During the nadir of race relations, that terrible period between 1890 and about 1940 when white America went more racist in its thinking than at any other time..

Err...so, white men were more racist during that period, than they were when they felt it ok to OWN another human based on skin color? Really? Are you sure about that, Salon?

Gyrfalcon: More important than his sexual proclivities is the fact that Buchanan was the single worst President this country ever had. You can say what you like about Nixon's lies, Reagan's senility, Bush's alleged war crimes, or Clinton's sexcapades...none of them will ever equal Buchanan's regarding the impending split of the nation as "happily, a matter of little practical importance."

His complete indifference to politics and to holding the nation together led directly to the Civil War, and everything we've enjoyed since.

All he cared about was clothes.

No, but you know what would have clinched it? If he was known to use phrases like "...this does not him a gay man make."

Nobody who uses the word "libtard" without a shred of irony has any political credibility.

As a matter of fact, the whole making up words like "libtard". "Odumba" and "fartbongo" reek of the political acuity of a snot nosed 6 year old. On a good day.

The whole "See? Them "libtards" is scared! Worried! Looks bad for you Obamunists (see "made up words"), you should give up now!" was clapped out about an hour and a half after the mongoloids at FOX dragged it out of propaganda mothballs 3 years ago. Seriously. It's like watching the fatassed, wannabe schoolyard bully telling everybody "your ass is grass!" while they laugh at him.

Regardless of who manages to spend the requisite amount of millions to acquire this 400k a year job, this Nov., the people pulling the puppet strings will still have those stings firmly in hand. You an get all partisan hack rabid until your gums bleed, but until you step back from the dog and pony show, you're just another sucker helping billionaires to eat out of your fridge.

ck1938: I think a lot of the Log Cabin Republicans who insist Lincoln was gay are in denial because they don't want to be associated with the utter failure that was the Buchanan presidency. It's also why they probably don't like people saying Obama is gay. Being associated with two disasters of that magnitude is a heavy burden to carry.

It must bother you that history will look on Obama's presidency favorably.

James Buchanan wasn't gay, he was just a "confirmed bachelor" and lived with the same man for 15 YEARS.

Just like my uncle Jerry - he's so involved with his artwork, he doesn't have time to get married! Or at least that's what my parents told me when I was a kid.

It is a huge deal to me... one candidate wants a second class citizenship for me where I get to pay more taxes, have fewer rights, not get to visit the people I care about in the hospital, and lose my house if my partner dies... the other views me as an equal.

The only reason you don't think it is a big deal is because you already have all those nifty rights if you decide to use them.

We're all Americans. It doesn't matter a whit what Obama's sexual proclivities are.

Vote your conscience, but don't try to force your prejudices on the President.

there seems to be fairly substantial evidence about Buchanan, but IIRC, the Lincoln theories seemed to be rather reaching (i.e. "Mary Todd was homely, therefore loved Abe the cock.")

FirstNationalBastard: shiat, the press held up their end of a gentleman's agreement not to publish photos of FDR in his wheelchair, or using crutches and leg braces. That would never happen today.

No, today the editor of Time Magazine sells copies by putting a photo of a three-year-old sucking a teat and then the editor of Newsweek strikes back by faux outing the President of the United States. The press is much better at doing their jobs today.

While I agree with most of the article (Buchanan was gay, was probably not "hiding" it that hard, etc), this I'm not so sure about....

Moreover, the nation knew it

While I'd agree that the "elite" of the U.S. probably were aware of it... your common everyday worker I would think might not have. The president, while an important figure, was basically someone talked about in your daily newspaper... if you were one of those who knew how to read, which was not as automatic as it is today.

Maybe I am wrong and "word got passed around" to every little hamlet in the country. Are there real examples of actual newspaper articles from the time that were even "suggesting" that about Buchanan?

Honestly.... I'd love the Newsweek cover photo to put the anti-gay people on the spot about the fact that we've already had an "actual" gay president (not a "gay" president like Bill Clinton was the first "black" president).... and the country didn't erupt in flames from God's fury.

/well, I guess there was the Civil War right after he left office, although, weird that God decided to wait til he was out of office to stir that up. Maybe God hates really tall people more than gay people
