That guy makes $22/hr. Even if he could find a job in his chosen field, it is unlikely to pay as well as his current gig._

And to think, there are folks that WE give an opportunity to graduate high school and they can't even handle that.

Kudos to this man!

Hai Guyz! Is this the thread where a bunch of born-on-third-base-think-they-hit-a-triple whiteboys come to ridicule somebody who actually had to work for something?

He probably likes the subject and has tenure. Why not, if it's free. What I don't understand is paying for it..

Depends on the school whether it is free or heavily discounted. I have a couple of friends at Emory because of relatives.

$22 bucks an hour? Jesus, that is a high-paying janitorial job. Fresh nursing graduates make that much an hour.

Good for him. A Catholic Albanian would not have lasted long in the JNA fighting in Bosnia, so he did the right thing in fleeing to the US. He studied the classics because he wanted to. Because he was curious. Because he wanted to understand more about history and philosophy and mankind's place in the Universe. His was a noble pursuit. If you disagree, you are a retard and should feel ashamed.

9beers: College is free if you're an employee of the school?

It has been at the places I've worked. Some schools, if you are faculty your spouse is also free and your kids are free (up to a credit limit). Other places have trade programs where your kid can go to a different school for free that has an arrangement with yours. Our school just made a deal to hire someone and one of the arrangements was setting up a trade program with the school his kid was going to (it was a great negotiation on his part).

It is a great way to work and slowly build towards a degree (taking 1-2 courses a term and then some summer work)

9beers: College is free if you're an employee of the school?

yes! and depending on the school kids of employees get in for free too or severely discounted tuition/board.
I know a guy who is also a janitor/custondian and his 5 kids all went to Washington University School of Medicine for free.

Basically he got $1 million tax free working as a janitor for that school. For his sake I hope his kids pay for daily blows and hookers for the rest of his life after the sacrifices he made for them to have a better life by cleaning shiat, urine, puke and other bodily fluids typically found after frat parties.

Pretty much. The thread is replete with the typical disdain for non-STEM education. That he graduated with honors from an Ivy league school is more than most here can claim, but they'll proudly point to their engineering degree from a third-rate state college and crow about how superior they are.

Left his home country as a war refugee. Worked his ass off during the day. Got a college degree at night. Who cares what the degree is in. His personal history should interest any business who wants to hire someone who doesn't recognize the word, "can't".

And the man even said he wasn't interested in a degree to make money. He just wants to learn for the sake of learning. The very definition of "scholar".

"millionaire's sons"? No. But being born in the US or most of Western Europe = starting off on 2nd base leading off to stealing 3rd.

Other parts of the world? Standing at home plate, hoping not to get hit by the ball. At best. And other parts of the world, you're out in the parking lot, not even on the team.

Guy is (at the very least) bilingual, is a tax paying American citizen, and just earned a degree, all while working a job to support himself and his family.

Living the American Dream. I applaud you, good sir.

You don't have to be a millionaire's son to be born with twenty times the privilege you're worth. I didn't.
But I have enough sense to know I'm privileged, and appreciate it, and want to give something back.

Consider that there are native born Americans who live within a few blocks of Columbia U, whose families have been in the US for generations, and despite all the advantages offered them, they still can't read at an 8th grade level.

Okay, maybe my Boobies was a bit harsh. Tell you what Janitor Gac, you've got a nice story. If you promise to put your education and story to good use and ensure no one else can do what you did, we'll get you on a regular rotation on the conservative talk show circuit. If you're Janitor Gac story goes over well, we might even be able to get you your own show, or at the very least a Republican Congressional seat. Can you start off by giving us some folksy yugoslav sayings and relate them in a way to take shots at lazy liberals?
