Weaver95: How can you be a 'small government' Republican and then turn around and support invasive government like this...?

Because "small government" is a right-wing talking point, not an actual political principle that they hold.

Your grammar was fine. You said their thoughts were "striking", and I tried to make a joke about their thoughts being union members who wouldn't come in on the day that they made the sign. I was using an alternate definition of the word "striking" for humorous effect- a sort of pun...

Never mind. A joke that has to be explained was not a good joke. :-(

Good question, Weaver. But I bet we will nary hear a peep from our Conservative friends, here....

God knows, i've tried to get an answer out of our more vocal GOP shills on fark. They either change the subject, attack me for daring to ask such a question, or just break down into grunting and wild gestures.

Plenty of small government republicans advocate a small federal government but have no problems with local or state government enacting crazy legislation under the belief you can move to a different area if you don't like laws passed.

Republicans like bigger GOVT as long as their own freedoms/rights are not restricted.

My crackpot theory is it's a pet peeve-driven approach to governing, and all those conflicting pretexts are basically just for show and are of secondary importance to the things they want to pass. Therefore logical consistency's not required.

Q: are you a fundie and are you against premarital sex?

Q: (follow up) did you or your spouse have sex (including gateway activities) before marriage?
A: yes

It's the same everywhere. In the nether parts of Maryland in 2008 I saw a nicely hand-crafted sign against Obama until one day after his election. Then it was re-drawn to say "NO TO OBAMACARE," nevermind that they had no idea what obmacare would be at that point.

It's actually a nice sign. I should take a picture of it next time I'm up that way.

Tennessee, land of dumb shiat governors that are elected by a population that doesn't quite seem to understand they're not getting any help from them. It's more on the values of the candidate rather than what the candidate will bring to them.

There is a small group of us that are reasonably sane, but we're severely out numbered. Often times its like going out in a blizzard with no clothes on. Also, to the people saying that Tennessee isn't in the south really just need to sit down in the corner. Tennessee is in the south. North Carolina is in the south (contrary to some people's wishful thinking).

Those of you who don't know how to read a map, please refer to the region labeled, THE SOUTH. Everyone that looks at map these days from experience, doesn't understand the complexity of such a drawing and resort to having to ask for directions. Often times, the place they're looking for is in front of them.

The STUPID is so overwhelming in this that not only does it make my head hurt, but I think my brain tried to short circuit.

Some politicians, IMO, need to be hastily rounded up and jailed to prevent them from harming the human race and then sterilized to keep them from breeding even more STUPID.

He looks like he came up through the 50's, so he should well know about how well the 'don't teach anything about sex' concept worked and the 'boys could but girls couldn't' ideology was in full swing. (See, in the 50's a guy who had sex before 21 was patted on the back, considered a ladies man and Dad was proud. However, if his daughter had sex, she was a slut, shamed the family and if she got pregnant because no one seemed to know much about birth control, then she was whisked off to a home for unwed mothers, where, after birth, the baby was adopted out. The girl had no say in the matter.)

There was no AIDS, but there was plenty of syphilis and gonorrhea floating about. There were also a whole lot of folks who had the diseases who never got them treated and, years down the road, got to suffer the devastating side effects. (Brain and organ damage. Insanity. Testicals rotting off. Sterilization of the female. Sterilization of the male. Heart disease. Eye disease. Open sores. Nice little things like that.)
In the 70's, psychiatrists went into over drive trying to cure sex related psychosis because of the double standard, even though the 60's had a sexual revolution. Folks couldn't understand why Virginal Mary Jane, after years of nothing more than heavy petting, on her wedding night, did not throw her legs up and act like a professional hooker as she was supposed to. Even Mary Jane didn't understand.

Not to mention that a whole lot of guys had seen snatch only in crude pictures and when faced with the real thing, quite often had a bit of a problem on their wedding night that left them doubting their manhood.

A whole lot of professionals worked like mad through the 70's and 80's to repair the damage done in the 50's and earlier times. Some women considered sex a necessary chore. Quite a few never orgasmed. Aside from condoms, people though a vaginal flush with Coca-cola after sex was birth control. Some shoved an aspirin up there to prevent pregnancy. Others practiced the pull out method -- not knowing that sperm can be in pre-cum.

So Tennessee wants to shove everyone back into the dark ages because they haven't the brains to develop a comprehensive sex education program.

Which means kids will mainly learn from porn online, which isn't the best thing to do. (Like, in porn, they rarely show the guy greasing up his schlong before ramming it up her behind and she goes wild with pleasure. In real life, she'd be screaming in pain as a dry schlong was wedge up there and probably rip his balls off. Nor do they show the actors cleaning their stuff after pulling it out of the bum and poking it in her mouth. Not cleaning before doing that is akin to a 'Dirty Sanchez' and she's liable not only to rip your balls off but shove them up YOUR butt.)

Plus, not EVERY guy has a foot long schlong and not every girl can take more than 6 or 7 inches.

I foresee a new generation of young adults in Tennessee making psychiatrists rich. I also foresee an increase in divorce rates.

Damn! They're some dumb SOBs there.

Pretty much all the positive memories I *have* of high school ended with me getting busted for doing "gateway activity" with one of two girls, E.G. getting busted for smooching in the hallways.

Oddly enough, I didn't knock anyone up, I never caught or transmitted an STD, and so far as I know, I turned out a decent person.

Go figure.

On Thursday, State Rep. Jon Lundberg told NBC station WCYB-TV that a focus on abstinence is needed because Tennessee has the seventh-highest teen birth rate in the nation and the 11th-highest HIV infection rate in the nation.

We've only been trying this tactic for 50 years, and informally for a few hundred before that, but it isn't working at all. Obviously we need to TRY HARDER, everyone! Can't you see that!?

2012-05-12 06:01:51 PM
You start to wonder if this abstinence only business is intentional on the part of conservatives (as opposed to simply stupid). At least some conservatives with a spark of intelligence have to know how awful abstinence education is at preventing pregnancy and disease. Apparently, they simply cannot allow sex without consequences, not only because it gives them a steady supply of sinners to righteously cast out, but because it guarantees a fresh supply of mouth breathing morons to vote for them.
