the far-right fanatic is being tried for the bomb-and-shooting attacks that left 77 people dead on July 22.
...
Breivik testified in graphic detail on how he set off a car bomb that killed eight people in Oslo's government district and then hunted down teenagers at the governing Labor Party's annual youth camp on Utoya island. More than half of the 69 people killed on Utoya were teenagers.
...
If found guilty and criminally sane, he would face 21 years in prison

Breivik remained calm and "smiled a little" as he watched security guards apprehend the man and take him out of the court room, Akerman told The Associated Press.

Dear Norway,

Could you please make the death penalty legal in your country temporarily?

Me too, but only because the courts aren't reliable enough. Prison for life should be an alternative.

No, they would never do that. The idea of retroactive laws is abhorrent to just about any forward thinking country. Hell, a friend of mine is Norwegian, and he even thinks that killing Quisling was wrong. Granted, he was a tank driver in the army there, and said he wouldn't mind crushing Brevik under the treads.

I will never understand the shoe throwing thing. Even in a cultural context it makes no sense.

Even if by some miracle you hit your intended target, you're out a shoe. You're not getting that shoe back. You've basically ruined a pair of shoes and you're going to be hopping home like an idiot.

How does this punish the person you threw the shoe at?

Taking off your shoe, holding it in your hand and hitting someone with it, that I understand, even endorse. Throwing a shoe...it just doesn't make any sense. You may as well throw your pants at them.

I knew that hitting someone with the sole of your shoe, or sometimes just showing the soles of your shoe was pretty insulting. But I never knew that throwing a shoe was anything more than finding something loose to throw and throwing it.

Throwing is just an improvement on hitting, which is an improvement on sole-showing. It's an evolving technique.

No.

This guy doesn't get to be a martyr to his fevered imagination. He gets to spend the next 60+ years of his life being treated humanely in an Ikea dorm room while every single person in his culture uses his name as a combination of Hitler and Bozo the Clown. He gets to watch while everyone he has ever known treats his insane cause with the disdain which it so richly deserves.

He doesn't get a blaze of glory. He doesn't get the righteous fight he wanted. He gets the "We're not angry, we're just really disappointed" treatment for the rest of his life.

I'm not sure about other cultures, but in Assyrian culture (Middle Eastern), women are trained like ninjas with slippers/shoes. My mom can pick up a slipper, throw it clear across the table and hit one of us with deadly accuracy.

If/when he gets the "forvaring" judgment that is almost a given at this point, it's no longer the State that has to prove that he's dangerous - he'll need to prove that he's changed sufficiently that he's no longer a threat. And he gets to do that exactly once every 5 years. He's leaving jail in a casket.

Exactly! Laws and rights only need to be respected when it's convenient; we should just do whatever we feel like the rest of the time.

I cannot condone a private citizen "taking the law into their own hands" and murdering Mr. Breivik.

Killing Mr. Breivik will prevent him from ever suffering any pain in the future. Appropriate vigilante justice mandates that Mr. Breivik be permanently and severely crippled and disfigured to an extent that he is unable to walk, to speak, or to consume sold food again for the rest of his natural life, which should be extended to as long a duration as is possible. Additionally, at least one eye and his hearing should be retained so that he may be faced to a mirror so that he may see what he has become and so that he may hear his own screams and the screams of those who witness his defilement.

Too many individuals are willing to kill to attain vengeance and, in so doing, prevent the infliction of the greater suffering that may lead to appropriate catharsis.

I don't think he should end up "back" behind bars, even if he's rehabilitated.
The amount of people he killed, the way he did it, the lack of remorse, if he's judged legally sane to stand trial he should never get out of prison in the first place. This is where life sentences are appropriate as a punishment. 21 years, ridiculous.

Cool story time:

I was once crossing the street at a four-way intersection with a traffic light. I had the right of way and the "Walk" symbol. As I stepped off the curb some cabbie slammed on his brakes and ground to a halt about 2' in front of me. He was chatting on his phone and did not even look at me. I kicked his door and walked behind the cab and continued to cross the street. By then he was paying attention to me and was yelling at me out the window. He looked Middle Eastern so on a whim I showed him the bottom of my shoe and told him to lick it. Holy farkin crap! I have never seen anyone exit a car that fast! It was only the intervention of the police (who had witnessed his halting in the middle of the intersection from the other side and did not see me kick his door) that stopped the man from throwing any punches. Not sure if I could have taken him, but glad I did not have to. The best parts were 1) There was no dent on his door so when I denied kicking his cab there was no proof, and 2) the guy actually said that his buddy heard everything and could provide evidence proving that I kicked the cab, the buddy he was talking on the phone with! And since it is illegal to talk on a hand-held phone while driving the cops slapped him with a big, fat ticket.

Norwegian law says that with the exception of terrorism and war crimes, 21 years is the maximum single sentence that can be brought upon a convict. But if he's determined to still be a threat to society after those 21 years are up, 5 more can be added on. And those additional five-year sentences can be added indefinitely. Wikipedia's sources are in German and Norwegian, but I'll take their word for it.

Or just hand down a 21-year sentence for each of the 77 people he killed. Tack on 30 years for terrorism (the car bomb), and have him serve it all concurrently. 1,647 years in prison.
