LMFAO. That's awesome.

George Lucas is the most epic master troll of our time. Well played. Well played.

Well done. Wow.

Downvoted because George Lucas licked the sweaty balls of Gene Roddenberry

Absolutely fantastic. He helps those of low income, while pissing off the elitist arrogant assholes who kneel to the HOA's. Now they'll only wish they'd been neighbors to a movie lot. Well done, Mr. Lucas.

fark Gene Roddenberry. He was a hack. Prying Star Trek out of his cold dead hands was the best thing to happen to the franchise.

Well, they said they wanted the land for residential use...

Turning that beautiful valley into housing of any sort is not cool.

It's nice of him to unleash the inner asshole in a positive way.

Lemme see if I got this straight:

1) George "NOOOOOOO" Lucas tries to get a massive studio built in a residential area.

2) Fails miserably.

3) Now decides to build LOW RENT HOUSING as a 'fark you' to the neighbors.

Is that what we're cheering over? Rich farkers screwing with other rich farkers and using 'contact' with POOR PEOPLE as a way of showing your displeasure?

Fark you all.

He's so farking lazy. He can barely be away from his chair and coffee while making movies, now he doesn't even want to leave home now.

I didn't think that I would be saying this any time soon but well done, George.

It's possible that his intentions may not be purely altruistic but if, as a consequence of this, people who actually need affordable housing the most benefit from this then I say troll your neighbours all you like.

Who cares why he did it, he's helping poorer income people get housing. Besides anything that screws with those arrogant HOA nazis is fine by me.

He couldn't do what he wanted with the land, so he's doing something charitable instead. That his neighbors will hate it is just a bonus.

Ummm this is one of those things we do when the town and locals won't let us get away with certain things....its a bluff.

When you have a large piece of property and the locals or township try to prevent you from adding structures, you claim that "thats a nice 300 acre open space, it would be a shame if they put in a couple hundred units of section 8 housing there if the owners can't build a 22k square foot barn on the back 40 out of sight from the road and anyone elses home........."

Ah, it's always fun to cheer on the dickish when they're being dicks to someone else for a change.

Seriously, though. This helps no one. He puts in low income housing, and then what? The community can't support them, and it's probably too expensive to commute (since buses or other public transit have to be added in). Maybe the people don't want a movie studio in the area because they don't want their small community becoming a larger one to support the industry. Maybe they've moved there to get away from that nonsense.

What has been gained here, other than George Lucas getting the last laugh on his peers, and using the poor like pawns in the process? I'd be much more impressed if he were doing this out of benevolence than out of sheer Superman-level dickery.

2012-05-13 12:13:31 PM
Using poor people as pawns in the rich man's game?

That would be how the world works, yes.

2012-05-13 12:14:57 PM
So instead of taking the high road and just leaving the land undeveloped like it should be (Lucas Valley is an amazing and beautiful place), he's going to make projects of spite.

/Yeah, not so thrilled that more of Marin County is going to get ruined by construction.

So they suck and they're stupid, and yet you chose to voluntarily associate with them by your choice of residence. What does that say about you? It sounds like you're pouting because you were willingly made a sucker. I don't know why you would brag about that on Fark.

Rich guy uses poor people as a weapon against the well-off people who didn't want Star Wars guy to congest their area? Yeah, totally a hero. I can get behind old star wars guy and can't wait to fund his kickstarter or buy the rap album that Tom Hank's kid is on.

just sayin... even if they live there, where would they work and how would they commute out to work?
it doesn't seem like an ideal location unless he turns it into a mini community...

I live in Portland Oregon. There is a guy who wanted to put food carts on a lot downtown but the city wouldn't let him, so he donated the lot to the homeless. Take that, millions of people who drive past every day.

That's usually the only way poor people catch a break.

Sometimes, if a pawn is lucky, it can make it to the other side of the board and become something more bad-ass.

Soo much butt-hurt over this. Put yourself in the shoes of the common folk here:

Lucas - "I'm going to be a dick to my neighbors and put up low income housing in absolutely gorgeous surrounding. I can give you one of the houses at a very reasonable rent, but you'll probably be considered a pawn in my evil little plan. Will that be OK?"

Anyone with a shred of common sense - "Cool by me, where's my house."

And one day Star Wars will be pried out of Lucas' hands and someone will finally make a Star Wars prequel trilogy.

How practical is it really to have low income housing in Marin Valley? I'm guessing you need a car to get anywhere, even buying food. Is public transportation going to be routed to the development?

Lucas probably does more than most people in Hollywood to help charities, but this strikes me as nothing more than a cynical tactic to screw his neighbors.

And frankly, just because they're rich doesn't mean that there is no merit to their argument of not wanting an office park in a residential area.

2012-05-13 02:15:48 PM
"Well, I was going to bring in some jobs and work to the area, and maybe some movie stars to do some more work, but since you all are douchebags, I might as well just bring in some working families to settle down instead."

Either way, the area is going to get working folks, and that is really what these asshats were worried by. People who actually did some labor for their bread and butter...

What will happen is that there will be folks who buy property to service this community, and that will continue the process. Their protests about what will happen to the neighborhood if folks actually work near them is the issue...

And to be fair, HOAs can suck it. They treat their property values as the only issue, instead of the community and neighborhood...

Newsflash: lots of poor people in this country own cars.

Building "low-income" affordable housing in an area like Marin County actually makes a lot of sense, as wealthy areas need service workers just like anywhere else. I know rich people want to be protected from "the poor", but the reality is they need them, and it makes more sense to have them close at hand, rather than forcing them to commute several hours (by car or public transit) to clean your house or make your Starbucks coffee.

/In the 19th century in the US, the wealthy and the lower and middle classes frequently lived cheek-by-jowl, with the wealthy on the major streets and the less affluent in smaller houses on the secondary streets and alleys

2012-05-13 02:29:02 PM
There are no greater asholes than those who try to stop any sort of development in their area.

I understand wanting to protect nature and beauty, but that is almost never their true reasons. it is all about being selfish and worrying about the value of your property. Good for Lucas, hit them where it hurts.

I really think there should be some law passed giving those who were in the area the longest more power to do what they want on their own land. Usually they moved to the middle of nowhere for a reason and the success of their business is why new homes are built in the area. Then when they want to expand their business the new homeowners do everything in their power to stop it, certain that any move will demolish their property value.

2012-05-13 02:32:36 PM
Bahahahahahaha.

I love it. They won't be able to stop the poor people from moving in and lowering their property values...and Lucas gets to write it off as a charitable contribution. Win-win.

What kind of neighborhood has lots and houses that size and a HOA? Looks like he lives on 100's of acres.

stuhayes2010: What kind of neighborhood has lots and houses that size and a HOA? Looks like he lives on 100's of acres.

It's not an HOA. It's an unincorporated community in Marin County, which is full of extremely wealthy people, who have the resources to fight anything they don't like.

I believe the original battle was over the change in zoning Lucas needed (from agricultural to commercial) this thing has been going on so long that I don't know what they've been fighting him over more recently.

As he points out, it was a stupid move, as the area is rapidly being developed as suburban subdivisions, while his plan would have left the bulk of his acreage as it is.

The neighbors' real fear -I suspect- is that the studio would become a tourist attraction.
