Given Apple's prediliction for suing everyone for similar things can they really get away with iTV?

If true, that price will certainly be an issue, even for folks like me who don't mind paying the Apple premium so that we don't have to fiddle with things.

It won't be called iTV. Predictions? Wild speculations?

i'm just trying to think of how Apple will somehow manage to 'close' the TV...will they invent some odd input adapter to change HDMI to some sort of iPlug? Will they block all analog signals below 1080i since they make the image look less Apple-y?

I'm guessing they'll just Apple it up a bit by charging WAAY too much for it as always. Same features, same specs (or worse) than a competitor, but it has that logo that doubles the price.

Dude, did you read the article:

That alone is worth the mark-up!

Just buy any tv and get a Roku instead.

In keeping with Apple tradition, the remote will be perfectly round - with 70% of the users shooting the cancer-causing death rays into their own faces as opposed to the TVs.

really? because their computers are still just x86 intel machines that cost 500-1000$ more than similar or same components from a PC manufacturer.

Really?

I have a library of 30,000+ songs, almost 200 movies and over 60 tv show episodes. All I had to do was point it to my library on my NAS and drop all my new shiat in the "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder. Not to mention an iPhone & iPod nano that sync seamlessly.

How much fiddling did you really have to do?

Hopefully the firmware works better than the current Apple TV. With each software update it gets more and more unstable. At least internet radio streaming is working again. This is my first Apple product since the LaserWriter (which was a pretty good printer) and have been impressed with the hardware and the UI but stability makes me think someone from the Windows ME teams snuck in. If iTV (or whatever they end up naming it) suffers the same problems, it's going to tarnish the Apple brand. Flakey computers are one thing but a television set that locks up won't make it in the consumer market.

When you compare Apples to Apples (see a pun!) you will find out that's not the case at all and hasn't been for some time (take a look at the current HP lineup versus the Air for example). The only valid complaint I've seen is that Apple doesn't offer enough variety.

And if you look at phones, tablets, etc - its the same price or even cheaper than the competition (especially when it comes to full feature tablets). Apple is now competing on price because they've have a super efficient supply chain and they are using it to clobber their competitors.

On your Apple machine right? iTunes is notorious for failing outside of the Apple OS. Working with iTunes on a non-Apple machine is terrible.

My primary media machine is a Windows HTPC. I also have a Mac but since it doesn't handle Blu-ray natively I use the Windows machine to rip & manage my media via iTunes (serving to my Apple TVs) and XBMC. No issues with iTunes on it.

Oh yeah..the iPod was a game changer for them, for sure. But even the iPod wasn't/isn't the best portable around. It just so happens that it got immensely popular before other players could really get a foothold. before you knew it, every accessory manufacturer was looking for the next iAccessory or iCase or iCable they could sell, and vehicle manufacturers incorporated ipod controls into their cars.

I do use a few Apple products (iphone, touch, iPad), but unlike most TRUE fanboys that will fight to the death for Apple, i see them for what they are. Good, easy to use products that cost way more than similar products from different companies.

/as a disclaimer I didnt' pay for my iPad

Sure it does. And this is coming from someone who basically only owns Apple devices at this point. The "premium" isn't applicable to the Mac Pros, actually, but for just about everything else, yes, you are paying a premium.

Sure, you get something in return for it, but it's gonna cost you more nonetheless.

Really? The only tvs on the market I could find a few months ago were 1080p. 1920x1080 is ok for television but pretty crappy for a computer monitor. If Apple can release a 4k tv (4096 x 3072) at a decent price it would be great.

That much more? really?

Ok. Let me know when I can pick up my $199 i5 rig. Don't forget to include an OS license, a reasonably good 22" 1080p display, discrete graphics, and 1 year warranty form the system integrator - none of this BS where I have to deal with a separate vendor for each component and they all blame somebody else's product.

I'll contact you within a week to set up my free one on one training sessions with your staff. Note, I said sessions. Plural.

Thanks!

/Don't even get me started on Macbooks vs. The $500 Laptop Segment... Ugh.

I've had terrible experiences with it personally at least 3 times. The general population all pretty much agree as well. iTunes outside of Mac is a pain the ass.

The people this will market too already have fancy tvs and sound systems hooked up to it. How will the iTV break into a market that has already saturated every home with a flat screen TV in every room, wireless internet ready DVD/BlueRay players and gaming consoles? I just don't see people ditching their setups because you get Siri and FaceTime.

I'm highly skeptical due to the fact that this is them trying to enter a saturated market for which they aren't really revolutionizing anything.

This. I miss my Creative players, but I readily admit I was hard on a few of them. I had a Microphoto that died because I dropped it, a Zen V+ that had the OLED screen die on it, and finally a Zen that got the screen smashed on it. I'm actually surprised that my Nano and iJesusPhone still work, given the amount of times I've dropped them on hard surfaces. My Nano actually has chunks missing out of the top and bottom edges. Those cheap silicone condoms for your phone are actually pretty fantastic at preventing the back on your iJesusPhone 4 from shattering when you accidentally fling it onto the asphalt below you in a panic when trying to find your Visa card before the bank closes in 5 minutes because the store you were just at screwed up your pin.

To be honest, I can't really forsee Apple's TV taking off, since less and less people are buying HDTVs as the market has been saturated.

Also, why buy an HDTV that won't support Blu-ray and will expect you to use proprietary cables? Knowing Apple, that's exactly what they'll do.

2012-05-11 01:53:18 PM
iPanel, let's just get that out of the way.

Here's the challenge they will have to overcome: An Apple-branded television will have to do something so incredibly amazing that it can justify a price that is at least equal to the price of a similar television + a $99 AppleTV device. I think offering Siri and Facetime video chat is a start, but hardly enough.

2012-05-11 01:56:06 PM
Why is this news? Oh, it involves "Apple". Great - if any other company were to introduce a TV it would not be news.

What will this TV do that is different from any other TV on the market?

NOTHING!

Suck it Apple - I'm not buying it.

/not buying any more Samsungs either - your picture is good, but everything else sucks

2012-05-11 01:57:49 PM
It's funny that before Apple enters a market there are rumors and naysayers all over. When Apple introduced the iPod most tech people thought it was going to fail. Same with the iPhone and the iPad.

It's actually pretty pathetic how wrong most of the industry press (and geeks) has been.

You'd think that they'd learn and think "geez, Apple has made billions of dollars off these ideas that I said would fail." They don't.

Fortunately for Apple, it doesn't really listen to what people say - it designs what people want.

"If you asked people want they wanted, they'd say they'd want a faster horse."

I dunno what they'll call it, but investors will be cackling, "iMRICH"
At it will change EVERYTHING. Two years later, it will be in 3D and change EVERYTHING...AGAIN.
You will be able to also remote control thru the siri on your iphone as well as the remote they give you, because you can't always shout at your TV..excuse me...iTV.
Also it will sync with all your other apple products seamlessly and shamelessly.

Here's why I'd consider buying my next TV from Apple: the famous Apple quality, feature-richness and their excellent customer support. I don't mind paying a bit extra for this. I may not have a choice but to go with Apple, since Sony may be tanking. But I don't need a TV right now and probably won't for several years. I don't watch much TV and the only reason I replaced my older Sony with the one I have now is because the older one was analog.
