The first time I remember hearing profanity on tv was in 1991. I was in the common room of my university residence, with a bunch of people milling around and the tv on in the background when someone on Degrassi said f*ck. Even though none of us were actually watching the show, the realization of what had just happened quickly rippled through the room and for a brief second you could have heard a pin drop. Then we all burst out laughing. For a group that swore as much as we did, our shocked reaction was hilarious.

personally i've never understood the concept of swear words or bad words. lots of swear words mean the same thing as a non-swear word. for example, the word "shiat" and the word "poop" mean basically the same thing, but one of them is in appropriate. they mean the same thing! that's like saying the word "couch" is acceptable, but the word "sofa" is a swear word.

television news anchors can say words like "rape", "pornography", "murder", and "sexual assault" every single day and no one even blinks, but if they say the word "ass" then everyone gets all offended.

Swear words are useful in two ways - if someone uses them constantly and without meaning, it tells me they're ignorant, but if they almost never use them, it tells me they're extremely pissed off when they do.

I try to fall into the second group... if I'm dropping an F-bomb, it's probably a warning I'm only seconds away from committing a brutal murder.
