It's a ten page slideshow, and on each slide all they're doing is including a list of food items with no explanation as to what they are or any commentary. Houston Press, you suck.

Also, doro wat is on a list of weird foods that take courage to try? Really? It's f*cking delicious.

2012-05-10 03:29:46 PM
Only 16, but I like vegemite. Not on the list, but the two-bit fake marmite is.

2012-05-10 03:32:51 PM
Jackfruit and Durian are the same thing, which leads me to suspect that the people who put that list together probably haven't eaten any of that stuff...

Hardcore?

I wasn't counting, but I've had a lot on that list. More than 20, easily.

Seriously. They put veal and whole fried turkey on that list. It's hard to take them seriously.

95. Garbage plate

My arteries still remember that one.

NowhereMon: Jackfruit and Durian are the same thing

Not really. They just look somewhat the same.

2012-05-10 03:36:37 PM
Let's see, I've eaten...

Doro wat
Bone marrow
Squash blossom
Durian
Pig's ear (I think)
Duck tongue

Menudo
Barbacoa
Chicharrones
Oysters on the half shell
Huitlacoche
Beef liver (I think)
Veal
Foie Gras
Latkes
Borscht
Pulque
Yerba Mate

So, that's 31. Suck it, subby.
Haggis
Ceviche
Takoyaki
Chicken Feet
Grits
Marmite
Fiddlehead ferns
Ramps
Bubble tea
Black truffles
Kale

OK I'll take your word for it. What about uni and sea urchin then...

Except for their spiky outsides, they're not at all the same fruit.

Jackfruit

51 that I could recognize eating maybe more that I didn't know what the hell it was called.

I got 31. List sucks.

1. Many people are going to think they had Kobe. Should have used Wagyu (but then they wouldn't know they had it).
2. Can you even get real Beluga caviar?
3. Bubble tea? Are you farking kidding me?
4. Grits? Maybe it's because I get them at Waffle House when I'm shiatfaced at 2am, but even when I've had really good grits it's not something you "have" to eat.
5. Turducken? Really? Because it's going to be overcooked by your sister-in-law.
6. Whole-fried turkey: ditto. Nothing says "I can't cook a turkey" like whole fried turkey.
7. Spam? You can do better.
8. Rocky Mountain Oysters: contrary to the foodie ball craze, balls are pretty meh. Imagine a sponge, soaked in iron and deep fried.
9. If you're going to say "veal" at least go with Jaegerschnitzel or Veal Saltimbocca.
10. Nutria: no farking way nutria is something you have to eat. It's a giant rat that eats mud in a swamp. Author sounds suspiciously like a Cajun.

They are absolutely not the same thing, not even close. They *look* similar but they are not.

And no one should ever eat Balut. Worst food idea ever.

And another thing:

1. Lutefisk: people eat lutefisk out of tradition to remember what they had to eat. Nobody likes it.
2. Ditto for surströmming: Stolen from wiki because I had to look up what it was: In August 2011, German food critic and author Wolfgang Fassbender wrote in a major Swiss newspaper, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, that "the biggest challenge when eating surströmming is to vomit only after the first bite, as opposed to before."[9]

So, my final tally is 31. I don't even consider myself a foodie, just Chinese.

My daughter insists on getting a durian for her high school graduation, and eating it in the stands. I have warned her that they may consider that a WMD...

I get now how it's supposed to be about cultural/edgy foods. I thought it was supposed to be good foods. Putting Doro Wat as the first picture kind of threw me off. Doro Wat is delicious.

Buy it at a Chinese supermarket and eat it at home.

Just do it with open windows.

I've eaten tripe in Pho before. I like it and make sure it's in the Pho. It gets stuck in my teeth, but it is tasty.

As for the list itself, I didn't make it past the first page (because fark you slide show). Can I substitute rattlesnake for python?

2012-05-10 04:37:01 PM
At least a third of that list on a quick read. Meh, I'm no Bourdain or Zimmern, but my stomach is always on its....uh, toes.

I am a rather picky eater and I have had 43 of the things on that list. Some of them I have no idea what they are, but maybe I have had them too?

This list sucks, for a lot of different reasons.

RexTalionis: IrateShadow: And I have still yet to have durian. Every time I try, the restaurant tells me that they have too many customers so I can't have it.

Buy it at a Chinese supermarket and eat it at home.

Just do it with open windows.
