Texting people who've caused me problems whilst walking in my lifetime: None.

I'd rather see a death penalty instituted for those that text (or use their mobiles) whilst driving.

God I hate texting in general. If I had a Terminator I would give John Connor a pass and send it back in time to kill the mother of whoever invented texting.

If they can get them with texting and jaywalking it's pure profit.

Wow, old people in here. You know what I find most annoying about texting? I can't text a business. I would farking love it if instead of needing to call somewhere, or at the very least have dedicated email people. I was calling places looking for an apartment last month and I kept thinking how much I wanted to just be able to text places.

Oh, and I text in complete sentences, usually don't abbreviate, and with proper grammar.

Walking through the throngs of people in the Times Square area every day after work with their heads buried in their mobile devices; it is frighteningly obvious that people have gotten to the point where not only have they forgotten basic courtesies, they have practically lost all awareness that people outside of themselves even exist.

Between myself and the people I usually text, there's only the occasional abbreviation or missed apostrophe. I find the grammar concerns overblown. Maybe I just have sophisticated friends. Autocorrect has probably helped too.

In New Jersey texting while walking, especially crossing streets, should be encouraged.

Stupid ass response. If people are texting and jaywalking then ticket them for jaywalking. Ticketing them for texting and walking would be like going after people who are texting while in their car and the car is parked with the engine off.

I don't care if some random person is wasting their time texting, but if they're wasting mine, I get testy. The worst is when I go out to meet a group of people and half of them (ladies, I'm looking mostly at you) are buried in their phones. It's not only rude, it's sad.

Some people see idiots texting, unaware of their surroundings. Others see potential mugging victims.

So, jaywalking is still cool as long as I'm not texting? And, I can text as long as the 'walk' light is on and I am not jaywalking?

Good luck out there. I have a friend who watches movies in his car when he's driving and stuck in traffic.

As for people texting while walking: Darwin, thinning the herd, etc.

and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a texters.

and there was no one left to speak out for me.

New Jersey is then most ass-baclwards state when the issue is the risk of a cyclist or pedestrian.
Not the laws, just the aggressive, irritated and very uptight drivers there.
stop signs are optional, even the police run them, WHILE TEXTING!
i know cyclist who were hit, and lost their case because all the jurors drive cars.
they had to enforce issuing citations to drivers not yielding to pedestrians just last farking year.

1). Never go to Times Square. Avoid it like the plague.
2). I don't think texting caused this behavior. Rather I think it's the other way around.
3). Did I mention NEVER GO TO TIMES SQUARE.
4). Oh and if you are visiting NYC that's fine. Just stay the hell out of the WTC Path station area, or for that matter the WTC site area at all during rush hour. You'll be doing yourself and everyone else a big favor.

Last summer, I saw a young lady texting while jaywalking get hit by a cyclist who was also texting. It was a perfect storm of fail.

I'm okay with people choosing to put themselves in positions of vulnerability.

there is a nice short cut through 44th and Broadway that gets one to the PA quicker than going through th esquire, but i forgot where it is.

I've seen people walk into light poles, street signs, doors and other people while texting, and the funny thing is it is never their fault for not watching were they are going, it is the fault of what ever or who ever they walked into. The worst how ever are the people that walk into traffic because they are too busy texting to notice the traffic light. I've seen quite a few people come within inches of getting run over.

2012-05-12 01:49:22 PM
It's obviously these punk kids doing this.
You'd never see a real man doing it.

Boarded a light-rail train behind a girl who was totally absorbed in her texting. Sat across from her. Another girl sat down next to her, also absorbed in texting.

Two stops later, first girl got up to leave. Noticed girl next to her.

"OMG! I was just texting you!"

"OMG! I was just texting YOU!"

LOLed to the next stop.

As a computer tech for a school district, I can say I farking hate kids texting in the halls between classes. I avoid halls between classes simply because of all the kids texting, If I try to avoid one, another will inevitably bump into me. Of course they look at me like I'm the problem.

A New Jersey town took to ticketing pedestrians caught texting while walking after a rise in jaywalking incidents.

Oh ffs. Ticket the fooking jaywalkers. That's what the damned law is for. You don't need to make up new bullsh*t. This is yet another cash grab/freedom grab. Probably unconstitutional too. I walked into a telephone pole once while walking with a friend because we were talking. Should we start ticketing people for having conversations while they walk together too? Yanno... for safety?

but said pamphlets were handed out to warn people about the crackdown.

Yeah, I'm sure you made every single person in the effected area aware of your asinine new ticketing scheme. Must be nice to just pull laws out of your ass to increase revenues and harass innocent civilians. Hmm let's see... oops! Your sideburns are just a little too long. That'll be $100 please or you can choose to get assraped in the local pokey.

Trust us. It's for YOUR safety. If you weren't paying attention to all the new and creative rules we come up with well that's your problem.
