I so cannot wait for the articles in 5 years with 20-somethings unable to do their taxes because the IRS isn't coddling them enough.

/Oh wait, they'll never have to fill out anything beyond a 1040EZ anyways.

There was something like that at my undergrad. The local humane society would bring their cleanest dogs to a very noticeable spot in the sunken gardens at times of high stress in the semester, with donation jars and opportunities to pet the dogs.

He/she will get better, I promise. Be patient and firm. My puppy trainer said to make any desired behavior the GREATEST THING IN THE WORLD--lots of treats, good boys, etc.

Patience is the key, which I have little of.

We had puppies at finals time this year. It was a local shelter that came by, and a couple of the homeless puppies managed to get adopted.

I had an English Mastiff... It was like I had to have the forgiveness of Jesus Christ not to send her to a Chinese restaurant until she was a year old. But she was such a sweet dog, and when she finally slowed down and knew what she could do in our house, she was an epic guard dog. If I was a burglar, I would NOT mess around with that house. Maggie would kill and eat me, lol.

My lab is named Maggie too. :) I got her both as a companion dog and as a hunting buddy, but I can't get her to settle down long enough for any kind of training. She's picked up "sit" and "lay down" - as long as I have a treat for her, but other than that, I spend most of the time frustrated as hell. I've read a couple different books, and even have some instructional DVDs - I swear the puppies on those DVDs must be drugged or something. Everyone says it does get better, but they tell that to gay kids, too.

Yep, Labs will try ya at every turn when they are pups. Then they turn into the best friend you will ever have. My youngest is three now and he is the best friend I could ever have. When I took him over at 8 months old he was a nut. Just takes time and patience but the reward is oh so sweet. Worth the work for sure.

Our lab mix is just shy of a year and, at times, even she gives us fits during our little training sessions (we've had her less than three months, we've got several down pat, but "stay" and "shake" are other matters for her) but makes up for it by being zen during walks and a love when you go to pet her.

This is awesome. And, also why after my freshman year I moved into an off-campus apartment and got a cat. Pets are the best therapy.

My wife and one of my dogs actually participate in a similar program at Pitt. As this pup is a registered therapy dog, she gets to go to campus every week for a "puppy night" kind of deal.

I got a 4 month old Flatcoat retriever from the humain society 6 years ago. We only survived the first year because I found doggy day care. If you wear them out completely once or twice a week they are easier to train. (The teacher in my puppy obedience class said 'a tired dog is a well behaved dog' and encouraged doggy day care on days we had class.) Also, having her recognize sit and down at 18 weeks is amazing! It is like having a 4 year old child sometimes make the bed if you tell them and promise ice cream. Just remember that it is a baby, reward the accomplishments out of proportion and have patience with the mistakes. The only way it will not get better is if you give up.

Pup and repup walked into a steak house.

I remember my Freshman year someone smuggled a puppy into the study lounge. It was tiny, eyes barely open... significantly younger than the pups in Valkore's post up there. Everyone was happy, except the one girl who was afraid of dogs. Every time anyone tried to bring the pup near her she'd scream and run away. At first everyone thought she was hamming it up, but it became clear she was actually terrified of the pup, ...which made it even more fun to chase her around with it.

At MIT they used to let you have a go at the shooting range for $5 near the end of term, not sure if they still do that these days. I know they're doing the puppy thing at the library. There can be a lot of stress as the end of term approaches and they really don't need any more kids throwing themselves off the Green Building or hanging themselves in their dorm rooms.

If I am feeling down I just leave my door open and turn on my electric blanket.

*suddenly, kittens everywhere*

My neighbour is a cat lady but she kicks them all out of the house each night. The 2 kittens seem to have ESP as to when the electric blanket is on.
