Nice to see that the Orioles would have defeated Josh Hamilton by 1 run if this was the other day.

If not for Josh Hamilton the Orioles would have taken three out of four in the series.

I find it more odd that there's an NL team that's already done it.

This is kind of reminding me of the Indians last season. The number of last pitch victories they had was absurd.

There must be a new homerun rule if all their shiats were home runs and they won 6-5. Stubby needs to re-learn math.

There are other ways to get on base.

Yes, it would be entirely impossible for a player to reach base some other way then getting a hit.

Even stranger, the Ranger pitcher retired 18 straight with 11 Ks.

BTW it would be hilarious if, out of all the teams that Buck Showalter managed, THIS is the one that makes it to the World Series.

Baltimore is this years Tampa.

The team ESPN can talk about for 30 seconds between New York and Boston coverage.

There are 7 ways to get on base, only 1 of them is "get a hit"

Also, the O's showing that payback can be a biatch :)

Get a hit, 4-ball walk, hit by pitch, steal first (wild pitch on third strike), fielder's choice...?

Error, Catcher interference.

error, catcher's interference.

And it isn't stealing first (can't do that) or "wild pitch", but "dropped third strike" as it can be dropped due to be being wild or a passed ball.

Generation_D: Baltimore is this years Tampa.

The only thing Baltimore had to do to gain that status was:

1. Get a manager his 1000th win
2. Play a 17 inning game and have your DH pitch two shutout innings
3. Give up four home runs to a single player.
4. Get back to back to back taters to start off a game.

Nothing important really. They will sink back into obscurity in about a month.

The good part of all of this is that I finally have people to talk about the O's with. The bad part is that most of them are fair weather fans who will disappear at the first sign of inclement weather (the Texas series was an exception because of what happened in it).

2012-05-11 10:25:50 AM
after back to back home runs the 3rd batter is supposed to be hit by the first pitch. its a friggin tradition. you hit him in the thigh if you a nice guy or go for the ribs if you are a dick.

The Mariners let a batter walk to first base after ball 3 last year. In two separate games.

/Bobby Abreu was one of them

4-ball walk
is there another kind?

home plate umpire screws the pitch count. batter is wrongly awarded first base and later the official scorer declares it a 3 ball walk. i saw it happen at a meaningless crappy college game.
yeah, its not really legit way to get on

4-ball walk implies a walk on a 3-0 count.

What made this so mind-bogglingly bizarre was that after giving up the back to back to back home runs to start the game, Colby Lewis went on to strike out the next five batters in order & retire the next 18 consecutively. That streak was broken up in the 7th inning when Adam Jones led off with (wait for it) a home run, which was followed by a walk to Matt Wieters (the only walk Texas issued in the game), Wilson Betemit's 2-run home run, and Chris Davis being hit by a pitch. Lewis then induced a double play ball, the Orioles got their last baserunner of the evening on an error, and Lewis picked up his 12th strikeout of the game to end the inning...and in so doing, became the first pitcher since play-by-play records began being kept in 1918 to both surrender 5 home runs and strike out 10 or more batters in a 7+ inning game.

/After this series, I'm beginning to think that it's not so much a case of the Orioles being that good as it is a case of the Red Sox and Yankees not being that good this season. Oh, and the Rangers being insanely good.

The Rangers have one of the best pitching staffs in baseball right now and the Orioles managed to score at least three runs every game against them. Also they are getting HRs at a more frequent pace than any other team in baseball. That's something that shouldn't be overlooked.

They also lead the league in solo home runs. ;)

They're playing solid ball, except defensively, which is a very nice change from the last decade+, but I really think that expecting anything more than a 75-81 win season is a bit much right now. Not that I'd be at all disappointed by a 75-81 win season, especially with all the youth on the roster.

It surprises me that no other major league team in over 130 years has started the game with back-to-back-to-back home runs. Wow.

(Not that a ton of homers were hit before 1920, but still!)
