Better Gary Glitter be shown on a rerun than editing his appearance out and throwing it down the memory hole.

shiat happens, people turn out to be scumbags. But that doesn't mean we should edit OJ out of the Naked Gun movies.

FirstNationalBastard: But that doesn't mean we should edit OJ out of the Naked Gun movies.

There is a bit of schadenfreude watching OJ in those films.

With Gary Glitter on TOTP, there's only disgust and regret at ever having liked his music.

Funny how none of the commentariat ever call for Roman Polanski films to be banned.

Glitter was always not the sort of rocker loved by the commentariat. If it had been Bowie or Bolan, they'd have been treated like Polanski.

I do think Polanski is a bad guy and what he did was reprehensible, but I can't deny that "Chinatown" is a beautiful film.

Anyway, I heard THAT Gary Glitter song on the radio just yesterday and was pondering what he was up to these days. Last I read, every country EXCEPT his native U.K. had banned him from entry.

FTFA: Mike Jenner, 51, of Chichester, West Sussex, said: "They will have to pay him royalties - what are they playing at? It's an absolute disgrace, nobody wants to see that paedo on our screens. I rang the BBC to complain because I feel so strongly."

Dear Sir, I object strongly to the obvious lavatorial turn this show has already taken. Why do we never hear about the good things in Britain, like Mary Bignall's wonderful jump in 1964? Yours etc., Ken Voyeur.

***

Dear Sir, I object strongly to the obvious athletic turn this show has now taken. Why can't we hear more about the human body? There is nothing embarrassing or nasty about the human body except for the intestines and bits of the bottom.

***

Dear Sir, I object strongly to the letters on your programme. They are clearly not written by the general public and are merely included for a cheap laugh. Yours sincerely etc., William Knickers.

HairyOne: BBC did it right : you cant rewrite history .

That is nonsense. Historians rewrite history all the time. I remember when the Pilgrims were revered, for example, instead of being considered genocidal maniacs.

Dear moothemagiccow,

Notice how that story ran in a UK newspaper? What do you think the URL suffix .co.uk means?

Also, if you don't know who Gary Glitter is, I can only assume you're too young to know how Gary Glitter is. He was famous, although not hugely, in the US as well.

Love,

To paraphrase someone else who came up with this analogy, you can live a good life, producing artistic works of the first magnitude for years yet diddle a few kiddies and all you'll be known as, from then on, is a kiddie farker.

I've never been to a Vietnamese prison, let alone for 26 months, but I'm guessing he's paid his debt to society.

If you've been to a sports event in America within the past 20 years, then yes... you're probably familiar with Gary Glitter's work.

I mean, really, what American doesn't know this song?

It wasn't so bad, due to bureaucratic error he spent first 16 months in prison for juveniles

I recall the US outrage and stadiums everywhere vowing to never play that song of his that became a sports anthem. It was a nice few years without it, but it's back. I always wonder if he gets paid for that for usage.

I think stadiums use a version of the song that was remade by another artist, but I could be wrong.

You're right and not just an artist but a band. If you liked 80s/90s music it's a minor league supergroup.

That may cut some of Glitter's earnings from playing his recording of Rock and Roll Part 2 but he still earns money from the writing credit, doesn't he?

Isn't the writing credit the big earner, anyway? (That's why John and Paul earned so much more than George and Ringo.)

If it's the version I've heard at hockey games, that at least explains why they'd be playing a shiatty cover rather than the far superior original version.

I get why they wouldn't want to line this guy's pockets further, but come on, that cover sucks. Just let the song go.

If he wrote Rock n Roll Part II...he gets royalties every time its played.

Schools (esp colleges) usually pay a small flat fee each year to ASCAP and/or BMI so they can legally play music. Those 2 groups monitor everything....and bust people all the time playing music without paying royalties

The song, not the singer. Further proof that no one here has any idea who gary glitter is.

It doesn't matter. The only person who receives royalties is the writer. Getting the rights to play the original recording can be harder (i.e. more expensive), but the writer is always the one who gets paid performance royalties.
