Confirmed by a panel of experts at the annual Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards, McNamara, 44, beat the previous mark held since 2008 by surfing legend Mike Parson by just one foot.

I'm curious how these experts determine this

This should come with a little bit of a caveat. The guy who rode the tidal wave into Sri Lanka probably beats this, but all the witnesses got wiped out.

With photo evidence, this is from AP: Judges for the awards, considered the official arbiters of big-wave surfing, pored over footage and high-resolution still images from several angles to calculate a more accurate estimate, event director Bill Sharp told the AP.

They used McNamara's height in a crouch and the length of his shin bone to help compare it to the wave's top and bottom, Sharp said.

Heh. Don't tell Laird that . . .

The real question is whether this wave was measured by Hawaiian rules. But, honestly, this is just more self-serving bullshiat from the Billabong crowd, which had done more to harm surfing than anyone since Gidget.

I remember the first time I saw big waves. I had just gotten stationed at Schofield in Hawaii. The waves were coming in at what they told me was 15 - 20 feet. I almost didn't get out of my truck, let alone get in the water.

World records for surfing are always measured front-face.
By back face measurement this wave is still about 40', which is the biggest wave ridden that I've ever heard about.
I'm no pro though. I'm just a goofy former longboarder, and have never ridden a front-face wave bigger than 15', which is massive to me.
The big wave stuff these days is insanity.

Despite the depredations of the three-ring money machine, feral surfing seems to be doing just fine for itself. Sure, we've lost some excellent breaks to swarms of idiots, but in a way that's a good thing, as it creates magnets for those idiots to be drawn to, even as perfectly good waves nearby and far away go unridden for lack of a proper "scene" that can be associated with them. Additionally, with surfing's drift upwards through the turbulence of rampant misrepresentation by the Entertainment Industry, it becomes just a little bit easier with each passing year to move through the murk of popular culture, clutching a surfboard. Despite the everpresent displays of laughable, fatuous, proud-fleering ignorance from all points of the compass (consult most of the comments in this thread for reference), surfing, and surfers, can get where they need to go, for the most part, with greater facility today than ever before.

Also, big-wave surfing takes perfect care of itself, and needs no help from anyone. It doesn't matter if those guys arrived by helicopter, boat, or by paddling, the places they ride will never have to worry about throngs of posers, hodads, and wannabes attempting to add some measure of cool their otherwise grey pointless lives by showing up and pretending to be "surfers."

Dora lives, indeed.

holy s! that was incredible. While what Garrett did was truly awesome he didn't seem to drop in from the top of the wave like Laird did in that video. Garrett seemed to set off in the middle of that wave. Still the biggest I ever felt comfortable in was 10-12 so this blows my mind.

Nah. Tsunami are "junk" waves. They don't curl up like a nice breaker, giving you a nice wall to surf. They are more like the aftermath of one. Thus, they don't get that high from a sea level perspective at the wave front. It's more like a case of the ocean continuing to quickly rise above it's normal level.

May I point out to you that you're also posting at Fark ? And that I'm not the one who brought up the apparent schism in the surfer-world (that I didn't even know of) ? I'm just seeing that someone did something admirable, only to be promptly disparaged by someone for whom, apparently, his feat isn't 'pure' enough. Because he belongs to the 'other camp'. *That* is being a dick - I'm just being a dick in response.
