Shallow gene pool in that area, it seems.

Good attitude from the girls. Glad they had a good prom, even if it had to be in the parking lot...

Wow, I'd always thought that Catholic schools and the bible belt were such liberal places.

Given the topic of the thread, this entire thread may count as the "seat over here".

It was pretty awesome that their classmates threw them an impromptu prom in the parking lot like that, sounds like something out of a movie.

What does a lesbian bring to the second date?

A moving truck.

Catholic High School Girls In Trouble?

Why would they think this would be allowed? The people they should be angry at is their parents for submitting them to religious authority under the guise of education. Religious morons are pretty damned predictable.

FTA: "Universal love and acceptance," she said, is a greater Catholic tradition than its stance on same-sex relationships."

Sorry, young woman, but no.

Love and acceptance is, historicly, not a strong suit w/ the Catholic clergy. In practice they teach and enforce just the oppposite.

Religion = organized hate

Therefore, a private religious organization is free to dictate hate for any group they choose.

Of course, at my prom, I remember lots of girls arriving in pairs and that no couple was allowed PDA. Perhaps they were being antagonizingly affectionate? I'm not condoning, by any means, but when you purposely try to ruffle feathers, you can't complain when the hen tries to bite.

This times 1000

Liberals want to practice religious intolerance like it's the 17th century, and they're losing battles like this everywhere.

Your right to practice what you believe individually or as a group does NOT supercede the rights of others to do the same.

2012-05-14 09:07:50 AM
Why is this newsworthy? It's a Catholic high school. Of course they're going to deny lesbian couples equality. As much as I disagree with it, we can't force religious institutions to go against their beliefs. All we can do is ignore them, otherwise they'll just cry "oppression"

School had no problem taking their tuition for the last 4 years though. Funny how the almighty dollar can at times be more powerful than religious doctrine.

2012-05-14 09:09:19 AM
I support these young women for taking a stand against the haters! Well done!

But the article does not make clear whether they are a lesbian schoolgirl couple (as per subby) or if they are simply challenging the policy against same-sex couples.

What a faux lesbian schoolgirl couple might look like.

I need to know which is the case...for my er um uh research.

Is "Prom in the paring lot" code for " a bunch of young guys at a catholic school went outside to watch girls kiss"?

The thing is, a fair number of kids at Lexington Catholic High School aren't Catholic, and neither are their families.

It's one of the more respected private schools in Lexington (and definitely the largest), so families who want an education better than the Public schools turn to it.

Also, the religious aspect is normally pretty minimal. I've had a few friends that went there, and a couple of acquaintances who were on staff there (dunno if they still are, it's been years since I've talked to either one), the overall atmosphere there is not one of constant religion, as they tell me. If anything, this was more of a reminder to the students that the school is still actually Catholic

2012-05-14 09:10:29 AM
When the couple tried to enter the school's gymnasium, where the prom was held, they were turned away, so Wright said they held their own prom in the school's parking lot.

go on. . .

"Love the sinner, hate the sin" is an idiom that gets taken and used in alot of ways. The school probably thinks it already is being lenient because they haven't kicked the kids out of school.

Letting them go to the dance would be like celebrating the sin instead of just "understanding" it.

Uh, we're talking Catholics, not born-again Christians. Their religion is not solely based on the New Testament, and the development of their beliefs actually began long after Jesus was dead.

However whatever Jesus taught is supposed to be the bedrock for everything. As for born against, they care even less for what Jesus said than Catholics do.

What, apart from the name? If you pay to send your kids to a school with a church in the name you deserve what you get. I would imagine that in that area the people are primarily Christian, and many are paying for specifically this sort of discrimination.
