Unless this library is drastically different from others, the library card was likely in both the child's name as well as one of her parents.

Looks like she was...booked!

Book 'er, Dano.

They went by the book.

This closes the book on this sordid chapter.

So on, so forth.

/Ok, fine, I'll shut up now.

I was always scared of this happening when I was a kid. I'd imagine the police would throw me in jail. Not Juvie, but actual jail.

I suppose the officers needed to strip search her for the officer's safety, and prevent the transport of contraband.

Who else would the library send to get the books? Article says they put the effort into trying to get them back, but weren't getting results. It's not like the police charged anyone, they just got the books (and the overdue charge). Seems like a success story.

Am I missing something here?

FTA:

The library receives no federal funding and relies on memberships, donations, and a secondhand shop to survive.

Uh, doesn't the town fund this? I live in a state (CT) where I think every single town has a town-funded public library. Some have several. Our town has three, and the town I grew up in has three also. They are not large towns. Is this not normal?

over a 204-day period

The child had borrowed "Sleeping Beauty," "Corduroy's Halloween," "Dora The Explorer: The Halloween Cat" and "I See The Moon."

Geez. How long could it take you to read those?

And our library system here is much more forgiving. I've gone in many times and (if I'm not using the self-checkout) they'll remind me I have late fees and ask if I want to pay them. "I'd rather not right now" always seems to be acceptable.

Then I saw little Katelyn. I'm thinking, y'know, four-year-old white girl, middle of the ghetto, bunch of monsters, this time of night with quantum physics books? She about to start some shiat, Zed. She's about four years old, those books are WAY too advanced for her. If you ask me, I'd say she's up to something.

I've spent a TON of time working on the task of calling every public library in my state, and discovered my home town wasn't on the list so I called there... turns out it's a private library, funded solely by donations and fundraisers. It does happen.

Do they also send the police after 40 year old adults?

And $0.10 a day? That's hardly enough to make people return books. I think my university did more than that PER HOUR a book was over due. I don't remember what my local library does, but I think it's in the range of $0.50 a day. With a $25 cap per item.

Yes, it is normal to fund benefits for some with money extorted from all. But this library, founded in 1937, gets by on voluntary donations.

This. I had a friend who actually watched as thieves stole the muffler off his VW. Wrote down their license plate and everything. Cops were like "Sorry, nothing we can do since the value is less than $X".

This is serious business. From a USA Today article:

Urban combat is one of the most difficult assignments for ground troops. ... Once the outer wall is breached by supporting armor, assault teams throw grenades ...

The breaching and assault teams are constant risk from residents wielding slippers as well as from the ear-rending piercing screams wielded as booby traps by young children. It takes a rare breed to carry out such a demanding and difficult mission.

FTFY, subby & media.

The point of a library is that you borrow and return so others can read. It is not a free book gift shop.

She's about four years old, those books are WAY too advanced for her. If you ask me, I'd say she's up to something.

I got searched two blocks from my house, back when I was 15 (1990). According to the officer, there were some break-ins in the area, and he thought I looked suspicious "with my backpack" (whatever that means). I was more than happy that day to let him search my bag to put his mind at ease. He was confounded to find I had a copy of 'Quantum reality: beyond the new physics' by Nick Herbert in my backpack. "What is this?" He asked with a tone that declared he 'knew' it was not mine. "It's a book on quantum physics." I said. "You're reading this?" He asked, still with the tone of disbelief. "Yeah, Somehow it just makes sense."
He let me go soon after, and I am pretty sure it shook up his day and made him feel stupid.
I laughed my ass off at that part of MIB.

I used to work at 2 different libraries for a few years back in the day.

THIS SOUNDS LIKE BULLSHNICK TO ME

there is no way any library would ever charge a patron MORE than what the book cost to purchase from the distributor.

$81 for four kids books which probably cost less than $10?

ridiculous. I dont believe it.

I live in a little backwater town in the northern California moutains, there is a library that serves two towns both pop. approx. 400. It is staffed by volunteers and funded only through donations, it works ok, not great but ok. We have internet computers at the library but no real rrference dection. So it does happen.
