Kibbler: In another 20 years, this will look exactly like "Mixed race couples may not attend the prom" looks today. Embarrassing, something you want to pretend never happened.

So, in other words, in 20 years, the same stiffnecked, fearful homophobes who do this crap today will look back and say, "If you think about it, you see that it was all liberals' fault. Liberals: The only real homophobes."

I wonder what history will say about a society that wove partisan hackery and dime store, pseudo-political propaganda into every thread of it's existence.

Liberals want to practice religious intolerance like it's the 17th century, and they're losing battles like this everywhere.

Your right to practice what you believe individually or as a group does NOT supercede the rights of others to do the same.

No one is saying that the Catholic school should be forced to do anything different.

We are saying that their stance is outdated, barbaric, and that we will start taking moral cues from the Catholic Church when priests stop f*cking altar boys.

I never understood that mentality. I don't care if it's a private organization or not. Sure the law can't make them allow homosexuals, but we should be able to condemn them for bigotry and hatred if we want. Just because it's legal for someone to do something it doesn't mean we as the public have to condone it or accept it.

Your 'I don't care if they are bigots that treat people badly' attitude makes you an apologist for bigotry. Congrats on that. I am guessing your family said stuff like 'Wolworths is a private company, why should they be forced to let blacks eat at the lunch counter'.

I sincerly believe the Catholic church periodically gets taken over by petty men who use it to advance personal power or a political agenda. Always before, when they eventually break out of the bad phase, the people come back. That's partly because for centuries religion was where people went for answers.

In today's world, people are looking to Science for answers. The Church has been steadily losing members. Oddly, rather than consider that as a warning to moderate their message, they are taking it as a sign they should harden their message. I believe this is due to demographics; as Churches in moderate areas get closed, the only ones left are in "strongholds". Since only the most fundamentalist are left, they assume that the other churches failed because they "lost their way" and weren't fundamental enough.

This rightward shift only serves to further alienate the church from the mainstream, and bolsters the ranks of the fastest growing religious denomination: ex-Catholics.

The bad new for the church is: this time, I don't think the members will come back. Long gone are the days when we viewed lightning as "the finger of God". We now know you can defeat it with a simple piece of grounded metal. (Check out Asimov's "The fateful Lightning"). Religion has a place to provide comfort to people seeking answers to questions Science can't answer (the afterlife) - but people are quickly running out of patience for religions that try to dictate day to day life - often in ways that directly contradict what we now know.

/Good for the girls about not letting the Church's decision bother them. Just two more people raised in Catholic tradition who will never be members.

People want to claim to be Christian (catholic, protestant, whatever) and belong to the 2 thousand year old club named after the son of the Thirsty Blood God® yet want to change the rules to suit themselves. Its a catholic school: their field, their ball, their umpires, their rules. STFU or GTFO, its that simple.

Unfortunately for these girls, they were enrolled in this school by their parents, so they are stuck for the time being.

Were the girls were discriminated against. Yes, yes they were and I feel very sorry for them, but they will be out soon enough and learn that the outside world is just as shiatty and discriminatory and prejudiced and intolerant as their school, so at least they'll be a bit more prepared than most of their peers.

If Jesus was the basis for everything, there would be no need to create a doctrine of Papal Infallibility because it would all be covered. The Catholics, like every other organized church I've ever come into contact with, are simply hijacking Jesus' message for worldly power and wealth. I've met some interesting people who actually follow the teachings of Christ, but none of them that I've met are devout members of any specific faith.

What can girls get away with that guys can't? If you keep your hands on the armrests during a private dance around here the strippers get mad, like they think you're not appreciating their efforts or something.

Come to Detroit, the strippers really like to keep you drinking so that they can let you get away with whatever you want while they get away with your money. Sometimes they don't even pretend they're not hookers, some will just sit down at your booth and name their price. I send them over to my friends. My friends like to haggle... it seems that meth heads aren't too good at negotiating when they really need money for another bump.
Also, I could use an upgrade in my friends.

It very much looks like the older girl (a senior) had roped in the younger girl (a sophomore) into an engineered attention-whoring situation. As a graduate of a private Catholic high-school (ahem, and current atheist), I can vouch for the likelihood of this scenario.

It was the older student who did not want the article published, not the younger.

Despite being Catholic, I think any sort of anti-gay discrimination is wrong.

However, I'd be reasonably OK with this if they were consistent.

But I'm guessing a lot of the male/female couples there have had or were going to have that night...some form of premarital sex (whether anal, oral, manual, or genital), and I imagine most of the people there have masturbated. All of this is against Church teachings. Yet, they're allowed entry. The gay couple is not.

