It's a dirty shame what happened to "Life." That show was fan-farking-tastic, but its first season got cut short by the writer's strike, and the second was derailed by Sarah Shahi's pregnancy. What's worse, it didn't have to be, because they could have easily written it into the script. How great would it have been for her I-can't-believe-I'm-doing-this affair with Donal Logue's greaseball captain got her knocked up and she had to deal with that and with Crews? But instead they slapped together some weak subplot that yanked her out of the ongoing story arc so she could have only a couple scenes per episode of talking to Crews on the phone. Yeah, they tied it all together at the end, and got to actually put a nice bow on the series when they knew NBC was killing it. And while I'm happy to see Gabrielle Union in anything, the show lost its spark with the new partner. His give-and-take with his old beat-cop partner was better. The second half of the second season lost its sharpness and its joyous quirk, and only regained its footing in the last two episodes.

Having said all that, I would definitely put "Life" on this list.

fusillade762: wildcardjack: Scoobie Doo made the list while all these honorable mentions didn't?

I'd love to redo Scoobie Doo with a touch of film noir.

We have Fred as cynical lead, Daphne as the people person, Velma as tech wizard, and Shaggy takes Scoobie Doo out to sniff for clues.

If I had comic book artist skills I'd do one to distribute on the DL.

You don't even need to go to that parody.

The new show, Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated, would deliver most of what you're asking for.

It's surprisingly deep, this new show. Built around the idea that there was a previous detective team before the scooby doo set. A team back in the 60s/70s (suggesting the show we grew up with is that pre-history).

The kids all have parents, but parents who don't want them being detectives. Not because it's dangerous, but because the town's economy is built on its 'haunted' past, heh. So every monster/ghost that gets revealed is bad for the town's popularity.

The show is quite interesting. It builds out characters a lot more than they ever were before. Fred's not just a do-right now. He's actually driven by a compulsive need to trap things and his obsesssion constantly puts his friends in danger. Daphne's a smart super-rich girl (think Veronica Lodge) who actively dumbs herself down because she's hopelessly in love with Fred but massively insecure about it. Velma's a genius and she's dating Shaggy. Shag's and Scoob are pretty much the same, except Velma and Shaggy have to hide their relationship from the dog because he's extremely jealous. Also, no scooby snacks.

They had a funny scene in one of the early episodes (only one season has aired so far) where they have the van break down in a creepy town (just a couple miles from their home). You get the classic scene "Oh no, we're stuck in this creepy town with no way to get home!!!".... and then... they instantly pull out their cellphones and call their parents, LOL.

Anyway, if you love Scooby Doo and haven't checked out the new show, you should. It's quite clever and it pays due deference to the past while trying to modernize the show. (they even had a drugged up hallucination episode with the other teen shows, Captain Caveman, Funky Whatshisface, the Shark and Speed Buggy. :)

Just because I don't get to post this often enough.

I guess you could call Gibbs a detective.

I just think of him as the Goddamn Batman, though.

It's not really a detective show, but I had the excuse. Cop shows are close to detective dramas.

Hey, they opened the door with Sipowicz in TFA.

And, here's the guy Sipowicz shouldn't have beat out for the list with his best partner.

/best L&O Classic duo until Lupo and Bernard in the last couple of seasons.

Plus, now he plays a DA. Chris Noth should qualify by default.

Plus, as Sex and the City showed us, he's a superb equestrian.

Oh, and if cop shows = detectives, just choose one of the following...

Yessssss.

I still love how Scott just didn't show up for work one day and Barnaby picked out Ben Jones by basically saying "Ever feel like being a detective?".

/Was just thinking the other day that they needed a case a few years later where they find Scott's body and Barnaby is like "Oh right...him. Kinda forgot about him"
//Though I guess that's impossible now since his "cousin" is the head guy now

The death of Life has gotta be the most painful loss of the one-two punch of the writer's strike and the Leno debacle at NBC. Oh well, at least Damian Lewis has found a show worth of his talents with Homeland.

I don't consider Jessica Fletcher a detective, I consider her more of a prolific serial killer who always successfully framed someone for her crimes. Or else Cabot Cove gives St. Louis a run for its money...
