Yes, because avalanches have been known to remove the tongues of their victims...

2012-05-14 02:25:45 PM
My hypothesis based solely on TFA:

They were involved with the illegal transport/exchange of hazardous/radioactive material (something metallic). The rainsuits and lead masks were intended to work as an improvised hasmat suit. For the next part I see two possibilities. Possibility one, the pills the note mentioned were intended to prevent effects of exposure and they along with the suits failed to do so resulting in poisoning. Possibility 2: they were told the pills were to protect from exposure but they were actually poison to eliminate loose ends and avoid payment.

Now, I must be on my way home to 221b Baker Street.

No, but small scavengers go for soft tissue like that first.

1. They weren't suicidal, obvious from the fact that they told their families they would return and kept that coupon for the water bottle deposit.
2. Raincoats - assuming it was a sunny day, the raincoats were either being worn to hide certain items until they got to the communications site or to protect them from something that the aliens might produce (not rocket exhaust obviously unless they believed the rocket exhaust to be a chemical compound that wasn't hot, perhaps even water or a water soluble compound..
3. Towels - Used to clean up--your guess is as to what, but if it was a water-based compound then a towel would be a logical item.
4. Water - Water can be used for a variety of purposes, including diluting chemicals. Probably not enough water in two water bottles to worry about wearing a raincoat, but maybe they were just anal that way. The water more likely however was used to wash down whatever capsule(s) they took.
5. Capsules - Probably contained a chemical compound that they believed would allow them to communicate with the aliens better and protect the minerals and metals in their body (the human body contains calcium, potassium, iron, etc.).
6. Matching suits - They wanted to look their best and wanted to make it look like they were together.
7. Lead masks - Typically used to shield someone from radiation. Perhaps they were concerned that the aliens emitted a type of radiation.

It's a theory in progress. :-P

No, that's far too mundane... They believed they were going hitchhiking with aliens, so bringing a towel is the only hoopy thing to do!

A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitch hiker can have. Partly it has great practical value - you can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a mini raft down the slow heavy river Moth; wet it for use in hand-to- hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or to avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (a mindboggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you - daft as a bush, but very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: non-hitch hiker) discovers that a hitch hiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitch hiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitch hiker might accidentally have "lost". What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is is clearly a man to be reckoned with.

They stumbled across an abandoned Soviet RTG would be my guess. People stumbling across old RTGs, not knowing what they were, and carrying them around for warmth while irradiating themselves, while not common, has happened on multiple occaisons in Russia.
