Monoxide: And I love you (assuming you're a teacher) every day when I submit a large portion of my ridiculously hard earned income (money is time baby, so we're talking a portion of my very existence) to support the entirety of your income and benefits. There are those of us who are far too busy generating wealth to spare even a few seconds of the remaining portion of our lives spending and utilizing it - so why not contribute to your safety net and ridiculously difficult and stressful job?

What's a "time baby"?

Are you implying that wages and benefits are part of a "safety net"? These are part of an employee's compensation package.

From my experience, you can get hired with your B.A. Ed., but if you don't show progress towards obtaining a M.A. by your tenure year (usually about the 5th) they'll send you on your way.

And a million union reps just cried out in, well, in unison.

California is jacked of course. But in my experience, once hired, the biggest threat to a teacher's continued employment is a recession. Even playing doctor only eventually leads to unemployment. During a layoff, the most enthusiastic yet least tenured teachers go first. The old Betty's with 30 year old lesson plans are kept. And this is a bullet proof system. Except on Wednesdays. Those are half days. Oh, and 15 lesson planning days per year are exempt. And by year, I mean 9 months.

I have an 8 year old with autism (non-verbal). His CDC classroom is comprised of 8 students, 1 teacher, and 2 assistants. I don't know what the pay rates are, but whatever it is, it's really not enough. To deal with a room full of special-needs kid, some of whom can't even talk, day after day ... I mean, whatever. People have won lawsuits for going through much, much less. If I heard that the teacher made 120k, and assistants got 45k'ish, I would be okay with that. Somehow, I think it's more like 50k and 25k.

The classroom budget is another issue. The school system here totally hangs these teachers out to dry on the classroom budget. It's amazing that they expect a teacher to run that classroom for 9 months on basically enough to cover the posters on the walls. I have NO facts to show what the average budget teachers are given is, but I'm guessing they pay out of pocket for a lot.

I just don't see how so many people have it out for teachers. And how so many people think they make these fortunes. Where the hell do people get this info from? If it really required 6 years of college/training for a 150k job right off, don't you think everyone would be doing it? I mean, c'mon.

If you have kids, you get it. If you don't get it and have kids, you're doing it wrong.

Here's a CSB for the other side of the fence ... My wife and I recently learned that my son's old teacher who vanished off the map for 8 months with no explanation actually got fired because she left a kid behind on a field trip. We kept our kid home that day, thankfully. But she stranded a special needs kid at the zoo for a few hours until they noticed. It's just like ... the hell? How? Was she sober? Eh.

I love the wargarbl of math stuff that they choose to put on blackboards for pics like these. they have a blend of calculus (cos x + C), change of base formula for logs, the answer to part (a) is apparently the set containing zero, zero, and for some reason parenthesis around the two irrational answers.

let along the (half) set at the top involving 2^x+4^x over the interval (0,3] which is somehow related to y=2x-4 at the right side and the missing } to close the set

also the graph which I assume due to the shading has something to due with integrations but is not (easily) related to the cos x + C part

Right, you don't have to have it to get the job. It's called continuing education and, like I said, most "professional" jobs require something similar.

I wonder if a good lawyer could get them off this? Is this much different than paparazzi taking up-skirt pics of women getting in and out of cars? Do you really have an expectation of privacy when you wear a skirt or dress? They use a telephoto lens to get pics of someone sunbathing in their back yard as well. Just because you have a privacy fence up doesn't mean someone can't look over the fence. If a woman is wearing a loose fitting top and you can see her breasts when she beds over who's fault is it if someone snaps a pic? All of these types of pics have been ruled ok by courts because they were fully viewable to the public when they were taken.

I would imagine the whole "luring her over in a manner that caused her to bend over" and then filming up her skirt would negate such a defense...but I'm no lawyer.

Heh. This has always been a private amusement of mine. I've said the same thing about some commercials and movies.

Once during some late night Mr. professor Computer DVD commercial, I pointed out that the "math" on the blackboard in the background was pure gibberish. My gf (who is not a math person) objected that it's just math, how would I know if it's gibberish or not. I explained to her, okay so you aren't good at math, but you do speak english right? So, what if the black board contained randomly chosen english words strung together with some randomly placed punctuation - would that be an english sentence? Or would it be gibberish? I think she got it at that point.

Every female celebrity whose ever gotten out of a car in a skirt has had a pic of her crotch/snatch taken, those photographers don't get arrested for that. All I'm saying is, where is the line drawn?

Most paparazzi are white. These guys are black. .. I'm not really serious, but it's still probably not entirely inaccurate. If the teacher is a 25 year old decent looking white woman, you bet your ass that is where the line was drawn. Whitey gets weird about that sort of thing.

I'm sure there are several who are black, I honestly don't know. It's mostly freelance type work so I'm sure blacks and whites both do it.

I know most who post here are just looking for a laugh, and while I don't condone what these kids did, I'm actually kind of serious about my question.

No, it's not continuing education. That is something different. Most teachers in public schools are required to earn a Master's Degree within a small number of years of hire.
