Mugato: chewielouie: I'm guessing that fan edit is trying to reconcile Obi-Wan's "That boy was our last hope." line to Yoda, to which he replied, "No, there is another." Obi-wan did not know Luke had a sibling. Yet another thing Lucas forgot about it when filming the prequels. As ironic as it my sound, the man simply does not understand Star Wars.

No, he just didn't think that Leia had it in her or that it was too late to train her.

The daughter of Skywalker did not have Jedi potential?
Too late to train her? Like Luke had years of training under her belt already? While he was dusting crops boy, Leia was already in the fight.

Lor M. Ipsum: And how is not developing the land the high road? It's private property, not a state park. Even converting the land into a county/state park would cost millions in infrastructure and cutting of red tape. Hey, your house used to be an "amazing and beautiful place" before your neighborhood was developed. Maybe you should take the high road and abandon it.

Lucas has actually donated 800 acres of the Skywalker Ranch as a state park already. And if you look at a map of Lucas Valley, it appears a number of the smaller ranch-owners also gave their land to the state, as there are a number of smaller state parks.

Lucas owns several noncontiguous ranches in the valley totaling thousands of acres. He has got to be the biggest land-holder in the area, and the vast bulk of his holdings (over 90%) is undeveloped.

jso2897: As a general rule, it's a bad idea to step into the middle of a long-standing neighborhood feud like this and start declaring heroes and villains. There usually turn out to be precious few of the former, and many of the latter.

Which is mostly my point, Lucas is no saint and Im am sure the rich out there have quite a few dead hookers and runaway twinks buried somewhere in those hills but the term "affordable housing" means nothing since its still out of reach to 99% of the people out there.

Ha, Marin County always had issues with race and low income housing, so this is pretty hilarious.

buckler: Absolutely fantastic. He helps those of low income, while pissing off the elitist arrogant assholes who kneel to the HOA's. Now they'll only wish they'd been neighbors to a movie lot. Well done, Mr. Lucas.

Hell yes. This is a wonderful move--no matter what, Lucas ends up helping people.

/The guy probably shouldn't be left alone when scriptwriting, but this is the reason I actually like him.

BraveNewCheneyWorld: You seriously don't see how the two are different? In the scenario in this story, he's essentially giving the neighborhood cancer in the form of low income people.

FritzyvonFritz: badLogic: house in Sonoma County. He could build his movie studio there (a 40 min drive from Skywalker Ran

you sir, are a damned genius

also, my condolences for living in rohnert park...

hah. I have some friends in Rohnert Park, I actually live in the unincorporated area near by and way too close to where the casino will be.

Empty Matchbook: ...Did you just try to shame me and in the process describe low-income housing as giving a neighborhood cancer?? Well done.

First let me just say I have no idea how my post got so bugged out..

And no, I wasn't trying to shame you, I was only saying that the example you presented wasn't quite right. I'm not personally describing low income housing as a cancer, but I believe the intent of Lucas was to bring something to the neighborhood that would displease the current residents.

Does it bother anyone else that he stole this entire idea from an episode of Desperate Housewives?

Do something original for once in your life, Lucas.

Suddenly I'm not really giving a sh*t what he does to his movies. If he wants to go back and CG Jar Jar Binks into every scene in all his movies in 3D, that's alright with me.

Good on him.

Speaking of which, Star Wars fans should do themselves a favor and rent "Sword of Doom". Yojimbo and Hidden Fortress are great and their influences are often cited, but I almost never see Sword of Doom on the list of old samurai films that seemed to influence Star Wars.

patrickt333: It's amazing how much the term "rich people" is thrown around to describe the current enemy. Everyone conveniently forgets that Lucas is "rich people" too. Would he be the "rich" enemy if his construction project had been deemed to rape the environment, or threaten some near extinct snail? But, if you do something for the "less fortunate", I guess you get to lose the "rich people" enemy tag for a little while. When you can sit back and observe the sheer stupidity of people and how easily they're manipulated, it's small wonder why we have the people we have in office.

"Rich people" are not the issue. They never were.
"Rich people" is not a derogatory term. It never was.
"Rich assholes" are the problem. The difference between a regular asshole and a rich asshole is the effect their assholiness has on others. Rich assholes can threaten the environment, put thousands out of work, or crash the economy. Regular assholes are just loud and obnoxious, and post things like "It's amazing how much the term "rich people" is thrown around to describe the current enemy." on FARK.
Lucas is a "rich person", but in this case he's not an asshole. This is why you see people protesting Wall Street and not Hollywood. The rich people out there are less assholey, at least as evidenced by their actions.

Once again, a person isn't the "enemy" because they are rich, they are the enemy because they are an asshole.

/THAT is why you fail

We're okay with it because for once Lucas is being ass to people who haven't been giving him money their entire lives.

Don't even bother building anything, take some bricks, shiat, piss, urine and rats, and just dump it into a big pile.

Because that's what will happen to it after 10 years of minorities living in any space.

dittybopper: RobSeace:
If you buy into the notion of the replicator, you pretty much have to accept the idea of no money... In a society where you can create literally anything at will, how can you have money anymore? What use is it? (And, is such a future really that far off? Take a look at modern 3D printers... Primitive yes, but think what they'll be like 300 years down the road! Compare today's computers with those of only 30 years ago... How much progress has been made in that short a time?)

Unless the replicators can make stuff out of literally nothing, they are still going to need raw materials. You still have to have some source of power to run them. You are still going to need someone or something to come up with the original designs for the replicator to, well, replicate.

All of those things are going to require some sort of trade. Even if you completely recycle, you have to start with *SOMETHING*.

Replicators transform matter into energy and back again. This can be any matter, rocks, dirt, sweaty jockstraps, anything. Even the gases that make up air. All are free. Power is from an advanced form of fusion, which uses commonly found materials, like those found in stars (hydrogen/helium) or matter/antimatter. There's enough of that stuff in the future for it to be essentially free as well.

Plus, according to canon, there are some materials that replicators can't replicate. Those would tend to be valuable because there are limited supplies, and you can't just make them at will. They would end up being currency of some kind.

Only for those races who still deal in currency and are not members of the federation, like the Ferengi. Most of us will not need things like gold-pressed latinum, as they will be useless to us. Food, clothing, shelter, entertainment, transportation, those can be replicated. We can even have androids for sex (ask Tasha Yar) replicated after the first one is built. For the little which cannot be replicated, technology itself can be the trading medium, not money. I'm sure a planet with huge reserves of an un-replicateble mineral will trade it for better warp engines or faster computers.

One day there will be no money for the majority of us, a day when the pursuit of knowledge, the creation of art, the joy of reading, the exhilaration of sport, all can be enjoyed without the strictures of want or need or greed. I wish I could be around to see that day.

You muckin forons are arguing like this is actually going to happen. Do you really think that rich prick is going to let any icky poor people near his palace without a servants uniform on? You dumbasses need to get a grip on reality.

Fair enough. I suggest we celebrate this newfound understanding with the adding of chocolate to milk.

rewind2846: We can even have androids for sex (ask Tasha Yar) replicated after the first one is built.

Nah, they seem to have a lot of trouble replicating Data... (Probably in large part because he refuses to let them tear him apart to see how he ticks! I just rewatched "Measure of a Man" recently...)

Besides, that's clearly what the holodeck is for! (That's the real unbelievable thing about the TNG universe: that, with access to holodecks, everyone wouldn't just live inside one full-time in their own perfect fantasy worlds! "Join Starfleet as an ensign? No thanks, I'm making myself captain of the USS Badass, and flying off to visit the planet of the naked bisexual nymphomaniacs!")
