RIP DEAD DUCK

2012-05-13 08:35:58 AM
I hope that the musicians at his funeral remember to play his dirge in the key of A.

Good country key.

Damn. Rest in peace. Donald was a great guy and a great bass player. He'll be missed.

R.I.P., Duck.

Donald Duck done in one.

There's no doubt that band's now powerful enough to turn goat piss into gasoline.

I wonder if he wears pants in Heaven?

The Blues Brothers may have started off as a skit on SNL, but they had a great band. Duck Dunn was one of the best. R.I.P.

R.I.P. funky dude. I'm gonna go look for my pipe.

Kind of a bad month or so for Stax and the RCO All Stars.

Now this is crappy news to get up to.

Yeah, the 60s and 70s happened to a lot of people. Look at George Carlin over the years.

The "wotsa happenin' hot stuff" guy?

Damn, well that's a shiatty start to the day. Amazing pocket player - he was one of my first influences on bass and will be missed.

That's just because they got Booker T and the MGs. It wasn't some random group of session musicians, they got the guys who backed up Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett, among others.

2012-05-13 10:06:43 AM
shiat. This is depressing.

Belushi was BIG into the blues and knew exactly who to get for the band. I read somewhere that he would often approach the guys blind.

RIP "Duck" Dunn.

Saw him with Elton John live.
Ray cooper played the duck call for Honky Cat that night.

Kikky Dee opened up for them.

Guess I'll have to spend today listening to all 9 volumes of "The Complete Stax/Volt Singles" box set. See you in 12 hours...

The Blues Bros. band had Cropper and Dunn. No Booker T and for sure no Al Jackson.

Man, this is a drag. Sad news.

Memphis is the awesomest music city in the U.S. The Stax Museum is a must-do for any music fan even remotely interested in all that they put out. The Rock & Soul Museum was also much more enjoyable than I expected. Sun Studio, Beale Street, Graceland... I'll never understand why the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ended up in Cleveland instead of there.

RIP, Duck, and thanks for the music.

Did the Rock & Soul Museum a few years back. Now I wanna tour Gibson Guitars & Stax. Fun town to visit, but don't know if i'd want to live there.

While I also mourn Duck's passing - I just had to comment on this. I'm a geezer and remember everything on this Top 40 list. What a roller coaster ride music was back then. The whole list is mixed with really great timeless stuff and insipid crap that makes you drop a load when you hear it.

I mean - LOOK at that list!! You have incredible acts like The Doors, Marvin Gaye (in one of his signature hits), one of Rod Stewart's rock anthems, you even have "Lady Soul" herself on that list.

And then on the other hand you have The Partridge Family and not just one, but TWO hits by the Romneys Osmonds - including the #1 hit in the country.

What a strange world it was back then. I actually lived thru it.

I am indeed sad. he was the bass player's bass player. RIP pipe smokin' groove man.

/big thanks to SNL, John Belushi, Dan Akroyd for introducing many people to other wise obscure musicians....Cropper, Dunn, Caloway, etc...

I mean - ...

It is Top 40. It never pretended to be the 40 best songs out there that week, just the 40 most played songs. Every Top 40 list is like that, which is why you always hear Top 40 in the dentist's office. Nobody likes it all, but there is something there for everyone. I always used to call it the "Lowest Common Denominator List". The most commercially viable music from the most commercially viable performers. Don't get me wrong, there are some really good songs on that list. But Top 40 is not about being good...it never has been.
