Dear Red Sox(And Phillies) fans,

Welcome to World Series or Bust baseball. There is more to baseball than spending 170 million dollars on players. You have to sign the right people, get the front office people, and hire the right coaches and managers. The more the season goes on, the more the Red Sox look like the Yankees from the 1980's.

You know, people in general don't like cocky people, but, they REALLY don't like cocky people who can't back it up, and Beckett certainly hasn't been able to as of late.

Boston.com is a pretty decent site, and the Big Picture is one of my favorite web features. But that logo looks like it was designed in Word for Windows 3.0.

When I heard Lackey would be out this year I was worried that without him dragging the team down, the Red Sox would have a good season. It's nice to see that Beckett has picked up where Lackey left off.

Beckett has always came off as a Grade A turdbucket regardless of how well he is pitching at any given time, but you know damn well every single player in that clubhouse has had it up their eyeballs with an already invasive and venomous local media that is only encouraged by an equally venomous and willing-to-throw-anyone-under-the-bus-when-they-deem-fit front office.

I don't think even Pedroia is willing to play nice at this point.

"We get 18 off days a year."

What? You get more than 18 days off in the Month of December. This year you can count on getting some extra days off in October as well.

There was nothing in what he said that was bad - when people constantly try to tell you what you should be doing in your free time, I have no problem with going way further than he did and telling them to go f*ck themselves.

Had to fix that for ya. Older fans know this is how it goes. Beckett is reminding me of Clements before he scooted off to the Blue Jays. He needs to ask Derek Lowe how much fun it is to have to wait 3 or 4 hours after the game ends to be able to go home.

I prefer the Mets of the early 90's, All Star players that just didn't gel.

Killer Cars: I don't think even Pedroia is willing to play nice at this point.

He lost any cred when he slammed Valentine after the Youkliss flap. His comment ,"I really don't know what Bobby is trying to do. ... That's not the way we go about our stuff around here. He'll figure that out. The whole team is behind Youk. We have each other's backs here. " No, Sweetchucks, you do what the manager says, right or wrong. If it doesn't work, they'll get rid of him. But they started the season already out for themselves. so there's no way back from that now.

You think they would've learned after farking over Tito last year.

Bullshiat. He sat a game with an injury. To then being seen playing golf is not cool on any team. Besides, dealing with the media is all part of the big money package. And he isn't new to Boston. He has been making big money in Boston since 2006. It's not a good time to forget how vile the media is.

He didn't "forget", he's checked out. He's done trying to portray anything other than he wants to at this point.

And I'm not going argue that he isn't the wrong, or isn't displaying poor professionalism or anything else other than pointing out case file #A-3498 to log as evidence that this front office has really helped screw the pooch.

I thought that was amusing at the time because they expressly hired Valentine to change the way they did stuff around there.

That's why he didn't say anything as negative as he should've. Just left it as "my off day is my off day."

hbk72777: Exactly, it's the equivalent of taking of telling your boss you can't do any heavy lifting at work because your back is out, then your boss seeing you re shingle your roof on Saturday.

Ah well, clearly his back was just fine, as evidenced by his fine performance on the mound. There certainly isn't any difference between the margin for error when you're playing a professional sport and the margin for error when you're playing a round of golf for fun.

Hypersensitive fans and media can all go suck a duck about sh*t like that.

Guys doing shots in the clubhouse while team is winning? Great tradition, shows they're a bunch of likable knuckleheads! Guys drinking beer in the clubhouse while the team is losing? F*ck those losers, they don't care about the sport, the most important thing in the universe!

Like with the proper way to deal with payroll whining as a Yankee fan, Beckett should just embrace it. Show up to interviews in a golf cart with a white sweater tied around your shoulders.

Wise_Guy: How is this on the FO?

His decision to golf when he was "injured" is his own. I'm pretty sure his "f*ck off" response to the media is a result of how a lot of things last year got handled. He needs to sleep in the bed he made for himself, but a lot of comments made from others seem to indicate just about everything they do from now on is tainted by a perception that they'll get no cover from the FO on anything, whether they deserve it or not.

The inmates are running the asylum and ownership lets it happen. They hire a guy to shake things up and then de-ball him immediately by (presumably) making him apologize to his players for being mean to them in the press. I'm not saying Valentine should have called out Youk publicly, but if you're gonna give a dude the keys to the farm them let him run it his way. If I recall, he also apologized for some harsh comments he made as a broadcaster.

The bigger issue isn't performance, it's attitude. We need people who want to fight and get this team turned around. He seems like he is just here to collect a paycheck, and wont help the chemistry in the clubhouse.

This is just like Roger Clemens. Beckett is fat and coasting on a large Red Sox Contract. So Next season, with free agency looming, he'll probably put up some good numbers.

THIS!! I've felt this way for weeks now.

hbk72777: I prefer the Mets of the early 90's, All Star players that just didn't gel.

Not really. Most of the problem right now is that three of their All-Star players are DL'd (with one more who probably should be) and their pitching staff is a bunch of wannabes and has-beens. The pitching staff is 100% 80's Yankees.

\and i must've spent the past few days under a rock, because I totally missed the golfing incident...

2012-05-11 01:30:21 PM
I'm not a big fan of Beckett and he is pitching poorly lately, but I can't get upset about this golf thing. There is a very big difference between playing a round of golf casually and pitching a game at that level. "Tightness" isn't a strain or sprain. It might not hinder every day use, but it will prevent the harsh and violent motion of pitching 90+ mph fastballs. For fark's sake, there are 80 year olds with arthritis who play. And Beckett isn't stupid-- as they said on local radio this morning, if it hurts him to play golf he wouldn't be playing golf. He was still working out and lifting weights during this time, too. Had the medical staff told him to limit his activity? No.

Now some will say "it's not about the golf, it's about public perception." Well fark public perception. People are leaping to conclusions on subjects they know nothing about. So when they ask him about it after a bad pitching outing he should say what he did. Essentially, I pitched poorly. Boo me for it, I expect it. But golf had nothing to do with this and I'm not apologizing for it.

Bwaaaaaaahahahhaha!

Ahhh...the Athlete.
1. Blessed with skills that shouldn't equate to anything (throw a sphere, throw a sphere through a netted hoop, knock people over, hit sphere with a stick)
2. Unbelievably lucky that these activities translate into great quantities of money i.e. profit
3. Take the whole thing for granted
4. Treat the money payers (fans) like crap
5. Score bounties of hot chicks
6. Lose all money.
7. repeat...

Well, he's going to learn a valuable lesson. If you say "Fark Public Perception" you best pitch your ass off, because the media in Boston will say "Challenge Accepted" and make it their mission to make you realize how much public perception matters.

This. At least with Francona you got some sort of logic. The other night Bard goes back out for the 8th inning. He walks the lead-off batter. Valentine had a lefty warming up in the pen for the last inning or so. A lefty is due up. He leaves Bard in to pitch to this guy, and he walks him too. THEN he takes Bard out, puts in the lefty with a righty coming to the plate who ends up hitting a 3 run jack. Ta-dah!
