I'm pretty sure the inventor of Tente is in the level where you need one 1x2 and all you've got is a pile of 1x3s even though you've gone through all the bags a million times.

Because that stuff was crap. I had these half dome pieces that were mixed in with my real Lego that I was sure were supposed to fit if I could only figure out what I was doing wrong.

I read The Inferno in college. A good read but you absolutely need footnotes to tell you who the hell you're reading about and why they're being punished so. I figure someone could do a more modern version of the story and put in more contemporary and recognizable figures like Benedict Arnold or Hitler.

The reason that they cost so much is that they are made to a very exacting standard. A small fraction of a millimeter too large or small and they don't "clutch" properly. That kind of precision manufacturing isn't cheap. To be fair though, in recent years quality across the board has been slowly but steadily slipping, in my experience.
