I will admit to texting while stopped a red lights, if someone just texted me.

Not while the car is actively moving. Worst that happens is that I get honked at.

Texting while driving... no.

Posting to a Fark thread while driving... mmm, I'm okay with this.

It's a bad habit. You really shouldn't be distracted while at a stop light. You never know when you are going to have to pull aside for emergency reasons. Or duck in case there is an accident in progress.

Yeah, I know it's a bad habit. But on safety grounds, it's really not particularly unsafe to be distracted while stopped at a red light. If an ambulance needs me to pull over, I'm not deaf, I'll notice. And we're talking looking down for maybe 5 seconds at a time.

I can't stand seeing people using headphones while driving. People use horns and sirens for a reason, you shouldn't intentionally block that shiat out.

Totally agree with you on that, if you can't hear what's going on outside the car then you're not driving safely.

Well, on the upside they're not old ladies who manage to not only be dangerous, but slow too.

I wanted to throw something at the kid who was texting while driving up my road. He almost veered into the lake, but started paying attention as his car started into my neighbor's lawn.

scottydoesntknow: I can't stand seeing people using headphones while driving. People use horns and sirens for a reason, you shouldn't intentionally block that shiat out.

I think that's illegal in some states... however, I've only seen one or two people in my life wearing headphones while driving. Is that something common where you're from?

Incidents of "texting while driving" would likely decrease significantly were my proposal of imposing capital punishment for such an offense implemented.

You should suspend their license as well as forbid them a cell phone for a year. That'll hurt em worse than anything.

You could institute the death penalty to people caught texting while driving and people will still do it.

If you're really drunk and driving, just start texting and you'll never get pulled over.

Hey, kids! You know how you like to type sh*t like "Haw! teh L00zorz!" and "Ha ha teh FAIL!!1"? If you're piloting two tons of steel while typing on something the size of a pack of Camels, guess what?

I use headphones, but I completely agree with you, so I only ever have one earbud in at a time. People who use both are begging to get into a wreck.

On-topic, the headline only notes that 8-in-10 ADMIT to it. I wonder what the real numbers are?

The key is not severity, but consistency. Punishment must be immediate and guaranteed. Every phone must have a GPS tracker, and if any three distinct buttons are pressed in less than a minute when speed exceeds 10 MPH, the phone should brick itself.

Such a feature would prevent use of cellular devices by passengers in any vehicle, including in public transit. I do not object to passengers of public transportation sending text messages.

I see what you're saying, but assdialing on a bumpy road would screw over WAY the hell too many people for it to be practical.

it's been proven that not signaling is actually more dangerous than texting while driving - twice as dangerous.

I text occasionally when I drive (because my wife doesn't understand how to farking call me when I'm driving). Usually takes me a while because I'll move my finger to where I think the letter is, glance down to make sure, then look back at the road. Rinse repeat for a couple minutes until I've got the message typed out. I'm not stupid enough to take my eyes off the road while I type out a sentence.

Let them drive, but suspend their cell phone access for a year--that should do it. Better still: install the cell phone in their car, but don't let them use it if the engine is running. Torture is a delicate art.

This brings up an interesting point. Texting (or SMS, as well call it here) is the rage in Indonesia, where I live, and where every one of the approximately 220m inhabitants possesses an average 1.05 cell phones.

I've studied the issue and talked to people about when and why they text; the conclusion is not that texting is for trivial or silly matters but in many cases may simply be a more polite way of initiating a communication than phoning directly. When you phone directly you risk encountering anger, inconvenience, a noisy environment or someone in a critical situation. I often text first, asking whether it would be convenient to call them up - and if not now, then when.

When it's a client, or a superior, or somebody prone to nastiness, I find it infinitely preferable to text first. Also to be texted - it gives me the option of ignoring the message, which is considerably more diplomatic than hanging up or choosing to ignore the call.

Is it cultural perhaps?

And your attention...your brain power...is where, exactly?
Whatever. You go ahead and convince yourself that you're doing it right.

/you could, of course, stop for 20 seconds and do the important text thing

Well I'm impressed. This will no doubt lead to a Nobel, some day. And hey, a posthumous Nobel is still pretty impressive. Try not to hit anybody useful.