What if it were a celibate gay couple? That should be allowed within the Church.

You're an idiot. My best friend in high school went to Catholic school for K-8 after the public school insisted she be placed in the mentally slow class and her mom said "aw hell no". American Indian friend in college did Catholic K-12 because the public schools in his area sucked and Catholic was the cheapest/best private alternative. Boston College, Georgetown, Notre Dame, etc. are Catholic. Jesuits had a strong teaching tradition that attracted even non-Catholics. Etc.

THAT aside, this

"I think that it is unfair that Hope and Tiffany were not allowed to attend prom together," Napier said. "I can understand why, but I don't agree with it."

"Universal love and acceptance," she said, is a greater Catholic tradition than its stance on same-sex relationships.>

was remarkably mature for a high school student.

I'm an idiot, but you are railing against the fact that private schools don't have to acquiesce to your beliefs instead of their own? I don't care why people chose religious schools for their children, the simple fact is that the reasoning behind their financial decision should have no bearing on the actions or policies of a private school. Don't like it? Move. Drive farther. Send them to boarding school. Run for school board. Don't infringe on the lunatic religious beliefs of a private organization (even if I personally dislike their policies and beliefs greatly). But hey, you want something to happen that has no basis in reality or law, so just keep calling other people idiots while wondering why your viewpoints are never accepted.

Bears repeating:

Important thing to remember about Gandhi when discussing him vs Catholics. He had a documented habit of sleeping with very young girls. Whether it was sexual or not is still up for debate.

DubyaHater: Why is this newsworthy? It's a Catholic high school. Of course they're going to deny lesbian couples equality. As much as I disagree with it, we can't force religious institutions to go against their beliefs. All we can do is ignore them, otherwise they'll just cry "oppression"

interestingly, I attended a catholic law school (specifically, it was jesuit), and they really tried their hardest to respect equal rights. first off, they wanted all of their on-campus employment recruiters to be equal opportunity employers, which by the school's definition included no discrimination for sexual preference. well, the military wants to recruit at the school, and the school at first denied the military, saying they were not equal opportunity employers (this was during don't ask/don't tell).

well, then the military threatened to deny the school any federal funding, so the school caved, but only on condition that the military made it clear that they were not equal opportunity employers. then the school sent a big letter apologizing to the whole student body, basically saying, we have to have the military here, but don't talk to them, they're jerks.

/ so, sometimes catholic institutions almost do the right thing. although, I've always had a lot of respect for jesuit institutions.

Considering Jesus was very big on treating everyone as equal, seems someone is rather missing the point.

Liberals want to practice religious intolerance like it's the 17th century, and they're losing battles like this everywhere.

Your right to practice what you believe individually or as a group does NOT supercede the rights of others to do the same.

So if I want to ban Catholics from my lesbian school, that's cool?

Is that a serious question? The answer is yes.

I clicked on the link and my first thought was 'aw, they're adorable' in the same mental tone I reserve for puppies.

I call shenanigans. Those girls are way too cute to be lesbians.

Lesbians are never hot in real life like they are on TV.

/It is known.

KeelingLovesCornholes: School had no problem taking their tuition for the last 4 years though. Funny how the almighty dollar can at times be more powerful than religious doctrine.

LOL ... the almighty dollar is the core of religious doctrine.

Is "Prom in the paring lot" code for " a bunch of young guys at a catholic school went outside to watch girls kiss"?

Of course, at my prom, I remember lots of girls arriving in pairs and that no couple was allowed PDA. Perhaps they were being antagonizingly affectionate? I'm not condoning, by any means, but when you purposely try to ruffle feathers, you can't complain when the hen tries to bite.

Farking Canuck: bunner: "OMG let's like go to prom and smooch and hold hands!" "Yeah, they're gonna sh*t themselves! This will be so cool!" "I know!"

Yes ... because all gay people are just faking it for attention.

Oh, they're not faking.

FTA: "Universal love and acceptance," she said, is a greater Catholic tradition than its stance on same-sex relationships."

Sorry, young woman, but no.

Love and acceptance is, historicly, not a strong suit w/ the Catholic clergy. In practice they teach and enforce just the oppposite.

Why would they think this would be allowed? The people they should be angry at is their parents for submitting them to religious authority under the guise of education. Religious morons are pretty damned predictable.

Given the topic of the thread, this entire thread may count as the "seat over here".

It was pretty awesome that their classmates threw them an impromptu prom in the parking lot like that, sounds like something out of a movie.
