Excuse me, our radiation detector detects that your banana truck is full of bananas.

What CAN'T you do with a bit of irradiation?

I would love to get a giant box full of old glow in the dark whatever from back in the day when they used radioactive material and then drive around and keep tripping the sensors.

If I remember correctly, it is illegal to use infrared cameras to see if houses are putting out too much heat (and thus hopefully to catch people growing marijuana indoors). So, would this also be considered illegal?

You remember incorrectly. If the police are in a place they can legally be as just a random member of the public they can use any detector they want. The results can then be used against you.

In the case of the grow operation they would then need to get a search warrant to come into your home. You have a lower expectation of privacy in yor car hence the reason the trooper could pull the guy over.

A lot of people don't realize what's really going on. They view life as a bunch of unconnected incidents and things. They don't realize that there's this, like, lattice of coincidence that lays on top of everything. Give you an example; show you what I mean: suppose you're thinking about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in looking for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconsciousness.

Not too bad a test except for the intravenous injection of the thallium. Hardest part is lying still without falling asleep or moving when they take the images.

That and a Geiger counter is a passive device. Also the fact there are legal and safe reasons why you're putting out that much heat. Radioactivity is a matter of public safety.

I know a life of radiation has led me to this sorry fate, and yet, I blame society. Society made me what I am.

When I got the test I could set off my Geiger counter from ten feet away. The next day, I was still a little hot, so I took the Geigercounter to the office and showed everybody how radioactive I was. The guy in the office who's a germophobe, constantly sanitizing his hands, recoiled in horror. I was a whole new level of conramination....

An IR detector is a passive device two.

"I had no idea the police even had devices like that,"

State Police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance confirmed that many of the state police cars have the radioactivity detectors. "It's part of our homeland security operations here," Vance said. "It's just another layer of public safety that we have in this state."

I appreciate that, I really do but and it's a big but - I'm getting somewhat tired of having emails and phone calls intercepted (yes, all of everybodys)"traffic cams", having my auto tags scanned in Automatic number plate recognition-Link (yeah it's here because if my town has it, yours does too) needing three forms of ID to buy something, and having my printer put a microscopic ID on each page just to name a few intrusions on my privacy
I'm not a Luddite and I don't advocate moving to Ruby Ridge but, there has to be an end point - An end to surveillance of everyone all the time. The only people that benefit are the Fascists and the terrorists.

Has Kyllo been reexamined in the context of modern technology? A cursory search found the 8th circuit decision, but most jurisdictions still appear to at least require probable cause for thermal imaging.

The way I see it, radiation is used to sanitize things like water and milk. Dude should have went in for testing until his eyes were Cerenkov blue.

Same sort of thing happened to me a few years ago. I had had I-131 thyroid ablation and left the hospital when the health physicist's instruments showed no radiation above background at six feet.

We went to Canada for a few days. When we came back I set off radiation detectors at the US Customs stop Suddenly the car was surrounded by a bunch of very excited Customs agents. When I explained they said "shiat, not again", scanned me, photocopied my passport and took my photo with holding a sign that said "Nuclear, Biological Chemical Munitions".

I work in an on campus lab with radioactive I-125. I had the misfortune of spilling the stock solution (about 200 microcuries) onto myself when the radioactive tape stuck to the hand that was supposed to grab a pipette. Missed class because I was too hot and was 6-7 times background radioactivity on my arm. Got it down to 1.5x BR with some edta soap, which was good because I had a flight that same week.

Actually, what's interesting here is that police now have radiation detectors that can sense a diagnostic dose driving by at highway speeds.

When it comes to nuclear terrorism, better a million inconvenient traffic stops than one hit.
