our own slaves! I don't know what I would do if I could no longer pay a brown person a couple of dollars an hour to clean up after my scat parties with illegal immigrant children. Have you seen how much an American wants for such a job? It is absolutely outrageous! Also, they only let me borrow their children for my parties because I can get them deported if they won't play ball.

I would possibly consider voting Republican again if they would only change their stance on this one singleissue. Until then, my love of scat parties and illegal-immigrant slaves will leave me no choice but to continue voting Democrat.

FlashHarry: Theaetetus: Do you realize how expensive it would be if we made them legal?

No, no... This article is about how lower class people should vote Republican, because the only reason they're lower class is because of illegal immigrants sending their hard earned tax money overseas, and that's why taxes are so high. So we should lower taxes on rich job creators to spur on the economy without giving handouts to these ungrateful foreigners.

Never mind, comments withdrawn - I hadn't seen the thing about the ITIN and the deliberate conflation of legal with illegal immigrants.

Some of us prefer to treat the cause of illegal immigration and not the result. Others of us are focused on much bigger ticket items, like defense spending, corporate welfare, and I don't know, unbelievably low tax rates on those with the most money.

People in government are way too focused right now on the pennies and not enough on the 100 dollar bills. farking penny pinchers like you with their faux outrage just piss me off.

If it's a loophole, which is what the headline of your link calls it, by definition it isn't illegal. Why should I be more concerned about this than about the shenanigans involving corporations and Ireland? See for instance, Double Irish . I don't really like Wikipedia, so here's El Reg on the subject

Unfarkingbelieveable.

This is fun too.

As TIGTA acknowledges in this report, the IRS does not currently have the legal authority to verify and disallow the Child Tax Credit and the Additional Child Tax Credit during return processing simply because of the lack of documentation.

So get to it. Give the IRS more authority.

I dont think I have ever agreed with James! on anything, but he does have a point.

They'd have to somehow apply for a tax ID while hiding their illegal status. So you must assume they're just handing out tax IDs to anyone who asks for one, because that makes sense. Then they have to use that ID to get a job where the fill out all the appropriate paperwork including a farking W-9 so that they can receive a W-2 and file their taxes.

This according to an unnamed "Tax consultant" who just happens to have thousands of fraudulent tax returns lying around.

More likely they're using fraudulent or stolen ID's to file taxes with this whistleblower.

In other news, Farkers will believe literally any article that affirms their deeply-held beliefs, in this case that swarthy Mexicans are stealing all of our tax money and also our white, virginal daughters

Why would they even bother?

My link: Last year, our whistleblower noticed dozens of undocumented workers had used phony documents and false income to claim tax credits. He reported all of it to the IRS.

"These were fraudulent, 100% fraudulent tax returns, but I got no response; absolutely none. We never heard a thing," he said. "To me, it's clear the IRS is letting this happen."

Go for it. Seems like an easy fix. Flag anything over a certain threshold and process en masse. I assume if they are getting money back from the government the government can just deny their claim.

I don't know if this is something the executive branch can do on their own or not, but as long as catching the fraud reduces the abuse and at the same time saves taxpayers more money, go for it.

The IRS has asked for clarification. They're either unaware or not rising to the bait of the "ILLEGAL ARE TAKING OUR MONEY" argument and want the congress to clarify if they should be giving the Child Tax Credit to people holding ITIN's.

Wouldn't do a damn thing about people using fraudulent SS or ITIN numbers, but it's really two issues. American citizens can just as easily claim fake dependents.
