GungFu: /Did you Yanks watching the film not suddenly go: 'WTF did he just say. Did he just say that?'

I knew what it meant...and it was AWESOME.
I do wonder how it wound up being in the movie, because I have a hard time believing that Whedon wrote it into the original script. Betting Hiddleston ad-libbed it.

wjllope: Apos: did. My first thought was,"Did...did he just call her some sort of squid?"

I did not know what it meant - I'd never heard or read it before. The delivery made the gist clear, even if the exact translation wasn't known to most of us americans... So I looked it up when I got home, then chuckled. Do I understand correctly that the same line is used in the version of the movie shown in Britain? If so (must be, right?), the word can't be that offensive...

/"moistened bint" was already used once so that phrase was right out...

I hadn't heard or read anything indicating that a different word was in the UK version,so I'm assuming that no alteration was made. And as it's a rather antiquated perjorative,well... *shrugs*

It's not used much in the UK but it's still common enough for most people to know what it means. It's pretty offensive since it's practically on the level of 'coont'.

GungFu: I would have prefered Loki doing it: 'That is my bargain....."

Yeah, I was like... he must have said something else. He couldn't have just said that.

Oh, yes. Yes. We all stood up in the theater and exclaimed "What did he just say?"
Then one of us Americans yelled out, "Hold people. I'll look it up on the Internet!"
So they stopped the movie and we all waited until his phone had a good connection. Waiting with baited breath, we stood, quiet, waiting until finally he yelled out the answer.
We all breathed a sigh of relief and started the movie back up.

I almost choked on my popcorn when he said that. I don't think anyone else there caught it, though.

//Learned that word at 14 from a trashy "historical" porn novel I swiped from a friend's dad. Still got it laying around somewhere.

My reaction was more along the lines of "Wait, people still use that word? Wait, is this thing PG-13?"

If he had used the modern version of that word, the movie would have been immediately slapped with an NC-17, stupid ratings board.

Also, Loki did not use that word, so that picture annoys me
