I think Pussy Riot is terrific. It's still hard to be a loud dissident in Russia and these chicks are putting their pussies on the line by being so outspoken and brazen. More power to 'em!

You can check out what got them arrested here: Pussy Riot - Punk Prayer

Judging by Putin's unique combover, the scalp transplant (a la The Simpsons) is not viable yet.

Many say Putin, who returned to the presidency last week, has used the church as a potent tool in his command structure, allowing it to amass vast riches in return for unquestioning support of his policies and spiritual blessing for his leadership.

Combine that with his brutal oppression of Russian gays and the guy is practically a perfect Republican.

Not sure where Pootie stands on abortion though.

So... Pussy Riot back in the news.

Not so much a punk band as a new tactic in the anti-government protest game.

Anybody can be a member of Pussy Riot.

You just have to be able to buy the gear and be willing to drive around town in a van and then pop out and do an impromptu street performance and avoid getting nicked by the local secret police or regulars.

More punk than punk.

I wish them luck.

Oh, and fark you, Pootster. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberries.

For there to be separation, they must be separate entities. By the grace of God, the Tsar remains (and has always been) Emperor and Autocrat of all the Russias, equal of the Apostles.

Well the Bolsheviks effectively took care of the Tsar issue quite a while ago. So I don't think Russia really has to worry about that.

The Orthodox Church was happy to bend to the will of the Soviet government and do whatever they were asked (to keep the Communists from completely destroying the Church) so why should it be any different under Putin?

In every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own.

Yes, the Orthodox Church is the replacement of the Communist Party (which itself had replaced the Orthodox Church).

Look at where the money is going in Russia. It is going to oligarchs, yes. To the military. And to the church. Science is getting a few of the leftovers finally (not nearly as many as in Soviet times, though, representing a heavy net loss of influence). The homegrown arts (unless religious in nature) have been heavily neglected and even actively sabotaged.

The church over the past decade hasn't been afraid to use its influence to censor certain artistic performances. For example, an unfinished film-opera by Shostakovich ("The Tale of the Priest and His Workman Balda", based on the 19th-century poem by Pushkin) was heavily censored in many recent performances because the priest is originally portrayed as lazy and selfish. The church insisted that all the scenes with the priest be cut out.

First of all, I say... PUNK! And I'm a world-class expert in such things.... Second, they were still a girl band. Third, ok, but I want to impregnate Kim Shattuck. One time I cut in on some guy at a bar to talk to her and tell her that my band used to do Lucky Guy. She didn't sleep with me. Fourth point stands.
