slayer199: They do have a couple of amusement parks that are worthwhile and the Rock and Roll HoF (which I will never see because it sucks)...otherwise Ohio is a cesspool.

THIS.

I would also guess about 25% of that amount from tourism is income collected from speeding (trap) tickets.

/Oh, I'd also add the USAF Museum at Wright-Patterson, too.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
The Pro Football Hall of Fame
The Wright-Patterson Aerospace Museum
The amazing roller coasters at Cedar Point
The restaurants of 'Iron Chef' Michael Symon in Cleveland
The West Side Market in Cleveland

Look, there are some things worth seeing in Ohio.
And at least it's not that hell-hole known as Orlando, Florida that so many people want to visit.

2012-05-11 10:30:27 AM
Well most people from Indiana, Michigan, West Virginia and Kentucky can't afford Florida and have to go somewhere on vacation.

The Ohio tourism slogan should be: marginally better than all the other flyover states!

I want to but haven't been yet.
Yes, just went again last year.
Yes, but Geneva's been dead since the 70s (before I was born)
Awww, HEEEELLLLLLL no!

In all seriousness, I don't have any real complaint with Ohio - I've lived here all my life and can't really imagine living anywhere else. The only place here I really dislike is Cincinnati, as it is the only city other than Los Angeles that has given me bronchitis. (Seriously. The people there are proud of breathing brown air.)

Definitely worth the stop if you'r passing through. It's free. Best aviation museum I've seen, but then again, I'm partial. I like it much more than the National Air and Space in DC.

We have winter (especially in the northern part of the state) so in some peoples minds it's an arctic tundra.

We have quite a bit of farmland so in some peoples minds we are no different from Iowa.

Fewer people live in the city centers than 60 years ago when the steel mills were a huge part of the industrial might of the entire country so people assume everyone else has moved out even though the population of the state is still growing.

Unless you are "New York" big city living or nothing it's quite nice here, especially the burbs of the major cities but don't let that stop you from remembering that one incident 60 years go from thinking the entire place is an industrial wasteland.

I went to OU. Sadly, the summer I did stay in Athens was when they constructed the roundabout and I lived on the other side. I didn't get to partake in Brew Week. Walking was a pain in the ass during construction.

Odds are pretty good that I'm going to be moving to Cleveland in a couple of years. I have not yet decided if I'm excited or depressed about the possibility. I've enjoyed it the few times I've been there, but, man... it's CLEVELAND.

Other than that, it's drive-through country.

Getting myself geared up for that right now. Just three more weeks...

Of course, I live here, so that doesn't count as tourism.

Eatin' Queer Fetuses for Jesus

Wow. "Acres of parks?" Just booked my plane ticket to Cincinnati, as I don't think I've seen that in any of the other states.

Yeah, but you gotta go to Winton Woods, Sharon Woods or Miami Whitewater to see what I'm talking about. The Hamilton County Park District really does the damn thing and Cincinnati Park District is no slouch either when they can get around racist folks aren't trying to close all the pools in the black neighborhoods or stop black kids from going to the "white" pools.

My family is from small town Ohio. I do like getting back there when I can just for the peace. I mostly only get up there now for weddings and funerals.

There are cops everywhere. Grew up there, lived in Texas, and now Colorado.

Little Rock, lots of police.
Memphis, lots of police.
Ohio.. as soon as you cross that border, BAM.. cop central. And you see them everywhere you go.. State Troopers, Sheriffs, COPS...

..and that's when the paranoia kicked in.

Ohio's a prime convention location, due to cheap renting prices. It gets a lot of convention business, with the biggest probably being the Origins gaming convention. It also has one of the biggest and best Zoo/Aquariums in all of the USA in the Columbus Zoo(with a nice water park right next door), three first rate amusement parks in Cedar Point, King's Island, and Six Flags. We also have Seaworld Ohio, several great museums like the aviation museum at Wright Patterson Air-force Base. Parts of Ohio are Amish country as well, so you get people visiting them for goods.

However, we also have a Honda plant. This means Ohio gets a lot of visitors from Japan, ether visiting the plant on various business or visiting family that has taken root in surrounding area. The end result is that it's really easy to find good Asian food in Ohio.

2012-05-11 10:42:45 AM
I love Ohtucky. In my rear view mirror.

You can have your charming towns, your Cedar Points and your King's Island. If I want an adrenaline rush, I'll drive the DC Beltway at 5pm.

Fizpez: We have quite a bit of farmland so in some peoples minds we are no different from Iowa.

When I moved to New England, people thought that I was some farm boy who drove a pickup truck (I'm from Toledo). Hell, few people thought I was a Southerner. One even asked me if I was one of those "pride not prejudice people".

Seriously you let one river catch on fire just once, and then people expect all your rivers to catch fire all the time.

/It was actually the Cuyohoga River that caught fire back in 1969. To my knowledge the Ohio River has never caught fire.
//Still rivers catching fire in general isn't something that's that's supposed to happen...ever.

fark you, Ohio.

Wasted too much time in both Athens and Columbus. You're bad and you should feel bad. There's a reason I only visit you once every ten years:

BECAUSE I HAVE TO.

And you don't even have Big Bear or Giant Eagle anymore. Only thing you have going for you is DP Dough and they even expanded outside of your nightmarish black hole of awful.

Unless you go to the Eastern shore of MD in July and have them pick some silver queen right from the feilds and then drop it in a pot of boling water on the camp stove next to the blue crabs you just caught which are bubbling away in a pot of Natty Boh, and a little Old Bay, and you melt enough butter for both.

Heaven in food form

Marley'sGirl: I actually really like living in Ohio, but I'm not sure I would say there was anything worth making a trip for. We do have a pretty awesome zoo in Columbus, Cedar Point if you're into amusement parks, and Lake Erie has a lot of fishing and wine. Personally, I like to vacation at the beach which we do not have.

Between Toledo, Columbus, and Cincinnati, Ohio has three very good zoos.
