People need to seriously stop trying to find things to be outraged about.

Christ we Americans are pussies.

If I want to call something retarded I will call it retarded. If I want to talk about slapping a redheaded stepchild I will talk about slapping a redheaded stepchild. If I want to make funny jokes about the south and incest I will make funny jokes about the south and incest.

OMG I AM A BIGOT SOMEONE SUE ME!

/You are all acting retarded.

On the poll at the bottom, 96% of the 30,000 people who answered thought it was funny and not an insult.

1) Disney are the best at milking good and bad publicity.
2) There is an "adoption community."

2012-05-11 12:39:33 PM
As noted in a petition created by Jamie Berke on Change.org, "According to your scriptwriter, the fact (Loki) was adopted is the reason he is a bad guy!

that is not at all what that line meant, you moron.

2012-05-11 12:40:24 PM
I don't think one person on Change.org necessarily constitutes "the adoption community". Everyone else in the article doesn't really seem to care. Also, I wasn't aware there's an "adoption community." Wouldn't that be an orphanage?

/take that, meta-outrage

FTFA: As noted in a petition created by Jamie Berke on Change.org, "According to your scriptwriter, the fact (Loki) was adopted is the reason he is a bad guy!...Being adopted is not something to use for the butt of jokes! Marvel, immediately cease using adoption as the butt of jokes AND issue a public apology to the adoption community!"

Wow, what a misreading. Thor was defending Loki because they are related. When pointed out that Loki is a bad guy, Thor jokes that maybe they're not all that closely related.

I can't see how this could be construed to be a shot at adoption in any way. He could have said 'We're twins... and then ... well, fraternal twins" and it would have the same meaning.

It's amazing the lengths some people will go through to be able to find something to be outraged about.

i was adopted, and i don't give a shiat that the joke's about adoption at all. It was, however, a terrible, overused and trite joke. The joke was bad and the screenwriter should feel bad.

Shouldn't the Demigod community be even more insulted?

Demanding apologies is probably the lamest trend these days. Do they really expect sincerity?

I propose that appologies for everything that was joked on or shown in a negative light be tacked on to movie credits.

Vodka Zombie: People need to seriously stop trying to find things to be outraged about.

If we can't be hurt or offended then we can't sue people. If we can't sue people then we can't get rich. Unless, you know, we work hard and have good ideas or something.

2012-05-11 01:31:41 PM
Eh. IMO the real outrage was how poorly that joke was delivered. (There should have been a beat there.)

And it didn't really make that much sense since Thor had been sticking up for Loki up to that point, going on about how Asgardians take care of their own and all that. It didn't really make sense for him to demur all of a sudden.

2012-05-11 01:31:53 PM
Thin skinned people need to learn to laugh at themselves and stop feeling SORRY for themselves. Being adopted means someone chose you and wanted you. A lot of kids are not adopted, and are not wanted and loved by their natural parents. Get over it.

People are acting they pulled a "Simple Jack" or something.

2012-05-11 01:33:57 PM
The line is supposed to be an attempt to distance himself from a homicidal maniac whom he just said was his brother.

Context is hard.

That post is extremely offensive, and you're a bigot. How dare you insult people of a thinner skin. Be expecting a call from the NAACP, mister.

He couldn't defend the fact that Loki murdered 88 people. Thus the line.

I rather liked it.

Also I am Adopted (Not really but but I want to belong)

I can't recall how it came up, but my friends and I started discussing derogatory terms for white people, and I mentioned "gwailo", which apparently they'd never heard before, and now delight in referring to each other as such.

If you make a term a joke, it ceases to be offensive.

I got that, but I don't see how that changed the equation. (I didn't see the Thor movie, would that have helped?) I mean, it's not like he disavowed Loki as his brother afterwards, right?

Also, seemed like Chris Hemsworth kinda rushed the line.

"Outraged." I didn't get that feeling from the article, despite every other comment in this thread is a gut reaction to the headline alone. "Disappointed" I guess doesn't generate pageviews, though.

I don't even know what the joke is but I am so
outraged at what is no doubt something unacceptable
that I will NOT be seeing this movie. And that's really too bad,
as I heard there was some mention of shwarma in it and
I really like shwarma mentions. I hope Prometheus has shwarma mentions in it.

Loki IS his adopted brother. Thor just pointed out he was adopted after they brought up the point he murdered so many people. Just a quick throwaway joke that got lots of laughs in the theater.

Really? The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People? So, all thin-skinned people are black? As a thin-skinned white person I'm outraged.

Next week, domestic violence groups will protest the Hulk sucker punching Thor just for laughs after that big brawl.
