No voters actually complained. One was a certified poll watcher and was allowed to stay(but made to stop doing anything to intimidate voters), and the other one(with the billy club) had charges filed against him for intimidation.

In response to this single incident, Fox News aired over 100 pieces on the story, it was picked up by pretty much all other media as well, and wingnut websites went nuts, of course.

However, in 2006, a much larger group of "minutemen" in Arizona, one armed with a handgun, patrolled polling places, openly intimidated hispanics and admitted it on camera, and demanded to know if voters could speak english before they would stop harrassing them. Unlike the case with two black men, none of them were prosecuted for a damn thing.

Yep, one black man steps out of line, and is stopped within hours and charged. A dozen white guys do much, much worse, and Fox news and everyone else pretends it never happened.

Relax. Put yourself in his position. He needs to feel that he is a man alone - not the recipient of three hundred years of racism that has set him up with a greased chute through life. He wants (no, needs) to believe that his born-on-third base little white ass worked for and earned the privileges he was born to.

In my case, I have (on one set of parentals) Irish and Cherokee as well as (on the other set of parentals) Irish and either African-American or (more probably) Melungeon heritage--the latter of which is itself a sort of Appalachian metis population with Irish, African-American and Native American ancestry.

"Going back to my country" is probably not going to be entirely survivable in my case because there's at least one (if not two) First Nations, probably some countries in West Africa (particularly in regards to some pre-Civil War ancestors of mine who were named after practically every state in the Southeast at the time), AND probably both Ireland AND the United Kingdom who all have claims to part of my DNA :D

And that's just what we've found out so far with geneaology :D

/that said, seeing as I DO have enough Cherokee ancestry to at least know what clan I should be in had my folks not tried to "pass", do I get to stay? :D

My theory is that the really hardcore conservatives, the one who think "liberal" is an insult and who think "socialism" is "destroying America," look at the world in a very us-versus-them sort of way, and since everyone who is not "us" is "them," "they" are all in it together. It's sort of like the opposite of the old adage "the enemy of my enemy is my friend."

In other words, the reasoning seems to be, "if B is my enemy, and C is my enemy, then B and C must be friends."

This is why you'll often hear some conservatives claim that liberals "love Muslims," or why you'll sometimes hear that Obama is a Muslim AND and atheist. On some level they think that women, gays, liberals, Muslims, atheists, and non-whites are all united by our common "hatred" of conservatives and Jesus and America that we get together and sing Kumbaya just before we plot out America's destruction.

That sad irony is that if only we COULD all find common ground and work together, we'd be so powerful we'd kick their arse into next Tuesday.
