Oh for fark's sake. Be happy you weren't at home, but otherwise, if you believe in God, maybe you should think he's a bit of a prick. He let your house burn as a way to teach you what's important?

Things made of stone placed in stone grottos tend to survive fires more often than big wooden structures made of tinder.

I'm glad she has some form of hope to cling to after such a tragic occurrence. I disagree with her attributions but that's her business.

She should check to see if her stone Virgin Mary statue drinks milk like all of those Ganesha statues did several years ago.

Even better, she should offer a blood sacrifice

Yes, but only the flammable parts. It's a Miracle.

God works in strange and implausible ways.

It was a conspiracy! Jet fuel burns at high enough temperature to melt stone! And why were no pieces of the original fire found!?!?!

This is apparently the thread where people take the time to post and make sure that everyone knows how above this sort of thing they are. Meanwhile, you're still on a website dedicated mostly to excessive drinking, squirrel testicles and nerd rage.

Flying Spaghetti Monster regrets that this happened but someone got a little crazy with the fireworks at the last beer volcano party in Heaven. He promises if you wear your pirate regalia more often, he'll try to avoid setting your house on fire. Unless he gets the whiskey in him.

Delusions are not good for society as a whole.

Traditionally, religious thinking seems to FREQUENTLY end up being imposed on others. It is certainly what is preventing many gays from marrying.

The main problem with religious thinking is that people treat it as "off limits" to being challenged and this is not a good thing.

As a lapsed Catholic, I found this touching. It's certainly not helping in the "Catholics are Mary worshipers" argument, but to each his/her own. I don't even know what I believe anymore. It's not organized religion that bothers me, it's pedo priests, evangelicals, fundamentalists, and fanatics. I digress. I remember how good it felt to believe in something. Now when I look back I only see myself as having developed a taste for the Kool-Aid. In a way, I'm jealous of her.

No, of course she's not.

Oh, wait..

If you truly turn something over to the Blessed Mother, she will always take care of it. That's why Dick and I are entrusting her with the most important endeavor of our careers: the Catholic Renewal Campaign. We are calling on Catholics across the country -- young and old, active and lapsed -- to renew our troubled culture with the healing truths of our faith. It's time to stand together and bring our most deeply held values back to the forefront, to create a culture where life wins and hope reigns. Where you can take your kids to the movie theater and find features that won't require a stop at the confessional on the way home.

Came her to say this. This has got to be the best example of magical thinking and at the same time the stupidest thing I've ever heard. You know what they tell smoke jumpers who are stuck on a ridge in a forest fire? "Find a stone grotto and get as far down as you can and if you can cover yourself that's even better - the fire might not touch you." How farking stupid is this woman and how many times do we have to call stupid people stupid before they stop inflicting their embarrassing stupidity on us?

If it really was a miracle, a rainbow would have appeared and she would have found an old rotting bank bag full of money under the statue of Mary.

Somehow filing out insurance forms and then waiting to get your check doesn't sound that miraculous to me. I'm pretty sure that's what happens to us atheists who pay our premiums, too.

Catholics dedicate the month of May to Mary, and every year at this time I re-consecrate myself to her, as St. Louis de Montfort taught. It is a Mother's Day gift to myself.

Maybe you should stop giving yourself crappy Mother's Day gifts. Go ahead, try a spa day. You'll find inner peace and have a cute toenail color.

FTA: "Down in the canyon, we'd placed a two-foot statue of the Blessed Mother inside a stone grotto. The year before my brother James, who is a priest, had come to bless it, sprinkling holy water on the grotto and the oak beside it. Everywhere that holy water had landed was untouched. Not even a smudge of smoke. "

These are burned rocks, people are able to tell even after a very long time.

She lived there, maybe she can tell better what is untouched and what isn't.

Oh sh*t. I quit reading after holy water, unscorched, etc.
Maybe the statue is a witch and that's why it didn't burn. Maybe the shrine caused the fire to begin with.

Down in the canyon, we'd placed a two-foot statue of the Blessed Mother inside a stone grotto. The year before my brother James, who is a priest, had come to bless it, sprinkling holy water on the grotto and the oak beside it. Everywhere that holy water had landed was untouched. Not even a smudge of smoke.

I looked at Mary's serene face and upturned palms, and peace filled my lungs. It was as though she was saying, "Here I am, and everything is going to be OK."

I have a bigger question here: Who is stupid enough to run from a house almost certain to be destroyed in a huge fire and not take their social security cards and birth certificates with them?

"Even the formal proof of our identity was gone; we had to apply for new birth certificates and social security cards."

Thats just some weapons grade stupid.
