What is it with this guy? Why the anger?

I don't know what 'God' these people are praying to.

I'm betting the place they think is heaven is really someplace else. And their god is really, something else.

Anyone ever considered that another reason for the RCC being so against homosexuality is because a lot of their priests are folks who chose to become closeted gay priests who were heroes to their respective Catholic families rather than outcasts scorned for being who they were?

Seriously, normalizing gay folks into society at large cuts into their available staff.

Atheist/Recovering Catholic who thinks about this stuff.

Well, Bill Donohue, a mailing list, a fax machine, and nothing more.

No. The Catholic League has 200,000+ paid members at $20 a year, and assets of over $20 million. They also share office space with the archdiocese of New York City. Bill is well connected within the Catholic Church. Don't underestimate him.

DONOHUE: Oh, it's very simple. It's absolutely very simple. I have a doctorate in sociology from NYU, and I know what the literature says. The literature is definitive. There is one gold standard, one gold standard for children. That is: there is no substitute for a marriage between a man and a woman.

But a supple youth will do in a pinch.

Before I opened the article, I knew what this guy was going to look like: no neck, bald, a look on his face like he just ate a lemon, the typical face of white American bigotry writ large. Too stupid to think of himself, too mean to realize other people might just think differently, and so full of hate that his engorged-tick body looks like it's going to explode. He's so repressed that there's no way for him to ever come back from his power trip.

He's a typical sack of shiat that funnels all of his repression--every good moment he had, every real moment he had, every moment he could just be farking and sucking and doing something fun and exciting and interacting with other people and having fun--look at that face, and you see there's none of that. He can bring something up, but it'll be something that plays into his own bigotry, his own bias, his own hatred of humanity in general. And that's what these sex-negative assholes really are. Ignore all the trappings of religion, it's not that. It's that somewhere along the line in this motherfarker's life, something happened, and he never got over it. He never pulled himself up emotionally, dusted himself off, and continued with his life. Instead, he dug in like most idiots do and mistook individuality for being a complete asshole. And that's where he remained for the rest of his life. People like this asshole don't live, they exist. And they always turn to something higher to assert their hatred.

Maybe that's the real problem with America today: it's not religion, it's not even politics, it's just that we have a bunch of bitter assholes who simply cannot function unless they have some sort of power to abuse, simply because they're simply broken human beings who like inflicting pain.

SkinnyHead: "When legislation in favour of the recognition of homosexual unions is proposed for the first time in a legislative assembly, the Catholic law-maker has a moral duty to express his opposition clearly and publicly and to vote against it. To vote in favour of a law so harmful to the common good is gravely immoral." ~ Joseph Card. Ratzinger

To be fair, they also thought it was harmful to the common good when the media started to report on all the cases of buttfarking kids by priests.

So even as a Catholic I don't think they have any room to talk anymore.

Karac: Dr Dreidel: CPennypacker: The protestant on catholic hate is weird in this country. When I was dating my (now) wife who's evangelical, she told me a lot of evangelicals don't think Catholics are "real" Christians.

And to this Jew, Jesus = Christianity.

Eastern/Greek/Russian Orthodox, Mormon, Catholic, Protestant, Coptic...if, at the end of the day, Jesus (aka "Christ") figures in as a major player in your religious observances (or the faith in general, you're a "Christian".

Mormons - they believe that Jesus was a son of God, not the son of God; they also believe that you get to be your own God in Heaven.
Catholics - idolatrous heathens who pray to the Virgin Mary.
Copts - from Egypt and are therefore clearly Muslims trying to infiltrate the true faith.
Jehovah's Witnesses - they deny the divinity of Christ.
Baptists - they allow dancing, which is clearly a plot by the devil to entice our youth into sin.

So you're arguing over exactly how awesome Mr J is and why. BFD, you're still Christians. I get that there are divisions and denominations. As skullkrusher put it: to your larger point, yeah, if you believe that Jesus was Son of God and Savior to humanity, you're a Christian.

No actually, the Pope's view is that only Catholic marriages are real marriages anyways and divorce is not possible. Government marriage licenses are pretty much meaningless in terms of God's law. You might as well ask the Church what their position is on Fark posting rules.

alowishus: I know this will come across as creepy to many people, but I was kind of annoyed by Griffin's reaction to Donohue's question about brother/sister marriage. He said "I don't support that, and I don't think any American's would support that." Why?

Personally, I think incest is disgusting, but my personal feelings are not reason enough for the government to interfere in the bedroom/contracts of consenting adults.

Genetic problems with offspring are a risk, but carriers of genes prone to produce rare genetic disorders aren't prohibited from having sex or getting married. For instance, 1 in 4 children of parents that are both Tay-Sachs carriers will get the disease and almost certainly be dead by the age of 4. These parents are allowed to marry and reproduce. Besides, even infertile siblings are forbidden to marry.

I'm in no way, shape, or form equating homosexuality (which is completely fine and normal) with incest (which is disgusting). I just like logical consistency.

Some people have posited that there is a developmental thing towards the incest taboo. That when you grow up with someone in your nuclear family, the natural incest taboo kicks in and makes thoughts of sex with them disgusting to you.

Apparently there have been reports (unverified, take with a grain of salt) of fraternal twins meeting up as adults after being separated at birth. Without the developmental incest taboo, some experience strong, disturbing, feelings of attraction to each other (they are often alike in many ways).

Not that it has anything to do with the discussion at hand.

I think intra-sibling incest isn't a problem you have to worry about, there are no throngs of them demanding marriage equality. Probably because we all already agree it is disgusting, innately or culturally. Other forms of incest are simply pedophile child rape, and should be dealt with appropriately. If there is the one in a billion couple who are brother and sister and demand to be married...really who gives a fark. Everyone will know they're crazy freaks and we can just get on with our lives.

one man, one woman marriage for life IS NOT the only model for humans throughout time. And one man, one woman plus biological children living in a separate house from the rest of the family is far from standard.

My Grandma was a good Catholic and stayed married to her abusive, alcoholic husband. Even after they separated and didn't talk to each other for years, they were still technically married. Thank you Catholic Church for ensuring Grandma's life didn't really start until her 50's when she completely uprooted herself and got the hell away from him.

Well, actually, they are the single largest religion in the US. Something like 25% of people in the US are Catholic with ~70,000,000 followers. Of course, they're in the minority if you take all the Protestant denominations as a whole, which is about 50% of the US population.

also the single largest Christian denomination worldwide. Roughly 1,000,000,000 of the world's 2,000,000,000 Christians are Catholics
