All I know is that I would have rather heard him fart into a mic on stage at the Super Bowl than to have heard Madonna's abortion of a half-time show.

Good on Al. Bad on subby for posting a headline verbatim from the article.

I tried, within 9 minutes of him posting the corrected number -

It was busy. Someone else got lucky. :(

When to my first Weird Al show on May 5th. What a performer and an all around cool guy. Had a great time.

Would see again. Better than Cats!

I was there too, but not as close. Upper deck. Good show.

Guess you got splashed when he threw that pan of (I hope) water.

This would be even better if the number was some music critic's who had given him a bad review.

Hm, perhaps this would be a reason to get on Twitter.... this would have been fark awesome.

I was in DFW for several hours Friday night... The pay phone nearby rang several times. I was thinking of this, and refused to answer it.

/Al rocks.

Not all pay phones reject calls. Some google searching turns up that most phones in Canada do, but in the US it seems more random. Certain companies may block it for all of their phones, but otherwise they only block it in high crime areas. For a place like JFK it makes sense to allow call back so that someone without a cell phone can make a call, leave a return number and sit and hope for a return call.

This website (awful background not withstanding) has some info on it, and also a directory of pay phone numbers, with identification of whether or not they allow incoming calls

Not all. Generally in areas where drug deals happen. If you're arranging a drug deal using an airport's pay phone... ummm, you're gonna get caught. I'm assuming those are bugged legally, what with all the other crazy crap the TSA is up to.

Also, think about it. An airport pay phone accepting calls is probably pretty important. People visiting from out of the country... that may (if only temporarily before they get a pre-paid cel) be their only way to communicate with someone picking them up.

Relatives visited us here from Australia. There was a big-time security mix-up which wreaked havoc on everyone trying to meet up. I think the pay phone saved the day (although I wasn't there).

there's only one person I know of who doesn't like weird al, but he's a radio hack who I believe is jealous of Al's success.

So much this. Like many Farkers I grew up listening to him, and now as a 40 year old have only gained respect and love for his craft and his down-to-earth nature. Watching him perform live is an example of two hours feeling like only fifteen minutes.

They made up. Plus, the stacks of cash Coolio made from Amish Paradise probably didn't hurt.

Actually, Prince is probably a more logical answer.

I'm sure there are plenty of parody-song artists who are jealous of him. I mean, he's pretty much cornered an entire genre for decades.

Coolio didn't deserve a penny from Amish Paradise. Stevie Wonder wrote the music and Al wrote the lyrics.

The only payphones I've seen in years are miles away and somehow the person I'm calling never hears a word I'm saying.

You'd think a hospital would make sure the one in the ER waiting room worked right.

You'd also think a taxi cab dispatcher wouldn't just hang up before asking if you need a ride. Talking to Weird Al would certainly make the time between triage and getting painkillers easier. I mean if they aren't gonna give me a real chair to sit in for thirteen hours before anyone does anything.

/I'll accept a conversation with Adam Savage as a consolation prize.
//I bet he knows a couple of off the beaten path migraine cures.

FIFY. There aren't many actual phone company pay phones anymore, but those that are left generally still accept incoming calls.

My favorite WAY story:

About 20 years ago, my sister in law worked in a CD store (remember those?). One night, this guy walks in and heads over to the "Y" section and starts riffling through the CDs. Then he brought EVERY Weird Al CD in the place up to the counter. She looked at the face on the CD cover, looked at him, he nodded and said "yep, that's me!" and then paid for the CDs with a credit card.

No idea why he would have done something like that. It seemed very- for lack of a better word- weird.

Because dobro never seen a phone call received on a pay phone, they must not exist.

//if they didn't want pay phones to receive calls, why do they post a phone number on the front of it?

I attended a Weird Al concert at SUNY Delhi in the late 90s. I went with a girl, an elementary education major, and she sat there like a lump the whole time.

I, however, spazzed my ass off.

I could see him quick-changing at the side of the stage behind a curtain because I had extreme left seats.
